What are your favorite song/dance routines from Hollywood musicals?

Thinking of Shirley Temple, she and Arthur Treacher did a delightful dance, “Wot Cher” for British troops in hospital in “The Little Princess.” Not only was Temple a talented dancer, she brought the number to life in a truly touching screen moment. Anyone who can watch TLP and not be moved has a heart of stone.

White Nights - Ballet vs Tap Scene

Most of the ones I can think of right now are more from Disney than Hollywood:
  1. The Circle of Life from The Lion King- “Naaaaaaaaaaaaants ingonyama bagithi Baba!” (I made a friend sing that while playing Twister. :p)
  2. Be a Man from Mulan - “Let’s get down to business! To defeat… <insert game boss character>”
3.Hellfire from The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Songs like this are the only ones that make Gregorian Chant worth listening. 8P
  1. (The only non-Disney out all of them.) Epiphany from Sweeney Todd - I want you bleeders… ← Me having a mild bout of murderous intent.

It’s not a musical per se’ but the, “You should be dancing” sequence in Saturday Night Fever is pretty good. My husband does a pretty good version of it (only at parties and by request:;)). It’s funny that Gru dances to that song in Despicable me.

West Side Story, I like Officer Krupke (although not too much dancing)
Also liked, “America”.

And in Cinderella, I loved the scene where the mice and birds make Cinderella a dress.
 
I loved Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere’s Tango in “Shall We Dance,” as well as the other dance numbers featured.

Also, the Argentine Tango in “Take the Lead” with Antonio Banderas and Natalli Reznik. Hot, hot, hot!!!
 
One number from Singin’ in the Rain that I haven’t seen mentioned yet, that happens to be one of my favorites from that film: “Good Morning”, with Kelly, O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds.
The whole elaborate “Broadway Melody” sequence is pretty awesome too.

I also like the “Skip To My Lou” dance from Meet Me In St. Louis.
 
Another one I thought of: “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from My Fair Lady.

I also liked the number from Meet Me in St. Louis Skip to My Lou My Darling. I can remember singing that song in grade school! In the 50’s!

Kinda off topic for the thread, but your comment about grade school makes me think of it …

I went to a swing dance tonight in Pittsburgh, and toward the end of the night the band performed “Down By The Riverside”, and I enjoyed a nice dance with my friend Ashley to that song. I told her the song reminded me of attending a day camp in Detroit when I was young, called Camp Riverside. We used a modified version of the song for our theme song. It’s cool to make new memories that connect with old ones. 🙂

I like some musicals, but not all. I love opera.
 
“It’s the Girl” from the 1981 PENNIES FROM HEAVEN. It’s mimed (as are all the songs in the musical), but Steve Martin and two guys you’ve probably never heard of, Steve Rall and Robert Fitch, dance up a storm: youtube.com/watch?v=fXgmZdYfD34

Chris Walken trained as a dancer before he became an actor, and includes some short dance moves in every film he’s done. His “Let’s Misbehave” may be a little ribald for this site, but I’ve always liked the film he did with Sean Connery’s son of “Puss in Boots” as a guilty pleasure (Walken played the cat.) It was hard to see Walken’s dance moves in Puss 'n Boots because the pic was too dark. I remember loving to watch him dance in the fatboy slim video. He really used his dancing skills.
I like the dance scene from West Side Story “Cool” too.

Great dance scene! It’s too bad that their dance in the sequel, “The Legend of Zorro”, didn’t measure up. Alejandro (Banderas) basically was a drunken cad in that scene. Actually the whole of that movie was pretty forgettable.

It’s “Fraser”. Been a while since I’ve seen that clip.

Having been involved in swing dancing for almost a year now (this weekend will be my “swingaversary”), I can tell you that I haven’t seen a single aerial in all that time, much less by a guy dancing with a lady for the very first time. I would think there would be a certain level of trust between the partners before you start doing tricks like that.

Of course, it’s movie–an illusion. Naturally Brendan and the ladies did a choreographed dance and had rehearsed it before filming. The same with any other dance number in the movies. The trick is to make it appear sponstaneous, yes?
