It’s a Wonderful Life
Le Notti di Cabiria
Seduced and Abandoned (very good black comedy)
Marriage Italian Style

Adding Divorce Italian Style (a black comedy as well) as a runner up.

I have lots of films that I enjoy, and make an effort to see when they are on, so this was difficult.

If you like dark comedy, try The Girl Most Likely To … with Stockard Channing. You might also like The Americanization of Emily with Julie Andrews and James Garner.

Could I ask a favor? Do you remember the end scene of the star maker when Joe visits Beata? What does he say to her? I’ve seen the entire film numerous times, but recently saw the end scene on YouTube. And it is different than I remember. Thanks so much.

I also love the Great Beauty. Jep Gambardella as a senior citizen Vitelone (but wealthy)

I can’t come up with a top 5, but I’m thoroughly enjoying reviewing all the lists (I’ve got City of Men at home and Blade Runner is unforgettable: a movie that makes you want to read the book) and reminiscing about some wonderful films.

Assuming this version here is the correct director’s cut…he says to her (after her big monologue, and their exchange of cigarettes):

“I talked to Joe before he died. He asked me to look for you to tell you something…that you’re the only woman that he’s ever really loved. He told me to tell you that when you were together, he didn’t know because he’s slow to catch on. Poor Joe.”
“Joe was beautiful,” she says,
“He was a son of a b***, Joe was. Better if you never met.”
“Who knows how things will end,” she says.
“Listen good,” he says to her, “I’m going to look for work now. But when I make some money, I’ll be back. I promise. I’ll get you the best care. Are you happy? I’ll get you well and take you away. If you like, we’ll stay together forever. I’ll take care of you.”
“Thank you.”

And he leaves. The final scene after that, he’s in the car listening to the “audition” tapes. Man, what a film. I’m gonna re-watch it right now.

Thar’s how I remember it. But I saw a version on youtube (just this scene) he tells her that he’ll come to visit her if she likes. It made him seem much worse, like poor Beata is in this scenario partly because of him, and he’s just promising to visit. :mad:

I love this film, too.

On a side note, Sergio Castellitto who plays Joe plays Padre Pio in another Italian film.

And the nurse, in this scene is Toto’s mother in Cinema Paradiso.

I hadn’t seen It’s A Wonderful Life for a long time and tried watching it last Christmas and found it very depressing. Maybe I need to watch it all the way through again.

We had the same reaction when we watched It’s A Wonderful Life at Christmas!

Last Christmas we watched Going My Way with Bing Crosby as Father O’Malley. We loved it. It was like being in New York back in the 40’s and I love the old Irish priest.

Have you seen it?

Yes! I like Going My Way and The Bells of St. Mary’s and Come to the Stable is another good one.

Glad to know I was not the only one who found it depressing!
 
Everyone loved Steel Magnolias. I have to admit I have not watched it in its entirety.
