I hope I picked the correct forum to post this!

For those of you in the USA (or other countries where it is not required to abstain from meat on a non-Lentn Friday) what do you do on non-Lenten Fridays? 🙂

I used to give up meat. But, as it is no longer binding under pain of sin, I have slacked off. 😊 I’d like to get back in the habit, but not sure meat is the best penance of choice as it is difficult with being the only Catholic in the house. I’m thinking sweets would be a good choice for me. But I am up for suggestions! 👍

I try to abstain from meat. Abstaining from sweets sounds like a good idea.

We abstain from meat (though not this Friday as it’s a solemnity! Whoop whoop!)

For a while I had a habit of doing some chore I particularly disliked on Fridays as a penitential practice.

You can also pray, add time to your usual Bible reading/study, do the Stations of the Cross ( JPII said them every Friday) or go to Mass, if you do not already attend daily Mass.

We also abstain from meat on Fridays.
we simply substitute the meat for rice or pasta,
and on the rare occasion Fish (I’ve never liked fish)🤷

My household abstains from meat on all Fridays. We either have fish, pasta, veggie pizza or a non meat soup. I also (just myself) started to fast on all Fridays (only 1 meal) for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. It’s been wonderful so far.

More power to you. The spiritual benefits are substantial. I would recommend adding Wed if you want to follow the ancient practice.

I abstain from meat. It’s not difficult for me as I don’t eat much meat and maybe I should consider something else, as well.

Stick with the ancient practice. In addition to meat give up olive oil, alcohol and dairy products.

We eat a dish made from mung beans. We eat meat, but we almost always have that dish on Fridays.

It has become a local tradition in the past to have this dish on Fridays since people then strictly observed abstinence from meat. Somehow that practice continued to this day and many restaurants (not fastfood) still offer this mung bean dish on Fridays.

Abstain from meat.
Try to recall the Passion and Death of Jesus during the day and all that terrible event has done for us - confirmed for us by His Resurrection and the remarkable events after.

Pasta with marinara sauce. Easy cheesy.
Scrambled eggs with some chopped green onions is my Friday mainstay.

I also say the Divine Mercy Chaplet on this day, the rest of the days of the week I pray the rosary.

I maintain meatless Fridays unless I’ve performed some other major penitential act. If I’m eating out with others, regardless of another penitential act, I don’t eat meat to refrain from giving scandal.

Our household, including The Husband (who is a Protestant), abstains from meat on all Fridays except those which are solemnities. If we go out on a Friday, I maintain the meat abstinence while he orders whatever he wants. It’s never been a problem, not even when we visit my hostile-to-the-Church fallen-away Catholic mother-in-law. The Husband’s entire family on his dad’s side is either Protestant or atheist; my abstinence has never been a problem with them either.

That said, YMMV. If it’s really an issue in your household, OP, giving up sweets is a good choice, particularly if you have a sweet tooth. 🙂 (I don’t, so abstaining from sugar isn’t much of a sacrifice for me.)

Wow! I used to cook him meatless but he is a very meat and potatoes kind of guy. We are only the two of us so I just eat it too. Yes, major sweet tooth here. :o
