Pagan persecution of christians is insignificant compared with christian persecution of pagans for the next 600 years.
Insignificant? You seem to underestimate the persecution of Christians by pagans, and how brutal those campaigns were against many Christian communities.
Pagans held fast to the old ways for as long as the oppression of the christianized empire would allow, depite the work of defilers and blasphemers like Martin of Tours or Charles the Great.
Much as Christians held fast to their faith inspite of pagan persecution.
Maybe it’s because troops with swords would take your land if you didn’t parrot the line of the roman church.
Actually many pagans were attracted to Christianity because of the tenacity Christians held on to the faith inspite the odds faced.

New Age–Occult–Satanism–EXCELLENT articles!

Here is a URL to a whole series–6 articles:

Especially read the second article in the series ‘An Anthropological View of Satanism’. It shows a direct anthropological correlation between fundamentalistic christian cults and interest in the occult!

and just a note: I KNOW very well that Wiccans/Pagans et al do not claim any relationship with Satanism, but having been on both sides and currently a Catholic I am using the term ‘Satanism’ to cover everything occult. So don’t bother trying to ‘convince’ me that Wiccans and Neo-pagans and modern Witches are not Satanists, I already know!

If you already know, then I am confused as to why you would deliberately choose to use an incorrect and misleading term. Rather like saying “I know very well that most Europeans don’t live in Leichtenstein, but having lived in both Europe and currently in America, I am using the term “Leichtenstein” to cover everything having to do with Europe, so don’t bother to point out that the languages, cultures and governments of Ireland and Italy are not identical with those of Leichtenstein.”

If you have to go to that level of explanation about a term in order to communicate what you mean by it, then you should probably look into using something else that is actually functional for that purpose.

No, not really, for she is just stating the fact that she believes that the occult has its roots in Satanism. I wouldn’t go that far, but I would say that I believe the occult has it its roots in Satan, maybe not the worship of Satan, but he is behind all the deception and lies and rebirth of old nature cults and religions as an attack on the Church and even more so an attack against God, against Jesus and his creation. Please note some the early influences Gardener did come from Aleister Crowley. and it appears many Wiccans do think they are gods and goodesses, a claim Satan makes himself.
Wicca is made up of many diverse elements, yet Sanders identifies some common beliefs among its followers. They are: All living things are of equal value and humans have no special place, and are not made in God’s image; Wiccans believe that they possess divine power within themselves and that they are gods or goddesses; their own personal power is unlimited by any deity; and consciousness can and should be altered through the practice of rite and ritual.

What is important to Wiccans, Sanders explains, is the experience of a spiritual reality, and not truth or a body of knowledge. There is no orthodoxy, defined text, or core beliefs. And, while it has ancient roots, Sanders notes **it is attractive to modernity since it can be freely molded to fit the spiritual consumer’s desires. **
Hummmm “***it is attractive to modernity since it can be freely molded to fit the spiritual consumer’s desires.” ***
so as a Wiccan I could claim anything and its true? and your ideas are false?

yep.

The only experience I have ever had with this was in 1993 when
I was out with a friend of mine and an old friend that she hadn’t
seen in many years spotted her and came over to talk. All I
can say is while she was around I had a very uneasy feeling
and I couldn’t figure out why. Then toward the end of the conversation she mentioned that she had left the Catholic church
and was now a witch. My friend Lisa said she had felt like I did
too.

So it is basically on the same level as a fundamentalist Protestant referring to Catholics as “statue worshippers who think Mary is God”? Or who refer to Catholics as “pagan”? Doesn’t really matter how much connection it has with the reality of Catholic teachings or worship or beliefs as long as she believes it to be true?

OK, I will evaluate it on the same basis.

so as a Wiccan I could claim anything and its true? and your ideas are false?

Bennie, you or anyone else can claim anything you desire. The connection of those claims to reality are another question entirely.

The Sanders article does make some valid points. It is entirely possible that a lot of teens are indeed exploring Wicca and other forms of spirituality because they are not finding an accurate representation of their experience with spirituality in the established religions with which they are familiar. Now whether their understanding of the teachings and range of options within their birth religions is accurate or comprehensive is another question. Frequently it is not. I would say that most folks I have encountered have little understanding of Christian mysticism, Christian environmentalism, the variety and depth of Christian ritual, etc.

I strongly encourage anyone to look long and hard at their own religion and explore the options within it before making a decision to leave. Don’t think that because you can’t find what you seek within the church you know that it isn’t there at all. Often there are strands within it that you simply have not yet encountered that may hold what you are seeking. Leaving the religion of your community and your family is not a decision that should ever be made lightly. That’s why it took me the better part of twenty years, a ton of prayer and a heck of a lot of study and exploration within various forms of Christianity and, later, monotheism to finally reach the decision I did.

I think you already do:( -

In reality most Wiccans do judge the Church on false ideas and if I can repeat what I wrote - I wouldn’t go that far, but I would say that I believe the occult has it its roots in Satan, maybe not the worship of Satan, but he is behind all the deception and lies and rebirth of old nature cults and religions as an attack on the Church and even more so an attack against God, against Jesus and his creation.

Let me re-word this; I don’t think Wiccans worship Satan. But I believe Wiccans, even though they are looking for a true spirtiual experience, are being decieved, by the one that we in the Church call Satan, Lucifer, the Devil and/or by others that may be controlled by the above or other fallen principalities. And the same is the force behind the resurgence of old nature cults, religions and modern fabrications of such and other “new” religions. And he is able to do this because of the failure of many of us that claim the name Christian, that is our failure to live up to that name. 😊 But that is why we are Christians because we need His Grace to become Christ-like and we live in that hope given to us by Christ.🙂

One is unable to see the connections if they don’t believe in a monotheistic creator God nor believe in evil.🤷

Unfortunately, those strands are often considered heretical.
Actually there are very legitimate strands including mysticism, valuing the world and its other inhabitants, etc. They just aren’t necessarily as widespread as more standard communities so they are lesser known.

I think you already do:( -

In what way precisely?

**In reality most Wiccans do judge the Church on false ideas **

Then they are incorrect to do so as Catholics are to judge Wiccans and other Neopagans on false ideas such as Ravyn, who admits she knows better but chooses to do so anyway, is espousing. Equating the theologies of the vast majority of Neopagan religions with Satanism is flatly incorrect. Satanism certainly does exist in a couple of different forms (at least) and they are not interchangable.

**Let me re-word this; I don’t think Wiccans worship Satan. I understand that you believe this and that many Christians believe this. I said that just because you believe it doesn’t necessarily make it true or that therefore it is accurate to call Neopagan religions Satanism and one should not be surprised when one is corrected if they do so. Is it useful to any actual dialogue to allow someone to persist in false ideas?

It would be similar to using “Primitive Baptist” to refer to all Christianity or “Muslim” to refer to all monotheism and then preemptively saying “I know full well that they aren’t really the same, but don’t bother to call me on the intentionally incorrect usage, because I don’t really consider trying to be accurate about something I don’t believe in is worth the bother anyway.”

One is unable to see the connections if they don’t believe in a monotheistic creator God nor believe in evil.

I do not have to share a belief in a monotheistic creator God to attempt to understand and refer correctly to your theology. I am asking that others do the same for other religions. Statements such as Ravyn made do not do so.

This is much like what many Protestants believe concerning Catholic devotions to the Saints and Mary. That Satan is deceiving the devout through apparitions and miracles, and leading them away from truth.

How does one know?

Catholic response is that they KNOW whom they are honoring, yet, they sometimes find it hard to allow that others likewise know whom/what they are honoring.

In a universe that is understood to be full of spirits, some on the side of good, some on the side of evil, where the good ones can never act bad, but the bad ones can act good, and where the Ultimate Good God allows the bad to have such powers of deception…indeed, how can anyone ever know whom they actually honor and serve?

I have asked this before, on these forums, on this thread and to private individuals and no one has a response for me.

My faith does not deal with spirits, supernatural beings and the like, so I guess I am safe from honoring Satan in disguise.

any ideas about how one ever knows who they are dealing with when deceit runs rife?

By its fruit. I had an experience once that I sometimes question. I have to step back and reveiw where it has taken me as well as the people in my life. Tim

And if the fruits of that Wiccan or other Neopagan’s worship of their deities is good, then why the automatic assumption it is of Satan? That also begs the question of exactly what fruits should be measured and who gets to determine if they are “good” or “good enough?”

**From a Christian stand point it would have to be assumed that Wicca, has it’s roots in in soil that is not of God, but roots fertilized in human pride, deception, and anti-Christianity. The Fruit is rejection of the creator and worship of creation. In its modern form, since it was an invention that is the only form it really has, it is a religion that teachs individuals that they can manipulate the situations of themselves and others based on ancient secret kowledge. Its ritulials were concocted from many sources such as free-masonary, The Common book of prayers, folk-medicine, who knows what else and wrapped into mythology and sold to the public as ancient secret knowledge and truth. Otherwise an out right lie and deception. We can either look at Wicca as innocent chidlhood type fantasy as we would Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia, but since it followers claim it to be a true religion, then they have either decided to worship a lie (being decieved), or practice it just to ridicule Christianity as being just a joke, or perhaps both. The real danger doesn’t come so much from the perceived magic Wiccans perform. Though I have seen damage done to individuals’ psych who practiced magic, which in few cases it had been deadly. Rationalize it as you may, but those people are still dead from putting thier trust into Wicca and magic.
Just the fact it is based on lies, so an old man could play out his adolescent fantasy feeling important in controling others, that alone is enough to send up the red flag of danger.

It is not my duty to convince you of these things, but to confront the falsehoods presented so others will not be suduced.
John 8:42 - 44 Jesus therefore said to them: If God were your Father, you would indeed love me. For from God I proceeded and came. For I came not of myself: but he sent me. Why do you not know my speech? Because you cannot hear my word. You are of your father the devil: and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning: and he stood not in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

Karen I do want to give you my thanks for all of your challenges for it is helping me to develop stronger and stronger arguments, even though you may not accept them. thanks again for your participation on this thread and forum. Thats pretty broad and assuming. lol

Sound doctrine maybe? What is “sound” then? Objective vs. subjective realities/ moralities. You can do this forever. He said no one ever answered him so I did, from my perspective of course. lol. Tim

So “fruit,” in your view, consists of beliefs that agree with Christianity rather than actions or traits of character?

Seems like some of your co-religionists would disagree with you:

Q. 1. What are the fruit of the Holy Spirit?
A. According to modern versions of the Holy Bible, the nine 9 fruit of the Holy Spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  1. Where do I find them in the Holy Bible?
A. You will find them in Galatians 5:22-23 where is states,
“By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.”
  1. Does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say anything about the fruit of the Holy Spirit?
A. Yes it does in paragraph # 1832.
"The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: “charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity.”
Please note that while the Cathechism of the Catholic Church lists 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit versus the Holy Bible that only lists 9, you will only find 9 in the modern versions of the Holy Bibles. The Latin Vulgate states 12 fruit as follows:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law.” [Gal. 5:22-23, Latin Vulgate]
No mention of beliefs there at all that I see, only visible manifestations. So, it would seem to me if the person, regardless of religion, is exhibiting charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self control and chastity, then it would be awkward to claim, by your own religion’s standards, that the Deity they are worshipping is Satan.

I am content to let such be a standard by which my own actions should be judged—there is nothing there that is in conflict with my religion.

Why do you think I have been here for 8 months? It’s great apologetics practice for me, as well as being my odd idea of fun 🙂 Not much use making arguments to people who agree with you–they will not be able to see the weak points.

But once you again leave out some very important points, and some of these things also are not in conflict with Wicca, but are with Chrisitianty.🤷

*I say then: Walk in the spirit: and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. *
*For the flesh lusteth against the spirit: and the spirit against the flesh: For these are contrary one to another: so that you do not the things that you would. **But if you are led by the spirit, you are not under the law. *
*Now the works of the flesh are manifest: which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, *Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects (heresys), Envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God. Gal 5:16 - 21

I only highlighted three that can be contributed to all that practice “the Craft”.

From the People’s New Testament Commentary
Gal 5:19-21
Now the works of the flesh . . . are these. The tree is known by its fruits. We show our fruits whether we are of the flesh or Spirit. The works of the flesh are first given. Paul names (1) Three sins of sensuality; (2) two spiritual sins of false religion; (3) sins against our fellow men, of which nine are specified; (4) sins of intemperance, of which two are named. The sins of sensuality were sanctioned by the heathen religion in the worship of Venus, and sanctioned by the purest heathen moralists. Christianity had to breast the current of the whole world. It differs from heathen morality as day from night. Witchcraft. Sorcery or magic, whether a superstition or deception, was prevalent in all the ancient world. Drunkenness. A common sin of all ages. Revellings. Any kind of riotous or unseemly conduct; carousals.
As I have also told you in time past. As before, when in Galatia, so now he tells them again that none who do these things can expect to be saved.

Unlike Wiccans Christians must look at the situation in full context -

Not knowing much about Wicca. Though I have reason to believe that some elements in the nudist community practice it as well as “swinging”. I live right down the road from a nudist resort and have been invited to an open house. At first, what they did there was not any concern to me. But , I’m starting not to like the situation and the element it brings to the area I live. Tim
