There isn’t a board for book reports, so I’ll just have to post this in the Water Cooler.

Stalking the Divine

by Kristin Ohlson

One Christmas this Cleveland writer is so bored she decides to go to church. She hasn’t been to Mass for years. She picks out a large downtown church based on ads in the local newspaper. When she gets there, she discovers the existence of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, a cloistered order so obscure the city has forgotten about them. After Christmas she keeps going to Mass, and eventually gets to know the nuns. The article she writes appears in the local newspaper and suddenly the city rediscovers its nuns. In fact if you go to their website you can still see that article today: This book tells the story of the author’s growing relationship with the small crowd of parishioners and their cloistered nuns.

Right now it’s “Catholic For A Reason II: The Mystery of Scripture and the Mother of God.” Next in line is “The Hidden Manna” by Fr. O’Connor. I’m also re-listening to C.S. Lewis “The Screwtape Letters” on the way to and from work–does that count? 😉

For the Glory of God: How Monotheism lead to reformations, science, witch-hunts, and the end of slavery - by Rodney Stark

Shows a little of the bad along with the overwhelming good Christianity is responsible for. Stark is a sociologist so he is writing as an academic. Some of it is a little dry since he states what he is going to write about and then later writes about it. Skip those parts and it’s a riveting book.

Right now I’m working on two rather opposite books:

Coolidge by Robert Sobel (One of my favorite presidents!)

and Infiltration, by Paul Sperry, about some Islamic threats within government. OK–don’t want to cause any trouble on the Islam forum.

Just finished Shockwave, by Stephen Walker (about the Hiroshima bomb).

Sorry, nothing religious at the moment.
 
Got a book from the library and liked it so much that I bought a copy and transferred my “yellow stickies” to the bought copy:

“Liberalism is a Mental Disorder” by Michael Savage.

I originally heard this guy on radio and thought he was crazy, but eventually saw the book and took a chance on it. Lots of useful footnotes and information, so I bought it. Turns out Savage has Master’s degrees in Medical Botany and Medical Anthropology and a PhD in epidemiology and nutrition science. I was impressed.

Recently I saw Curt Weldon on CSPAN2 BookTV and bought his book: “Countdown to Terror”. Yesterday, I heard him speak in Congress about how the Defense Intelligence Agency is suppressing release of information developed by Able Danger, a task force that used unclassified information to unearth BOTH the attack on the U.S.S. Cole and the attacks planned by Mohammed Atta on September 11, 2001. In both cases, the information was available well early enough to have prevented both sets of attacks. Seven people have come forward to corroborate Weldon’s statements, but the “Pentagon” has come down hard on the people. Fascinating current “history”.
 
I am reading the Maccabees right now. I’m putting the story into music. The music is 100% orchestral in big Hollywood epic format. I love orchestral/classical/Hollywood epic. I’ve finished two tracks so far. I’m just a hobbyist composer, killing time in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

My studio equipment: Reason, Cubase, EastWest Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra, and StormDrum (designed for film score).

Just received “No True Glory” by Bing West. Subtitle is “A Frontline Account of the Battle for Fallujah”. West has been interviewed on CSPAN2 BookTV and the interview was repeated a couple of times.
