*The Hound of the Baskervilles *by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

God bless

I am reading Villette by Charlotte Bronte. Its a slow go for me as I am a little rusty in the literature department. I have to reread and go slow so i know whats going on. 😊 Having kids had made my brain mush! I wanted Jane Eyre but it was checked out already. Just as well, this is my warm up.

Just finished The Sign of the Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and are now reading his The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes

Presently I’m reading two books. The first is Napoleon: Man of Peace, Man of War by Timothy Wilson-Smith and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Both are good books. The Napoleon book is your typical biography of a great man, meaning it has lots of boring facts and old information but there are a few gems of true insight and understanding if you dig for it. I won’t say more about Rand’s book because I’m not very far into it, but its very revealing and remarkably parallels present day events.

I dont know what the last book was that I read but I have read Max Lucados books He Chose The Nails and Six Hours One Friday, now I am reading To Be The Man by the wrestler Ric Flair and when I finish this one it will be The Time Of My Life by Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi and no tellings what I will read after that. Probably a book or two by Joel Osteen or more Max Lucado books or even Born Country by Randy Owens of the band Alabama. Just depends on my mood I guess.

I have that sitting on my shelf as part of my “To Read” list.
(“The Life of Christ” by Bishop Fulton Sheen)

READ IT! It is one of my absolute favorite books! I have re-read it at least five times. And I am not really old enough to remember his TV show. Written in a very down-to-earth way and very meaningful. I first read it when I was a Neophyte (1983) and it really impacted my prayer life.

I have re-read several pages of this discussion and while I am impressed with everyone’s literary choices, I must say this: Doesn’t anyone read for pleasure/fluff anymore? While I LOVE to read, and have read many "heavy"books, political books, Catholic reading, etc…I read TONS of other things, too! Mostly detective, who-done-its and some “scary” fiction. My taste is pretty eclectic. I just finished “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. It is written by the dog who is owned by a budding Formula One race car driver. The dog, Enzo, learns a lot about life from his master.

Anyway - I just think a steady diet of yogurt, whole wheat bread and tofu must be balanced with an occasional cheeseburger and chocolate milkshake!! 👍

Well…I sorta do read the heavy stuff for pleasure.:o I mean, I get more enjoyment out of any number of theology or philosophy books than most novels. I mean, right now, I kinda study Catholic theology for fun. I’m a nerd, what can I say. 🤓

Although I do enjoy fiction by C.S. Lewis and uh…Harry Potter

Harry Potter!?! OK - you have redeemed yourself in my eyes! hahaha:D

I am reading “Step on a Crack” by James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge. It is the first book that features Detective Michael Bennett and his ten kids (mostly adopted). It was first published in 2007. But since it the the first in the series, I wanted to read it. And - even tho I may get a lot of boos and hisses here - I happen to like Patterson’s books.

Hey - I am also reading “Seven Storey Mountain” by Merton. Does that help redeem ME to you? LOL
😉

I’m reading “Driving Straight on Crooked Lines: How an Irishman found his heart and nearly lost his mind” It’s the autobiography of a former Legionary of Christ who worked with the founder, Fr. Marcial Maciel. So far, it’s a page turner and quite balanced. Doesn’t speculate much beyond the author’s personal experience. Quite moving and heart-warming.

That sounds good. (Adding to my ever-growing list of “must reads”…):juggle:

:thumbsup:A most excellent balance of cheeseburgers and yogurt.🙂

I like what I’ve read from James Patterson too, he’s not bad and my aunts read a lot of his stuff. So:thumbsup:for excellent reading choices all around.😃

Speaking of James Patterson, I am reading Witch and Wizard. So far 🤷

“The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades” by Robert Spencer.

I am soooo glad I’m a Catholic. I don’t know how anyone especially a woman could embrace this religion. We all owe to ourselves to read this one.

Not necessarily books but so far I have been reading a lot of Catholic Magazines and articles.

Currently reading “There is a Season: A memoir” by: Patrick Lane

That book sounds interesting. I am going to stop at the library and see if they have it. This thread is giving me great ideas for books to read! 👍

Five women have recommended reading “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest”, and “The Girl Who Played With Fire” by Stieg Larsson, now deceased.

He based his lead character on Pippi Longstocking as an adult.

One woman said it is the type of book you wish wouldn’t end. Sounds like a good read for the beach.

I was lucky enough to find “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades” at my public library. Thanks, all you Catholic Answers posters, for all the suggestions for books to read!

This is at my libray, too, but was checked out. Hmmmm…wonder if it is another CAF member?!?

Anyway - I placed my name on a hold for it when it comes back in. Still reading the Patterson book. It is getting very good. Also was given a Jodi Picoult book that a friend insisted I “have to read”. ehhh…not my style, but I will read it to tell her I did. I am three chapters in and so far 🤷
