Catholicism and fundamentalism. by keating I think

LONG LIVE THE POPE!!!
AD MAJOREM SANCTAE MATRIS ECCLESIAE GLORIAM

How about Faith Of Our Fathers by Cardinal Gibbons written in the 1800’s in response to anti-Catholicism? Tim Staples said it greatly influenced him. 👍

Is he open to the Faith? Then:

Leo Trese’s THE FAITH EXPLAINED

If he is still in argue mode:

Karl’s CATHOLICISM AND FUNDAMENTALISM

If he’ll only read one chapter:

“The God With the Golden Key” from GK Chesterton’s Autobiography.

That’s great. Now you can purchase a new copy. No, better get two: one for yourself and one for the next person you defend the faith to.

Of course, if you purchase a whole case you’ll be entitled to lifetime free pass on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland. :ehh:

I’ll remember that!

In the reading of the stories of a lot of converts from Protestantism, two books get mentioned again and again - Karl’s *Catholicism and Fundamentalism * and Thomas Howard’s Evangelical is Not Enough.

I would also recommend in an audio format a resource that Catholic Answers carries called The Bible Answer Man Debate featuring a dialogue between Catholic Answers apologist Jimmy Akin presenting the Catholic position, and James White and Hank Hanegraaff presenting the Protestant position. This was originally a broadcast on Hanegraaff’s Bible Answer Man show and would probably not encounter much resistance from a Protestant were you to give it to them to listen to. It features Jimmy Akin doing a superb job of giving smart answers and laying out what the Church really teaches and does much to dispel preconceived Protestant notions. The audio is available in both audiocassette and compact disc format.

*Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth *

It is a small booklet; you can get it from Catholic.com. For more indepth reading, I agree with others: This is the Faith.

I have given my Methodist friend both; first Pillar of Fire, and when she had further questions, This is the Faith.

Evangelical Is Not Enough
by Thomas Howard
Ignatius Press

This is such a beautifully written book, great for someone who is a “deep” person.
Let me also strongly suggest Howard’s “On Being Catholic”.

A book I have not seen mentioned here is David Currie’s Born Fundalmentalist Born Again Catholic. It does a great job of presenting each subject in Protestant friendly language . A great book to start with.

I definitely agree about This Is The Faith by Canon Ripley. I’m conducting an Adult Faith Formation class right now using that book. It’s teaching is unequivocal, which is something sorely needed nowadays. Also I would recommend the Baltimore Catechisms 1, 2, and 3. I read them often because the succinct lessons and the question and answer formats are quite helpful in reiterating the fundamentals of our faith. The CCC is good also obviously, but the old Baltimore Catechisms present the eternal truths in a more consise manner.

I would recommend An Intelligent Person’s Guide to Catholicism…but I need to know if it is 100% in line with the Magesterium and Tradition. It was written by Alban McCoy, chaplain at University of Cambridge. It is a tough read due to the fact that it is designed for the more “intelligent” reader. Definitley a tough read for a beginner. Anyone read this?

Anywho, for some books that have also helped me that aren’t too difficult, I will give my top 3.
  1. Bible
  2. Crossing the Tiber–Steve Ray
  3. Unabridged Christianity–Fr. Mario Romero*
*I have found a few instances in Unabridged Christianity that could stand to be revised or maybe slighty articulated better, it leaves one too many questions up in the air. On the whole however it is a great book.

Also, please read “Why I am Catholic” by G.K. Chesterton. It was in one of the This Rock issues from 2004…October I believe.

Glad to be back!

What influenced me to convert to Catholicism 2 years ago?
  1. Catholicism & Fundamentalism
  2. Surprised by Truth
  3. Introduction to Mary (Mark Miravalle)
  4. Pierced by a Sword, Conceived without Sin, House of Gold (Bud Macfarlane)
  5. catholicity.com
  6. the conversion story of Scott Hahn

Peter Kreeft’s Fundamentals of the Faith. It deals mainly with the very core of Christianity, and could be a good gateway to conversion. It takes that which may be familiar to some of our separated brethren and begins to connect it with what they will find along the journey home.

Early Christian Writings. Penguin Publishing. I forget who complied/edited. There is no commentary just the writings of Polycarp, Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch and a few others from the 2nd century. Attach the Didache to it as well.

How Firm a Foundation by Marcus Grodi. This one hasn’t been mentioned yet. If the person were more suited to reading a novel, this is an excellent choice. The wonderful truths of the faith and the difficult questions that must be answered by anyone seriously looking at things are dealt with nicely in this book.
