Sophia House–a GREAT novel about a man’s lifelong struggle to escape the dark night of the soul. It’s by Michael O’Brien, published by Ignatius Press. This book is packed with Catholic spirituality. Definitely a deep read, but refreshing, especially if you’re one of these sombre, meloncholy types like me. 😉

The Terror, by Dan Simmons. Just a historical fiction novel about an 18th century adventure to the North Pole–with a monster. Lol.

Lots of real estate books. Trying to get rich, you see…

I’m just about finished Malachi Martin’s Hostage to the Devil, and have begun Fulton J. Sheen’s The World’s First Love.

🙂

Oh, that is a GREAT book! I had discovered O’Brien’s other novels about a year before Sophia House was released. I raced through all of them. Sophia House had one of the most beautiful endings ever. Now I’m impatiently waiting for his forthcoming works: The Father’s Tale and The Island of the World. studiobrien.com/site/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=73&Itemid=75

My wife bought me a book called “The Bible in History” by David W Kling for Christmas. I’m reading little by little. Currently reading the section on Luther, but it also has sections on Monasticism, the Papacy, Ordination of Women, and some other historical points.

I’m reading a few. “No Price Too High” by Deacon Alex Jones, “The Sign of the Cross” by Bert Ghezzi, and “Heaven in Stone and Glass” by Father Robert Barron.

Alex Jones was a Pentecostal minister who converted to Catholicism and brought much of his congregation with him. I’ve heard Bert Ghezzi on the radio and really like this book so far. Father Barron’s books are wonderful, as are his homilies on Word on Fire (Relevant Radio) or www.wordonfire.org. He’s one of my absolute favorites.

With God in Russia by, Father Walter J Ciszek, S.J.

Subtitled “My twenty-three years as a priest in Soviet prisons and Siberian labor camps”

This book is really something else. I am about one-third of the way through, and it has already been very inspiring, and very humbling. We are so spoiled! Has anybody else here ever read this book?
If you think that one is good, you have to read his He Leadeth Me. I read that one first. It is more about his “spritual journey” that was going on during the same time period.

I just finished “How Firm A Foundation” by Marcus Grodi. I thought it was excellent! It’s a novel about a Protestant Minister, who becomes a Catholic. It was a page turner.

:blessyou:

Thanks for the recommendation - I have He Leadeth Me on my list to read next. I also found from doing a google search on Father Walter Ciszek that the cause for his canonization is underway - woo-hoo! - let’s pray for that and maybe help it along.

Also, please say a little prayer for me because I have a problem actually getting through books. I am sure I will get through With God in Russia and I’m almost done already, but with most books I start them and then my mind just wanders, and they sit on the shelf unfinished - it’s odd. Maybe my mind has been weakened by so many years of TV viewing (which I don’t do anymore, so I’m kind of “reformed”, although I am still fond of Catholic-themed DVDs).

Thanks again and God bless you 👍

Deacon Jones came to the Catholic Men’s Mission in Columbus, Ohio last year. He was a fantastic speaker. I have his book on my “wish list” at Amazon, also there is “Spiritual Workout of a Former Saint” by Danny Abramowicz who was also at the conference last year.

Today I read Lord Have Mercy by Scott Hahn, because I went to confession this morning… Just need to recap a bit. 😃

I am currently read Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (can never go wrong with a good Jane Austen book). Next I will be reading The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham.

I just read The Little World of Don Camillo and Comrade Don Camillo by Giovanni Guareschi. You can d/l them in .pdf from here as well as other stories by Guareschi.

They’re charming little books about a priest in a rural village in post-WW2 Italy. There’s a whole series – I’m going to have to see if they’re still in print 🙂

I recently finished The Mote in God’s Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Hands down THE BEST sci-fi book I’ve read to date.

I mentioned that to my boss and he said I, Robot by Isaac Asimov was. So I just started it last night.
