Sirach, I read Father Joe and could not put it down! Let me just warn you, if you are a sentimental type, you will need some tissues towards the end. It is an EXCELLENT book; one I would recommend to anyone, Catholic or not.

Thank you to the several folks who recommended that book – I managed to pick it up at the library while between Aubrey-Maturin novels* and agree, it is a fine read. Now the wife is reading it before it is due back.

(* Currently on book the eleventh The Reverse of the Medal )

“Hitler, the War and the Pope”, just started and it is very interesting.

It was a scary time, and thank God the Popes were here to steer the Church through the horrors of WW2.

The Popes during those years stuck to their guns, contrary to the ridiculous accusations, they fought anti semitism and facism with a vengence.

It was a devastated German economy, fear of communism, and the German Protestants that allowed Hitler to rise to power.

Can you imingine an economy that goes from a 4 german mark to 1 US dollar, to 4000 to 1 from the end of WW1 to 1922 ? Then to 1 million to 1, one billion to 1, and 1 trillion marks to one dollar in 1923 !!

At one point it cost 140 Billion marks to buy a loaf of bread. The allied treaty of Versailles and its punitive war reparations, along with a bombed out German economy caused this.

It gave Hitler the perfect breeding grounds to market his hatred of the Jews. He even used the Bible to forward his agenda, citing the story of Jesus tossing the money changers out, and twisting a few others to suit his aims.

Hilter used his own twisted interpretation of the Bible to forward his own hatred, that ought to tell you something about using self interpretation as an excuse to justify almost anything including genocide.

  • The Pentagon’s New Map by Thomas P.M. Barnett
  • The Hidden Mystery of the Bible by Jack Addington (1969)
 
  • The Mammoth Hunters by Jane M. Auel
  • The Catechism of the Catholic Church.
  • These forums (like a fiend)
  • My old Russian language course books >_<
 
Actually right now I’m reading “The Everything Bible Book” by Fr. Trigilio & Fr. Brighenti…same two who wrote “Catholicism for Dummies”…reading that too.
 
My Spiritual Director has given me a copy of ‘This Tremendous Lover’ by Dom Eugene Boylan OCSO.
Excellent.
 
I am reading “Journeybread for the Shadowlands” by Pamela E. J. Jackson during Lent.
&
“Body and Gift” by Sam Torode

I just finished “Sex and the Sacred City” by Steven Kellmeyer
&
“Transformed by Grace” by Dom Wulstan Mork, O.S.B.

The first book I recommend, this book should be read by every catholic & anyone in RCIA.

I just got back from vacation and I read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, The Last Templar(murder mystery set in medieval times), and A Tale of Two Cities. I am now reading The Catholic Catechism by Fr. John Hardon and The Count of Monte Cristo. As you may have guessed, I am reading the classics that I did not read in school but rather read the Cliff’s notes.
 
Contemplitive Prayer by Thomas merton, The Good News about Sex and Marriage by Christopher West, and several others!
 
I have just finished: **A History of Mediaeval Jewish Philosophy **(c. 1916) by Isaac Husik, which was very good.

And I have just started: **The Little Flowers of Saint Francis **(c. 2003 Dover Thrift Edition).

Then I am going to go back and do an outline on Husik’s excellent work before jumping into St. Thomas Aquinas’s two works: 1. The Summa Theologica, and the Summa Cum Gentiles.

So I’ll be busy.
 
just finished ‘deep river’ by shusaku endo - very good, asks lots of questions, provides few answers.

about to finish ‘the great gatsby’ by fitzgerald. EXCELLENT writing. ok story.

still reading ‘He is there and He is not silent’ by schaeffer. not liking the style at all, but the concepts are interesting. i disagree with alot, but it does make me think.

re-reading ‘the restaurant at the end of the universe’ for the third time. still freakin high-larious.
 
oh ya. and i’m about to start ‘unburied’ by charles palliser. i LOVED ‘quincunx’ by him, so i hope i like this one, too.

i also just finished ‘the dante club’. i highly recommend it. part whodunnit, part literary exultation. very well done - with lots of interesting 19th century cameos.

Just finished reading “Triumph” by D. Crocker. Also just finished reading “Amazing Grace for the Catholic Heart” by Pinto, Cavins and Armstrong.
 
I finished Scripture Matters by Scott Hahn last week and just started Rise Let Us Be On Our Way by John Paul II. I still have a backlog from Christmas including The Courage to Be Catholic by George Weigel and Swear to God by Scott Hahn.
 
Today I’m reading “The Seven Perennial Sins And Their Offspring” by Ken Bazyn.
 
I just finished “Gettysburg - A Novel of the Civil War” by Newt Gingrich and “Europe and the Faith” by Hilaire Belloc. Now, I’m in the middle of another Belloc book, “The Crisis of Civilization”.
