What books do you recommend for Liturgy of the Hours?

I am looking for a book with the readings for the Liturgy of the Hours. I am not looking for instructions about how to pray the LOTH, since I know what it is. I would like to get a book that actually has the readings. Does anybody have any suggestions on which one would be best?

I thought the books that have the reading is the 3 volume set, which is meant for priests/religious?

Correct me, if I’m wrong, but that’s what I was told.

It’s a devotion that is practised by all priests and religious, but laypersons often practice the devotion too. I believe there are different versions of LOTH, just like there are different Bible translations.

I know what it is.🙂
But I never heard of laity using it. For me I use the 1 volume set. It has almost everything (morning, noon, evening, night prayer and office of the readings), except the readings 😃

Usually I get the reading from the Internet. 🙂

What is the title, and who is the author of the book you use?

There are many Breviary’s for the liturgy of the Hours… Most Catholic Book stores should carry them…

I use the 4-volume Liturgy of the Hours published by Catholic Book Publishers in New York.
 
Shorter Christian Prayer is a good book to begin with. It contains Morning and Evening Prayer from the Four-Week Psalter.

For a more comprehensive book, try Christian Prayer, a one-volume edition of the Liturgy of the Hours. This version contains the complete texts of Morning and Evening Prayer for the entire year. It also has a good selection of hymns.

Anyone can use the four volume set, titled Liturgy of the Hours. It is expensive and rather challenging to learn.

I started off with Shorter Christian Prayer, then moved to the larger one volume Christian Prayer. I thought I had things figured out until I purchased the four volume set. I’m still learning how to use it.

It is advisable that in addition to the book, you purchase the St. Joseph’s Guide. There are two guides published; one for the one-volume prayer books and a different one for the four-volume set.
 
the one volume Christian Prayer is the best bet because it has a cycle of selected 2nd readings for Vigils in the back, with complete reference to the scritpure 1st readings, but you would need your bible with you. I have the ones from daughters of St Paul, and their annual guide,

there is a new Benedictine Breviary, which we are considering, but rather expensive, somebody here will post a link before long, I am on my way to work.

for the complete readings the 4 vol set is the only thing I know if you can’t resort to the internet. Mine was a gift I could never afford the whole thing. I would not recommend springing for it unless and until you have a well established habit of praying LOTH and need it for your vocation. There are many devotionals with daily readings from scriptures and Fathers that can substitue well for Vigils readings.
 
I use the 3rd (1962) edition of “A Short Breviary for Religious and the Laity”, edited by William G. Heidt, OSB, which was published out of St John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN. There were two versions of this, a regular and a complete. The complete (which is the one I use) has the daily scripture readings. I got mine on eBay.

I also like the online LOH at: breviary.net/.
 
I use the Christian Prayer, The Liturgy of the Hours, which is the combined breviary. I was able to use this in our Carmelite Group, even though many had the 4 volume set.

The 4 volume set cost about $145. The combined breviary cost about $30.

Someday I will get the four volume set, but being my wife and myself are both Carmelites and pray the LOH together, I have to buy two sets and so, I’m looking at $300.

To my knowledge:

For private devotion you may use any translation you wish.

If you anticipate participating in public devotions, only the ICEL translation is approved in the US. This would rule out using the 3-volume set approved for England and many territories.

The 4-volume sets or 1-volume Christian Prayer are available from Catholic Book Publishing or the Daughter of St Paul, and contain identical translations. Shorter Christian Prayer is even more abbreviated, and only from CBP, as far as I know.

Or, the Latin *Liturgia Horarum *is acceptable everywhere. 4-volume available from the Vatican. There is also Lauds and Vespers available from Scepter (Latin *editio typica *facing an independent English translation).

Simple answer: since you are in the US, and you want to use the Office of Readings, then you have no choice but to get the complete, 4-volume set of the LOTH.

That’s all. Not Christian Prayer, not Shorter Christian Prayer, or the likes. Christian Prayer contains only an abbreviated version.

You’d be surprised as to how many lay people use the complete sets (4- or 3-volume depending on where one is). I do, for one.

Correction: It has selections of the Office of Readings (also: selections of Daytime Prayer). It is by pruning these offices to “selections” that they can compress the multi-volume set down to a single volume.

If it’s too much to shell out for the complete 4-volume set all at once, it’s possible to get a volume at a time as needed. That’s how I acquired my set.

Remember that it’s really an investment for a lifetime.
