There are many good programs where you can volunteer or support. Almost every diocese in the USA has a diocesan Respect Life or Pro-Life Office. You can contact them. They are in need of volunteers at all levels. They do train, for free. You must be 18 and in communion with the Catholic Church to be part of them.
If you’re in the Northeast you may want to contact the Sisters of Life in the Archdiocese of NY. You can find them on the internet. They have a wealth of information and are in need of new sisters and more volunteers.
Priests for Life has a new lay branch that is worth looking into. I believe their address is
www.priestsforlife.org.
There is a group on the west coast called
Rockfordprolife.org. I have never had any contact with them, but am very impressed by their activities and their web page. Check them out.
In the Archdiocese of Miami there is a strong diocesan office for Respect Life. Their webpage is under reconstruction, but you can email or PM me and I’ll send you as much information as I can. I helped them set up their Board of Advisors.
The Archdiocese of Denver has an excellent Pro-Life Office under the leadership of Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap. He’s a fellow Franciscan whom I have know for many many years. I trust his leadership in this area. If you’re in Middle America, that’s the office to turn to for more information.
In New England there is the Archdiocese of Boston’s Respect Life. Again, it’s headed by another fellow Franciscan, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, OFM Cap. I’ve known him for a long time and know of his commitment to this ministry and his gentle and prudent leadership. For anyone in that part of the country, that’s another contact point.
You don’t have to be in any of these dioceses to get information and direction. They are the big religional dioceses in certain parts of the country. They can put you in touch with the local ministries in your diocese.
If you are male, there is a new community of Franciscan Brothers for Life that is just getting off the ground in the Southeast. Let me know and I’ll give you more info.
You can also check out Project Rachel online. They are excellent in the post abortion healing process. They have many outreach programs.
There are also programs for younger volunteers in some dioceses. If all else fails, approach your local pastor. Many parishes have a Respect Life Coordinator.
These are just some things that come to mind on short notice. I hope it helps someone. Always remember to carry the biggest gun there is and don’t be afraid to use it, the Holy Rosary.
Fraternally,
Br. JR, OSF
