Vatican City, Feb 9, 2015 / 05:27 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Cardinal Raymond Burke said he was “responding to a hypothetical situation” when he stated that he would resist any possible move by Pope Francis away from Catholic doctrine.
“I simply affirmed that it is always my sacred duty to defend the truth of the Church’s teaching and discipline regarding marriage,” Cardinal Burke told CNA Feb. 9.
“No authority can absolve me from that responsibility, and, therefore, if any authority, even the highest authority, were to deny that truth or act contrary to it, I would be obliged to resist, in fidelity to my responsibility before God.”

It is so apropos in the current climate that goodness be persecuted and misunderstood - even hated.

Knowing he’s been the center of controversy in the press, Burke again takes the stage to speak to the press, and masks his intention under a ‘hypothetical.’ Our Lord’s words, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks,” strongly suggests his real motive, to gain as much press as possible to thwart any possibility of divorced and remarried spouses being ‘surprised by God’ in a ruling by Pope Francis. He plants the seed publicly so that others will take the hint and follow in his footsteps, resisting if necessary.

A meek and humble person, *knowing *that he is a favorite target for comments by the media, would refrain from further comment and notoriety, preferring to await the outcome of the synod. There was no need to give audience and voice yet again, his extreme disapproval, with hints of ‘resistance’ if his ideal is thwarted in any way. Once again, another public display of apparent dismay toward Pope Francis.

What you said above could apply equally the Pope. Both are members of the Magestrium. Both can and should proclaim the truth.

More especially, prayers for our dear Pope Francis. I offer my daily masses for him, and have done this for several months now. He walks a difficult road with many enemies. :gopray2:

That’s not a very charitable assessment of the Cardinal. He did not make up the hypothetical so it is unfair to say he was “masking his intention”. The reporter asked a hypothetical question and he provided a hypothetical response. The Cardinal has no need to “mask” his intention. He has made his intentions perfectly clear. He voices Church teaching. Full stop. And he leaves the nuanced interpretations to others.

I realize that some people thought that the Cardinal’s new post meant that he wouldn’t make public statements any more. That “hope” was never grounded in fact. 😃

As we should pay for President Obama and all our elected leaders. And thank you for reminding me to pray for the Holy Father. I am somewhat embarrassed that I pray for politicians every morning but have omitted the Pope:eek:

I pray for dear Papa Francis everyday. He is the Hope for this world that continues to ignore the Gospels. His humility and grace are driving more and more lapsed Catholic back to mass.

Ah yes, to the uninformed, it may look that way, but I keep discovering more and more covert actions on his part that causes me much alarm, wondering “what next?” No need to take out a megaphone. Those who have eyes to see, will see. There are weapons that are greater than the media. 😉

NOTICE

Negative and rude comments toward CAF members, clergy (deacons, priests and bishops) or toward religious and religious orders are banned.

Everyone, online and offline, deserves to be spoken to and about respectfully. However, some posters seem to feel that clergy and religious are fair game.

If you have an issue with them, take it up in private, not on this forum or any of our forums.

You may cite something from another source, if you are not using it to further an agenda. Agenda posting is not allowed.

If we deem that you are disrespectful to our clergy and religious, you will receive an infraction or even a ban.

Proof what you write before you post.

You may not make disparaging remarks about:
  • Vatican II
  • Clergy (deacons, priests and bishops) of any group
  • Religious (brothers, sisters, and nuns) of any order or congregation
  • Lawful actions and disciiplines by the Church including the historical excommunication of the SSPX. It happened. Rome explained why it happened. End of story. Rome did not put it out there for debate by the faithful.
  • Another poster or his/her ideas. You can disagree. You cannot attack, insult, ridicule or dismiss as unimportant. His opinion is as important to him as your opinion is to you.
  • Parishes, pastors, civil leaders.
  • Other religions – if you’re unsure how to speak in public about other faiths, look at the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. They are fraternal, polite, and intellectual in discussing religious differences.
Avoid arguments that will lead to violations of charity. You don’t have to like what you read and others do not have to like what you post. But you must be civil toward each other and those who are not on the forum.

As Fr. Gorndon said in a recent post, “Sometimes we can think that we know more than we do and that leads us to make assumptions which could be incorrect. While having questions and seeking answers, we still need to trust that the Holy Spirit is who is guiding the Church. Put your mind at ease and trust in God to guide His Church.”

Well, what is it that you would like to see happen?

I have decided to withhold judgement about all of this until the Synod takes place - then I will decide what is up. It is a little bit like global warming isn’t - I just can’t get to the bottom of it for the life of me. 😉 I am encouraged by the announced list of attendees at the 2015 Synod; a good group I think we can all agree. Let’s just see how it plays out. I will do what needs to be done once I can figure out what that is.

You should start by bringing some consistency to your objections. Here you object to Cardinal Burke’s “covert actions” while a little earlier you accused him of “plant[ing] the seed publicly”. Apparently it is his position that causes you “much alarm” regardless of how he expresses it. Given that the German bishops - who take the opposite position - are out giving interviews on this topic it is disingenuous to excoriate Burke for doing the same thing.
