What causes a house to be haunted?

I lived in a house with evil in it when I was young … too young to understand the actual evil … but that is how it was described to me … I had nightmares every night in that house … we moved and the nightmares stopped … the next family that moved into that house had horrible things happen to them … my family had also had horrible things happen to them in that house … so I know there are houses with evil in them … first thing I did when I bought my own home was have every room blessed … thank goodness I have lived in this house for 36 years and never felt evil like I did when I was a child.

I think the devils are better off trying to tempt me rather than make me scared of them lol
For sure. I also feel it is more successful for the devil to not haunt a person but to send an atheist instead to plant the seeds of doubt in a faithful person’s mind. The Godless delusion is one of his biggest tricks.

This is the second time today I’ve heard/seen that idiom, and I’m not sure if I’ve heard it more than two or three other times in my entire life. Weird . . . sort of spooky . . . . 😮

Just speaking from personal experience, fear was a good motivator for me after the death of my father. I did not see a ghost, but had disturbing dreams about him looking very sickly like he was before he died and then suddenly getting his strength back and forcefully grabbing me. It seemed like a scary call to action.

I prayed for the repose of his soul each night for over a year straight. I hope my prayers helped dad if you were in purgatory.

Exactly, like you see in movies and as well in Church history that evil spirits can manipulate matter and could go as far as to kill you. but once you know that the devil loses if he does that or makes you fear him, you tend to not be scared if him in the horror movie type sense anymore. now he only scares me in how much of the world will give into him:(

Yes, in a way. As the warning signs escalated, such as objects being moved, creepy whistling, electronic devices doing strange things, an audio recorder with voices calling my wifes name, etc, then finally all hell broke loose. The more it got my wifes attention leading up to the attack the more interested she became. There was plenty of warning signs.

We were happily living a life of sin with zero faith at the time, that’s what initially opened the door. We were not evil people but our lifestyle was very far from a Christian life.

Now factor in God’s plan, because there was a reason God allowed it to happen. My parents had always been very very faithful Catholics. They raised me the right way, never missing Mass, Catholic school, everything right. But I chose to live a different life once I got into high school. There was absolutely nothing anyone could have said that would have led me back to Christ. Then boom! The attack! Mr. and Mrs. good time became instant saints let me tell you. Nothing else would have gotten either of us to consider turning our life to Christ. We needed the hell scared out of us, and that’s what happened!

The reason. Exactly to the day one week later I got a call no son wants to hear from his norther. My dad was diagnosed with cancer. God knew my parents would need two faithful and loving Christians to be there for them over the next year and a half or so. We all became so close and my father and I had finally had the best relationship we had ever had. When he finally passed away, as we prayed by his bedside in their home, it wasn’t doom and gloom, there was only faith, hope, and love. It was remarkable knowing my father was seeing Jesus face to face. You see, God knew exactly what He was doing at exactly the very right time. He made us both Believers and delivered us from evil. True story that’s a lot more in depth than I can write on here. Anyone is always welcome to email me if they want more details.

God bless.

I’m still scared, but yet confident too. I don’t think the trauma of a terrifying attack ever goes away. The feeling of that evil presence is very frightening, and its because I know it could have killed my wife (or me). The violence of it, it’s unlike anything we normally know. I feel very confident in Christ, yet I still have a tremendous amount of anxiety, the attack will always be fresh in my mind. It must be like the stress soldiers feel after a war, it stays with you.

God bless.

I think all these anecdotal stories of “haunted house” experiences do more harm than good.
On this, we agree. While I am not one of these people who wants to sweep all the supernatural out of the Church, if people would spend half as much time focusing on the supernatural Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist as they do on worrying about haunts, curses, demons, and exorcism, we’d all be better off.

However, it’s almost Halloween, and the topics of ghosts, witches, curses, hauntings, horror films etc are going to be on people’s minds, so we need to be patient and deal with it.

Most probably are, but not all. I was a skeptic at one time as well, kind of believed in it, but not worried about it. That kind of thinking was a major mistake. All the accounts of demons in the Bible, they are very true. I have no doubt skepitcsl people even back then thought the same, that it was just a coincidence or mental problems. The problem is that the secular world has glamorized and water downed what they consider “hauntings”

The two are not mutually exclusive. Those who seem focused on the diabolic are at least equally focused on Christ.

Some are and some aren’t. Some people treat the Catholic faith more like superstition or magic rather than a way to do God’s will and be close to God.

Other people do focus to some extent on God, but do not seem to trust in his protection.

I’m sure your assumptions are correct in some cases. I wouldn’t call them accurate generalizations.

I have complete trust in God. I also know that he allows suffering and allows Satan to attack his followers. There is a long list of saints who have experienced extraordinary attacks from demons.

Threads involving the demonic, spells, curses, Harry Potter, etc, seem to devolve into two camps. One camp discounts or minimizes the devil’s abilities. The other acknowledges and respects it. I suspect one of the factors distinguishing the groups is personal experiences.

In pointing fingers at my purported “generalization”, you injected your own generalization by suggesting that being realistic and calm is “discounting or minimizing the devil’s abilities”. This is hardly the case. Articles I have read on exorcism all say that the vast majority of cases of alleged possession or demonic attack that the exorcists look into turn out to have some natural cause, often a mental illness. Only a tiny number involve actual demonic possession or attack.

The fact that the devil has the power to drive people into such states of heightened anxiety testifies to his power. However, the point people miss is that God has the greater power, and it is further not necessary to keep doing certain rituals over and over or constantly watching out for alleged demonic signs in order to stay safe. We had a thread yesterday discussing how someone from another forum thought blessed salt needed to be sprinkled on all food to remove possible curses and that the reason we say grace is to remove curses from food. This is an example of somebody going way too far, and it’s not an isolated example.

There is a reasonable medium/ moderate position where one recognizes that the devil exists in the world but also does not let his heart be troubled by it. If there is a problem, call the priest and he will deal with it. I do agree that some people do have a genuine problem with demonic oppression or infestation, but it’s a relatively small group and a lot of them don’t talk about it all the time. Also, while as you say many saints have had to deal with demons who were attacking them because of their great holiness, the vast majority of people are not at the level of holiness of a saint and are more likely to be “attacked” by the devil simply tempting them to commit ordinary sins, rather than by paranormal attacks.

I realize I’m likely talking to the wall here because people who want to obsess over demons for whatever reason are going to do it and feel justified in doing it and criticize anyone who tells them they might want to turn it down a notch. They aren’t going to stop just because I or anyone else cast a jaundiced eye.

That doesn’t mean it has a “supernatural” explanation.
Well that also means that you are not bounded to believe it really happened and I am completely fine with that.

That is what priest said and it was very well investigated. I can only accept that and say that everything was fine after prayer and Mass said. Also, not want to be misunderstood, those things were happening because of things that were done in house and not because of anyone’s holiness or giving too much strenght to Devil by fear. We had no fear until that started happening.

I agree with Tis in this
