What did Jesus do on the second day?

“Hell” is a poor translation. He “descended” to the dead, which was to those who were awaiting the Messiah - and “opened the gates of heaven” to those who were righteous.

1 Peter 3:18-20 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit; in which he went and preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey,
He preached (Himself - who He was - and His gospel to those who had died previously.
 
Here is the section in the Catechism that speaks of His “descent into hell” and what He did while there.CCC 631-638. Very good.

More in 1 Peter 4:6. Saint Peter is the only Apostle who received this knowledge via revelation, it seems.
