“Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”-what did he mean?
Thanks for the article. Here’s Scott Hahn’s Hunt for the Fourth Cup article.
I agree. What I am cautioning is that we cannot prove from the text which Cup Jesus was holding when He said “this is My Blood.”Jesus was a Jew…he was brought up as a Jew, worshipped as a Jew, celebrated their feasts as a Jew etc. They were in the room to celebrate the Passover…which is celebrated with the four cups of wine according to the Jewish custom. In my opinion, the Bible does not have to name each cup that was drunk during this feast as the people hearing it at that time would know that they would be celebrating with the 4 cups of wine.
I’ve commented on The Fourth Cup before. I find it very interesting and thought-provoking. I am not entirely convinced but I do think it is a very worthwhile study. It is, obviously, not “the teaching of the Church” - we are free to accept it, consider it or reject it.When we see jesus in the upper room we are actually coming in to the part of the passover meal where the “Cup of the Redemption” is being drank. The four cups signify the jewish exodus from egypt. These jewish passover requirements came over thousands of years from the time of the actual exodus to the time of jesus. To this day jews are required to drink 4 cups of wine at passover in their Seder meal. I would go to the Scott Hahn link or Watch this video www.the4thcup.com. It is pretty long but it is the best explanation of this topic. It goes a long way into answering the OP’s question. god bless
P.S. It is obvious that he was drinking from the third cup when he said “This is my Blood”, he was establishing a new covenant. The final cup he drank on the cross was the “Cup of Consummation” after this he said it was finished. Watch the video and comment !!
Sounds sound to me!I think He meant he would not drink wine with with them again until after His resurrection. …
I apologize for showing my ignorance, but what are the four cups? The moment he drank the final drink of wine he gave up his spirit to be in the kingdom. This is consistent with the 4 cups. This is not something that we are making up, I read it is taught to catholic priests in the seminary. Maybe a catholic priest is among this group and can comment on this topic. Another example that is in the video is that jesus says “Father, father why have you forsaken me?” I always wondered why he said this and have heard many explanations. It turns out that he was actually saying the beginning passage in Psalm 22, which is a prophecy of the messiah. There is an unbelievable depth to the scriptures, and we all seek to understand it. Read Psalm 22 and contemplate what I have said. God Bless !
1. The meaning of the word Nazarene suggests that Christ should be called a "Nazarite."
2. Jesus filfilled the Nazarite law if you consider the law a prophetic shadow.
3. Samson as a shadow of Christ prophecies that he should be a Nazarite.
Jesus took the vow at the last supper when he said he would not drink again until...
Long hair was just a shadow of bearing our shame. Jesus bore our shame on the cross
Jesus, during the time of his separation (in the grave) was not in contact with a dead body since it was an unused grave. Now you know why this was important.
All the days Jesus was separated from the Father were Holy. Though he was made sin for us, he had no culpability.
The shaving of hair is losing ones covering for authority. As the Father forsook Christ on the cross, Jesus head was "shaved". And he was in the grave on the seventh day.
And on the eighth day he shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons, to the priest, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:
11 And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, and make an atonement for him, for that he sinned by the dead, and shall hallow his head that same day.
12 And he shall consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was defiled.
13 And this is the law of the Nazarite, when the days of his separation are fulfilled: he shall be brought unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:
14 And he shall offer his offering unto the LORD, one he lamb of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish for a sin offering, and one ram without blemish for peace offerings,
15 And a basket of unleavened bread, cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, and wafers of unleavened bread anointed with oil, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings.
16 And the priest shall bring them before the LORD, and shall offer his sin offering, and his burnt offering:
17 And he shall offer the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD, with the basket of unleavened bread: the priest shall offer also his meat offering, and his drink offering.
18 And the Nazarite shall shave the head of his separation at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall take the hair of the head of his separation, and put it in the fire which is under the sacrifice of the peace offerings.
19 And the priest shall take the sodden shoulder of the ram, and one unleavened cake out of the basket, and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them upon the hands of the Nazarite, after the hair of his separation is shaven:
20 And the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the LORD: this is holy for the priest, with the wave breast and heave shoulder: ...
Certainly all of the sacrifices were shadows of Christ.
...and after that the Nazarite may drink wine.
After his resurrection, Jesus could drink again with the disciples. Christ had pronounced "It is finished" on the cross which declared the successful completion of all his works, including the fulfilling of the Nazarite vow.
Peetey:Go to www.the4thcup.com and watch the video. It is kinda long but it is totally catholic and has enormous insight. I’d like to engage in a conversation with anyone who watches it. I found it totally moving and insightful.
I think this is incorrect. The Jews drank wine with every meal, for it was the only way to insure safe drinking, unless they were near a well. There weren’t many fresh water wells in Jerusalem.I believe He meant that He will not ‘enjoy the world’ or be with them until the Resurrection. They drank wine when they celebrated; a wedding for example (a more precise example is the wedding of Cana). Since it was for celebrating, there was nothing more to celebrate, or at least nothing more Jesus could celebrate at that moment. He would not enter that state of rejoice or celebration until the celebration of the resurrection.
This is my opinion.
