Oh boy… now that’s a question that requires a dissertation as a response!

The Old Testament is filled with allusions to the Messiah and prophecies of what he will do. As a non-comprehensive list to get us started:
  • restore the Davidic kingdom
  • initiate the “day of the Lord”, in which all will be restored to its proper order
  • return Israel to self-rule
  • establish Jerusalem as God’s seat for the whole world
  • be a suffering servant for the sake of the people
…and that’s just a start!

First and foremost, from domination by a foreign power. Since 597 BC, when Nebuchadnezzar incorporated Judah into his Babylonian Empire, their country had always been a part of somebody else’s empire — Babylonians, Parthians, Greeks, Romans — with the sole exception of the hundred-year Hasmonean kingdom, which lasted from 166 to 63 BC. As it turned out, that was to be the last time that Judea was governed as a fully independent Jewish state until the proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948.

Oppression, the invaders, Romans, Greeks, Babylonians. You name it, all the invaders throughout the history of Israel.

That is a question with diverse sets of answers. If you read the prophets you can see that the Jews wanted to re-establish the Davidic kingdom and be delivered from their earthly enemies. However, the prophets, also speak of God saving them from their sin and blotting out their transgressions. Isaiah especially also speaks of the re-making of the world to be at peace under God’s rule. When you look at the gospels and see passages such as Matthew and John’s descriptions of people going to John the Baptist for forgiveness of sins, when we see accounts such as the lepers seeking healing, when we see accounts of the disciples asking Christ when the kingdom would be re-established, it seems the Jews were seeking all these things simultaneously. And when we look at Christ we see he brings forgiveness of sins at the cross, and that when he returns we will see the re-establishment of God’s earthly rule through Christ and the abolishment of sin and death and a re-making of a new heaven and earth.
