Since 597 BC, when Nebuchadnezzar incorporated Judah into his Babylonian Empire, their country had always been a part of somebody else’s empire — Babylonians, Parthians, Greeks, Romans — with the sole exception of the hundred-year Hasmonean kingdom, which lasted from 166 to 63 BC.
