When I was confirmed as a 17 year old many years ago, the girls were asked to wear a dress or a nice shirt/skirt combination and the boys to wear at least a dress shirt and pants with tie/jacket optional with dress shoes. Same dress code applied for our sponsors. I wore a blue and white dress that went just below my knees. I didn’t choose red as a few people did as its a color that doesn’t look all that good on me. My sponsor (my aunt & Godmother for baptism) did wear a red women’s business suit with a white blouse with dress shoes.
When my sister’s children received the sacraments of initiation a few years ago, I wore a modest black dress as one of the sponsors/godparents. My niece wore a white dress, my nephew a dress shirt and pants - both kids wore dress shoes & they changed into those nice clothes for Confirmation & First Communion after being baptized wearing a tan robe with a tee, shorts and bathing suit under it.
A good rule of thumb: dressy yet modest, and wear a comfortable pair of dressy shoes as you will be standing for some time.
