What do Anglicans call their ministers?

In a story I’m writing, I have a small town in Great Britain that has an Anglican Church. It’s not a huge feature of the story, but I still like to get everything accurate.

I called the Church “St. George’s”, because I thought you Anglican churches are named after the saints like us and St. George is Patron of England, if I remember correctly.

The main character runs into the minister of the church. What would he say, “Hello Vicar ____” “Hello Father ____” ? How would he address him?

What is the service called? How would the minister say "I haven’t seen you at _____ (Services, liturgy, Mass?)

The main character is going to find out some things about his (deceased) parents from what we would call Parish records. Anglicans call these Parish records too, yes?

Would it be ok to have the minister in a cassock, or is that completely out from left field?

Thank you all! Like I said, it’s not a huge deal, but it will play out an important streak in the story, and I like having all my background stuff correct anyway. Thanks again!

Well Rawb,

It would depend on which type of Anglicanism we’re talking about? Liberal Anglicans who think anything under the sun is ok? Anglicans aligned with Africans or South Americans? Anglicans that mimick Catholicism or Anglicans that mimic Calvinism? Anglicans that dress in cassocks or Anglicans that don’t? You could also make the plot interesting by adding a scene where the bishop has had enough of all this liberal meddling in the diocese and he decides to align with an African bishop but half of the diocese decides to stay with the liberal branch and there’s mass confusion! Then you could continue with the liberal Anglicans being foolish enough to elect a wacky former biologist hippie to become the presiding bishop! This witch would rule the church with an iron feminist grip and even threaten the conservatives with being deposed if they don’t follow her
1960’s hippie commune style values! Then, when the conservatives break off, she tries to sue them and take away their property! The conservatives break off and then the bishop battles it out with the supposedly conservative elements in his own diocese about lady priestesses! They want 'em! He doesn’t! The battle is on! Then a bunch of these folks get fed up with not having any catechism, no theology, no moral compass, and a complete lack of authority so they become Roman Catholic.

Wait a minute… You can’t write this story! IT’S REAL LIFE! That would be plagiarism! Oops!

awww, cmon… piling on the Episcopalians just isn’t fair… 😦

It’s too easy of a target. And we all know the struggles that faithful Anglicans/Piskies are going through with the tyrannical heretic Presiding Bishopess and the delicate milquetoast Archbishop of Canterbury. Not to mention a global structure that doesn’t really allow for anything to actually get DONE.

Really, we shouldn’t pile on now that we’re out. We ought to just pray for those who are there and be good ecumenical neighbors.

(also, you know this is just begging for a flame war! 😉 )

Not from me it isn’t.

GKC

The CofE has different titles for clergy based on their assignments (Vicar, etc). You could probably wiki or check the CofE website to see the differences. Perhaps one of our **resident Brits **can shed more light?
My former CofE Vicar was addressed by his first name by the majority of the congregation and by me, though some referred to him as Reverend.

I’m not sure if there is any hard & fast rule regarding this so assume that it will be down to the individual Vicar’s preference.

There are many answers to these questions - following suggestions are deliberately generic.
I called the Church “St. George’s”, because I thought you Anglican churches are named after the saints like us and St. George is Patron of England, if I remember correctly.
Can’t go wrong with “St George’s”.
The main character runs into the minister of the church. What would he say, “Hello Vicar ____” “Hello Father ____” ? How would he address him?
Plenty of options - but you can’t go wrong with “vicar”.
What is the service called? How would the minister say "I haven’t seen you at _____ (Services, liturgy, Mass?)
“I havn’t seen you in church recently” - thats nice and vague.
IIRC main service would likely have been choral/chanted mattins (until perhaps as late as the 60’s).
The main character is going to find out some things about his (deceased) parents from what we would call Parish records. Anglicans call these Parish records too, yes?
Say “parish archives” rather than “parish records”.
Would it be ok to have the minister in a cassock, or is that completely out from left field?
Cassock is fine - especially a double breasted one, dog-collar will depend on period.

You know what, though, Chris? When I went back to anglicanism for a VERY short time (going through a long funk with Catholicism, having trouble with some teachings of the Church that I’ve since reconciled, etc.) I noticed that the reason these folks are in this mess is because they’re in a religion with NO theology! They even brag about it! It’s a blank check denomination. You show up, go through some Catholicky liturgy but as far as
divorce
abortion
contraception
marriage
cohabitation
hell
purgatory
mary
scriptures
homosexuality

on and on, their position is a 1960’s “no hangups, man” philosophy. You fill in the blanks! No problem!

and when you call them on stuff like the 39 Articles that they sport in their Book of Common Prayer, they’ll agree with what they like in there and then turn around and go against teachings of the 39 articles and say, “yeah, well, the articles aren’t binding on Anglicans! They’re just a road map” etc.

the reason their church is in chaos, has fallen apart, and is becoming globally pretty irrelevent is because they don’t stand for anything? heck, even the mormons stand for something (although it scares me!). Anglicans have no defined boundaries of right, wrong, good, evil, no theology, no catechism, nothing? And the little authority they set up, they violate?

So what a “conservative” diocese (and I must point out that in Anglicanism, “conservative” is not what Catholics think of as conservative! More like moderate with a slice of lemon) does break off from the more insane liberal pack, it doesn’t do any good really. Because they just created more division, they’re still without the papacy and without a direct link to the apostles and infallible authority, there’s still too much of a democracy to their churches, and they’ll just combine some ‘better’ teachings with some ‘still bad’ teachings. For example, many of these break-off groups are still pro-lady priest? They’re still ok with divorce and cohabitation, they just hate gay marriage? Woop tee do!

There’s no consistent theology of path for Anglicanism to me except a Titanic style ice berg. I wish they’d all just become Catholics and let the other liberal koo koos that are still in the Episcopal Church just join the feel-good United Church of Christ bunch or unitarians or something…

The conservatives might as well just go Catholic!

Oh wow - your irony was almost lost on me. It was so subtle - like a piano falling on our heads.

Rawb asks a simple question and now we have to read the normal drivel of insecurities and pettiness towards the Anglican Church. I am not surprised to read this post, I have come to expect it.

Happy Advent!

If TEC is so bad, why did you go back? Must be something there you needed…

If we are a bunch of unrepentant sinners, why do you waste the skin on your fingers typing about it? Your post comes across as narrow-minded and prejudiced, which won’t convince any of us to change - why waste your time? If you need someone to tell you EXACTLY what to think and feel and EXACTLY how your own personal relationships with God and your spouse should be conducted, I guess you are in the right place. Who needs to really think about these things when Big Brother (Sisters aren’t holy/smart enough to count, it sounds like) can give you orders like a parent with a child. I am happy for you - just don’t try to rain on my parade.

For my part, I tend to side with Shakespeare that you “…doth protest too much.” Don’t worry - we will welcome you back with open arms when you are ready.😃

Happy Advent!

To get me to call a “priestess,” “mother” would require my taking an entire bottle of Vicodin, total delirium, and a major head injury all in one.
I’d say that’s pretty uncharitable. To get me to address a Catholic priest as Father would require me to believe that he is actually in succession to the Apostles (which I don’t). Offended yet? You should be. You seem to have no issue with offending others.

You can’t really be as confused as you sound here, or maybe you can be. You are still in a church who can lay claim to clergy who have sexually abused minor children to the tune of 107 convictions and more to come in the wake of the largest sex scandal in the history of Christianity. If it isn’t mind boggling confusion that someone would continue paying homage to a church who ignored this horrific activity for centuries then I sure as hell don’t know what is and would be scared to death if I ever saw it.

Well a couple of things, Jane. You ask why I bother to waste the skin on my fingers. I guess I’d ask you the same thing? Why do you waste the skin on yours coming into a Catholic chat room and never agreeing with anyone in here? What’s the point? You’re not going to convince the orthodox Roman Catholics in here either. Touche. I’m not trying to “rain on your parade.” Raining on an Episcopal Church parade is tantamount to rainin ng on a gay pride parade. This is a Catholic chatroom. Don’t expect we Catholics to butter up a church that condones homosexuality, female clergy, has no real moral compass, and teaches a watered-down feel-good Catholic-lite lifestyle? By the way, I DO NEED SOMEONE TO TELL ME EXACTLY HOW TO BELIEVE! His name is Jesus! He left a visible Church that you turned your back on, Jane. At least your dad stuck around 🙂 You got a church now that gives you what you want–the Catholic frills with none of that pesky morality that might put you in an awkward position of having to stand for something. You won’t have to ever fight the evils of the world because the TEC doesn’t believe evil exists short of nuclear holocausts. You want have some pope telling you what’s right and wrong. One can be his or her own pope!

By the way, Jane, I NEVER WENT BACK TO THE TEC. You chose to “go there” with my personal journey, the least you could have done is get it right. I went to a conservative Anglican diocese. I’ve told you that many times. It broke off from the pathetic TEC. Thank God for that! I pray for them for sure. The TEC is the laughing stock of the Anglican communion and if you are following the news, a new conservative North American province is being created and it will thrive while the Episcopal Church will whither on the vine. TEC is an aging denomination with little new members, mostly older parishoners, and many folks are getting darn tired of Lady Katharine Schiori and her imperial reign.

Why put your son and daughter in Catholic schools if we’re a bunch of mindless drones that can’t think for ourselves? You seem to have enough confidence in the Catholic school system that we mindless zombies can educate your kids? You’ve even gone up and taken communion not respecting our faith’s values.

So don’t sit here and judge me. “Narrow-minded and prejudiced?” Hmmm. I heard those same allegations here in California about proposition 8 returning our state’s marriage definition to that of a man and a woman only. Liberals usually use this kind of lingo: “narrow-minded. medievel, backwards, pig-headed, intolerant. Yada yada yada…”

Would you have called Jesus “intolerant” when he made it clear that divorce is against the law of God and can only be given in cases of adultery? What would you have called the Lord? A lot of folks would call that intolerant! Jesus said, “I am THE WAY.” Your Church’s spokesmen, namely the “presiding bishop” (laugh laugh) said in a press conference, “Jesus is not THE way, but one of many ways to God.” Hmmm. Some call that tolerant and open-minded, the Fathers would call that heresy. So drop the labels, Jane. It’s corny.

You said, “why did you go back? Must be something you needed?”

You really want to go there, Jane? Fine, I went back there because I was struggling with some Catholic teachings that I couldn’t accept, namely birth control and a few other teachings. My wife and I went back to the Anglican church and realized we were being secular humanists, we were being moral relativists just wanting to make Jesus bow down to us and be OUR servant, and us the masters. We wanted a break from our moral compass. And yep, we got it, Jane! You won’t have to worry about my wife joining the Daughers of the King and me running for vestry. I will not go back to Anglicanism. The Book of Common Prayer is not in my library now. I’ll be the first person to tell you that the ONLY reasons I went back to Anglicanism was because I felt the Church was too hard and I didn’t want to step up. I wanted to blame the Church for my own shortcomings and my own failures. My wife and I have struggled having our kids so close together in the last few years and our parish is so overwhelmed with a priest shortage that we wanted more pastoral care. It has all been about US not Jesus. I have never believed in Anglicanism, but I wanted a feel-good, easier catholic church. After about a month of Anglicanism, I realized our salvation was now on shaky ground, we felt a calling of the Holy Spirit and I know that we didn’t belong there.

By the way, when did I say that sisters in Christ, especially nuns, “don’t count?” Thanks for putting words in my mouth as usual. I have a deep respect for nuns and consider Mother Theresa, Mother Angelica, and many other nuns to be heroins to me. I have a deep respect for the Blessed Virgin Mary, another important element of Catholicism lost in Anglicanism by and large (with some exceptions like in GKC’s church). I have a great deal of respect for women, Jane. I have a mom, a wife, a daughter, and girls in my classroom. I treat women with respect and hold them in high esteem. Don’t try and indicate otherwise. You don’t know me well enough. Just because I don’t want women clerics doesn’t mean I don’t respect women or their dignity and accomplishments. I grow really tired of you episcopalians trying to paint any catholic who’s against women clergy as intolerant Muslim men that would beat their wives. It’s just silly.

And by the way, nice job quoting Shakespeare, who was a Catholic living in a persecuting, hateful Anglican society that made Catholicism illegal. Timely indeed!

Last thing. I will agree with you. Yes, I know, Scott and Jane actually agreeing. You said, “well, you’re in the right place [the Catholic Church]” I sure am! And thanks for the Happy Advent wishes LOL…

You can’t really be as confused as you sound here, or maybe you can be. As always, Todd, thanks for the comedy. I’m confused? Hmmm. You and I debate on and on and on (and I always back up my stuff with history and sources while you just make allegations and use the typical Anglican rhetoric of intolerance and arrogance, etc.) and my opinions with you are pretty much the same, pal. I’m not confused. What I am confused about is WHY do you come in here? You’ve said you openly hate Catholicism and you’re always opposed to any Catholic thought whatsoever. You relish every opportunity to bash Catholicism. So what’s the point? Why are you in a Catholic forum? I’ve asked that question of you many times and like all questions asked of you, you don’t answer them. I think that’s the indication of who is confused.

So some Catholic priests molested some kids. Yep, you’re right. I’ll leave the one, true, Church because 107 kids got molested by some sick, maniacal, depraved, perverted priests. You’re right! Because, after all, it was all the pope’s fault and the entire Church’s fault that that happened right! We all knew about it and were in on it! Yep, you caught us! Give it a rest.

I’m glad no Anglican priests have ever molested anyone! In Turlock, CA, about two and a half hours from here, an Anglican priest had been involved in such allegations. You better leave Anglicanism now, Todd! One bad apple spoils the lot, is that your philosophy? Geez-louise.

Here’s a parting thought, and I know you won’t answer it, you never do. But what the heck! Can you please name five major contributions of the Anglican Church to the world. Why are you a part of it?

I do have to compliment you, Todd. I’ve been on a lot of internet forums and your troll talents are superb. They’re probably the best I’ve seen yet. I go on the San Francisco Giants board a lot and Dodgers fans come on there and harrass em like crazy. You really have it all over them. You’re great at joining a forum of people that you despise and trolling along. Hats off.

I’d say that’s pretty uncharitable. To get me to address a Catholic priest as Father would require me to believe that he is actually in succession to the Apostles (which I don’t). Offended yet? You should be. You seem to have no issue with offending others.
I do not like offending folks, Todd, even you, the King of the Trolls. No, I’m not offended, bud, because I’m considering the source. You have nothing nice to say about any facet of Catholicism, never will. You come in here to create discord and rancor toward our faith.

And it’s pretty hilarious to hear that you actually doubt Roman Catholic apostolic succession? That’s just lame. Even your own “church” accepts our succession’s validity! LOL…But then again, you probably don’t agree with your own church either. You certainly don’t follow the 39 Articles…

But hey, man, you have a church with no authority, no theology, no legitimate succession, no legit priesthood, and you can write your own ticket. Just fill in the blanks, Todd, keep it up man!

I’m not offended, but you do give me more material to make me giggle and laugh. 😃

What diocese are you aligned with again? The Hutu tribes of Rwanda or was it the Ubangi Brush Tribes? I can’t remember? Some place with zebras!

Is this your feeble attempt at offense? Sounds like you had better go to confession before you go to mass tomorrow. Throwing around insults and slurs about other people’s churches seem to be your MO now. I state my disagreements with your church and I state why. I state the facts period. If you consider that trolling, then I will consider the SOURCE as well. I’ll pray for you to at least cool off tonight. I have never met anyone with this much hatred for Anglicanism. It is dangerous to hate anyone this much accept of course for the evil one.
