What do Guardian Angels actually do for us?

I heard someone say that if everyone has a guardian angel then why do people get hurt etc. I thought angels cannot do anything to help you without you asking otherwise it would be against our free will, is this correct? The thing is if people call on their guardian angel and do not receive help then what are they for? I read that St Padre Pio told off his guardian angel for not helping him when he was attacked by the devil.

St Padre Pio could see his guardian angel since a child and had a relationship with him that might be described as almost casual, the way a person might be lax and more comfortable to complain and speak their mind to a parent or sibling or lifelong friend, but much more reserved to a stranger.

Guardian Angels pray for us, protect us from the enemy, help guide our decisions, and rule over us as stewards. Just like Jesus in the Sacrament, we benefit more by the graces our angels provide based on our interior disposition, and if our interior disposition is completely uncooperative we won’t benefit at all.

Only God knows the answer to your question. From what I understand about angels is that if a person has an important mission in life and he/doesn’t know it yet or maybe he/she knows then God sends His angel/angels to assist and protect from any futuristic danger. The reason of course is that the person must fulfill/complete a duty/purpose in life. By the way, there is free will as well as predestination. It is Biblical. Scripture does tell us God predestinates some events. God acts to ensure there will be an elect remnant. He does this through individual election unto salvation. This salvation is one of the things God tells us he did in fact predestinate (Romans 8).
Just a quick note “guardian” is not a biblical term. It is more like a Hollywood thing. “Minister” is a better term: Heb 1:13-14

I have what is probably a rather different notion on this one. True, a guardian angel will keep me from experiencing things that will not ultimately be in my best interests, but this does not mean “protected from all harm”. A true, loving guardian, watcher if you will, is going to also see to it that I do experience enough of the negative things of life, even when I attempt to avoid them, to ensure I mature and gain the knowledge needed to be of assistance to those I will come in contact with. Life on the earth is very much a cooperative venture. God wants each of us, at times, to lead one another through the dark avenues and to the other side of trial and challenge. I have a very, very close relationship with my angel and trust them implicitly to see that when I have had all I can stand of the world, I will get a respite, often a lengthy one. But then it’s back to work. To quote General Patton, our duty is never done until the day we die. We can do it willingly or grudgingly. I do both, but am far better off when I approach things with a better attitude. My angel is with me, regardless.

Guardian angels do many things. Yet, they are not life insurance and cannot oppose God’s will. Should our life be required of us, they will pray for our souls, but not intervene otherwise. They may save us or “massage” situations so that they are to our spiritual benefit, even though we may view it as a negative.

I, for one, am very grateful for my guardian angel, as I am a clumsy oaf and have been saved from innumerable slips and falls etc. It is very good to habitually thank our guardian angels - for their benefits which we cannot see in this life.
 
And his angel may have been told by God to allow the attack.

Our angels do probably save us from a lot that they can’t tell us. And I am sure they are part of that voice in our conscience telling us the right thing to do.
 
Guardian angels are ministers of providence. However, they must be allowed by God to act in specific situations.

I have had the sudden urge to look up during walks many times to find sharp branches sticking out into the sidewalk. Thanks G.A.

I also fell straight on my surgically operated on back and didn’t feel an ounce of pain during or after.

I’m not sure what to think about guardian angels. I’ve experienced a few close calls in my life that could have gone either way but I was spared death or serious injury. If that is due to my guardian angel, I am grateful and thankful to God and the angel.

However, I have an older brother who was killed in a freak car accident in which he wasn’t at fault. Where was his guardian angel, asleep at the switch? He was a holier person than I will probably ever be, yet he was taken in the prime of his life. I am baffled by that.

That sounds like only certain chosen individuals can achieve salvation and those who aren’t “elected” won’t be saved!

That’s totally against the purpose of Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross, which was to enable ALL persons to be saved, who exercise their free will to serve God. If only certain individuals will be “elected” unto salvation, then what was that really all about? Do the rest of us get left out?

I really don’t understand your explanation. We can either choose heaven or not – and if only a predestined few are elected unto salvation, then the choices the rest of us make really don’t matter.

My guardian angel does face palms, rolls it’s eyes, sighs a lot, and exclaims “Seriously?” and “Wait, what?” frequently. And it’s always requesting a reassignment
 
Guardian angels are there specially to look after our soul. They can also look after our bodies or prevent us from some physical harm, if that is according to the will of God. But their main goal is to look after our soul and our salvation.

How can they do so? They send thoughts, images or promptings to our minds. We can accept them or reject them. We can listen to them or ignore them. They respect our free will.

In my case, I lived for more than a decade in a sad state of permanent mortal sin. Through these years, I received random thoughts and promptings telling me to go to confession and that death is real and unpredictable. And what definitely confirmed me the existence of my guardian angel and his true influence on my life was the following story:

I’m a really absent-minded person. I forget many things. I have mistaken my home and my neighbours’. I’ve arrived my workplace with a tie and home slippers still on. One day, after forgetting to pray, I just decided to speak to my guardian angel, more or less in these business-like terms: “Look: I don’t know if you exist or not. But if you do, we both have the same goal: my salvation. If praying the Rosary is good for that, and if you exist, please, remind it to me until I die”

Since that night, I’ve been remembered to pray the Rosary every single day, multiple times each day. For more than 5 years in a row. Me, the same guy who forgets to put his shoes on!! And I’m convinced I’ll remember it until I die. I don’t always obey the thought of praying, though…

Henoch was holy and that is why God took him early so that he may not get corrupted by his evil surrounding.

I’ve noticed in devout families, if a child is dies, that it seems that the “holiest” sibling is the one to be taken (talking about older children, not youngsters that are all still innocent).
I personally believe that it’s more a of a gift to the holy individual, rather than a cruelty to them. In other words, they’re soul was already prepared to enter the joys of Heaven, so God brought them. We suffer their loss, but in Heaven their prayers for us are powerful and may even be why we are saved.
In addition, God knows our hearts - much better than we do. And God would know if we would be willing to die if that would mean our heavenly prayers would save the soul of a loved one. So maybe that’s why.

The greater devotion we have to our Guardian Angel, the more we empower them to protect and guide us. I try to pray to my Guardian angel everyday. My experience is that this is true. Mine helps me with everything: working through disagreements with people, protecting me, even holding a good parking space for me if I’m not feeling well and have to go to a crowded supermarket.
