What do "Holy People" confess & how do I become one?

I don’t understand your priest. Frequent confession is good for everyone, not just “holy people” (whatever that means). If anything I’d think the less holy you are the more profitable it is, since the whole point is to forgive sins, so people who commit more grave sins should go to confession more frequently not less!

Confession, what to do?

What do you all think? If your Priest doesn’t seem to want ‘frequent confessions’ then what do you do?
It depends on what you mean by frequent. Once a month is a reasonable timeframe. It was recommended to me by my priest and I see that as a suggestion in many devotional books. I do know several people who go once a week. More often than that is probably not too common among us ordinary people.

If you go to your parish’s scheduled confession time every week and your priest asks you to come less often, than I think in obedience you should follow his suggestions. If once a month is too frequent for him still then perhaps you do need to go to a different confessor.

Sue,

I would offer that when you get to thinking that you are holy, you are probably acting “holier than thou”. I would not be so concerned with “being holy” or “acting holy”, but to continually strive for holiness. Leave the determination as to your “holiness” up to God.

As for frequency of confession, I have found that there is no “one size fits all”, for either sinners or saints. It depends on ones personal disposition, and also that of the confessor. My confessor has told me personally that once every week or two weeks is too often, and I know that I am far from being holy. It has been said that Pope John Paul II went to confession weekly (it is hard for me to think of many more holy people than he).

You might consider finding a good spiritual director who can guide you after he or she gets to know you.

Blessings to you and yours.

Surely it’s up to the individual how often they go to Confession but you should balance it with family needs. Confession is really and truly for the forgiveness of mortal sin but a person may go to have venial sins forgiven or just to receive extra grace. However, if you’re going to Confession every week and going to Communion every day, how do you improve spiritually? There must be other things to being holy too.

Being holy also involves how you live your daily life…putting your faith into practice, living the virtues, being your brother’s keeper. Remember, when we receive the Eucharist, we are receiving Christ — and what do we do with Christ in our soul? We bring Him to the world. Love your neighbor! Think “Mother Theresa”. If Mother Theresa’s example is too much to relate to, then think “Saint Therese of Lisieux” and her “little way.”

That is what being holy is. Look to the saints for examples.

well as one of the holy people I can assure you that we or I have just little things…to ordinary folks like you…to confess! See thats what makes us so holy…like forgetting to say thank you to a store clerk etc…we dont have any huge sins compared to the rank and file but what we do have are still items to address and fix up. It is just as hard to confess such,as the above.sins as say stealing a book from the library,or beng unftaithfull to ones spouse…etc…we ‘holy’ people suffer as well you see…but we do it in a humble way…oops, gotta confess that now…being too humble is a sin as well…

The once a month figure seems somewhat arbitrary. Who are “us ordinary people”? Why is it that someone who wishes to go weekly or bi-weekly should follow a priest’s advice when he suggests monthly, but if he suggests less frequently than that, one should find another confessor?

If one wishes to go more frequently, then that is a striving for holiness that should be respected and encouraged.

Looks like there is no consensus in here on what “frequent confession” is. I am just a little sensitive to this issue in that I was once told by a confessor that bi-weekly was too often. Honestly, that kind of ticked me off.

I would say do what is comfortable.

As for striving for holiness, pick a saint to model after. 🙂

I am merely sharing what was recommended to me and what I have often read. It is because I see the once a month recommendation so often that I thought a priest who suggested that was still too often might be nt giving the best advice. However, you are right to say that if this is her regular confessor and he suggests every 2 months or some other timeframe, than she should obey.

A month seems like such a long interval to me. I see it as surrendering the sin to God so that he can give us the grace to deal with that sin. A month just doesn’t seem frequent enough for that purpose.

If it’s any help, the Confraternity of Penitents suggests that its members confess at least once every two weeks, with an absolute minimum of once per month, according to their constitutions. Every two weeks seems like a pretty good interval to me. 🙂

I came across this thread and I must say I am confused

I am getting an impression that there are members of the Church who are perceived as better than everyone else just because they frequent confessionals more often.

And as far as I thought, even the saints didn’t consider themselves holy because that would be a sin of pride.

I thought we were all sinners, equal in God’s eyes. Am I mistaken??

I think this is why priests often recommend once per month. To go more frequently could lead to a feeling of holier-than-thou and could also lead to scrupulosity. My recommendation is to go when you feel the need, and if your confessor recommends an interval, follow his direction.

I did not say that. I believe that one should go to confession frequently, whether that means bi-weekly or even weekly. If a priest discourages this, then one should probably go to another confessor, if possible. If not, then continue to go to that priest and make the best of it. I find it sad when a priest discourages the path to sanctity through more frequent confession. I find that this goes hand-in-hand with parishes that only offer confession times for one hour per week. The more confession hours that are offered, the more people will come. Even a one-priest parish should make confession times an absolute priority.

I completely agree. It seems that meeting with the roofing contractor, say, is a better thing to delegate to a layman, then not being available in the confessional.

Ohh okay I understand this now. Thank you & God bless

But are you Mr/Miss Holiness in person? The Royal Holiest? See my post no.18.

If you read the lives of the saints, you will find a humility, where they always thought other people were more holy than they were. Mother Theresa mentioned she was for sure going to purgatory. You become holy when you live a holy life but think you are the worse sinner in the world. Saint Francis would make the brothers call him a great sinner to eliminate any temptations of pride.

This is very true. We struggle with mortal sin and major character faults–gossiping, greed, etc. They are like big clods of dirt on the floor. The Saints have cleaned up that and now see dust and small grains of sand–however, they also say that their floors are just as dirty because the floor isn’t swept entirely clean! We tend to mop up a spill and say “great, clean floor!” even though the spot is still sticky when we walk on it! 😛

Going back to frequency of confession. I do think our priests are wise to sometimes limit how often we go because it makes no sense to get out the polishing eqiupment when there is still dust in the corners and a drip down onto the sticky spot.

And we must also reconize that for the vast majority of Catholics, going to confession once a month would be a huge increase in frequency. Those who are striving toward sanctity should develop a relationship with a regular confessor and follow his advice.

Thank you everyone for all of your comments and counsel. I am ordering the book by Fr. Thomas Dubay, Deep Prayer/Deeper Conversion. Since I’m new to this forum it’s so nice to know there are so many good and caring Catholics out there! In reading your answers I realize that one of the problems I may have had with asking the priest about frequency of Confession is that I don’t always go to him for this Sacrament. We often travel and I go to different cities for Confession. When I’m home I either go to our parish or another Catholic Church in our town depending how the time of Confession suits my schedule. I actually prefer going to our priest though because I find his advice most helpful. When he suggested once a month for Confession (saying that more frequent confession was for the holy), I did walk home that day feeling like a spiritual loser, but as I’ve said I’ve been following his advice for about a year now. It may have been a good thing though, in that during this year I’ve desired holiness in my life more than anything else. Perhaps it’s time to bring it up in Confession once again for he seems to be quite reasonable in most matters.
