What am I supposed to say after the priest says “The Body of Christ” before he gives me Communion?? And what does the person say that gives me the chalise?? I have only had the Blood of Christ twice & I haven’t been able to understand what the EM has been saying. What am I to respond?? I have recently come back to my Faith and I just can’t remember!! I left in 1973 and at my parish, we only received the Body of Christ. So much to remember!!:o

Thanks,

Yes, when you receive the Body and Blood of Christ, you are to respond with “Amen”.
Welcome back to the Church!

In addition to saying Amen, “[w]hen receiving Holy Communion, the communicant bows his or her head before the Sacrament as a gesture of reverence and receives the Body of the Lord from the minister.” (GIRM 160). Many people perform this bow while the person in front of them is receiving, before stepping forward to receive themselves, but the timing isn’t an exact science.

And, again, welcome back! 🙂

The EM is (should be) saying “The Blood of Christ”. Your response is “Amen” (“So be it”).

Although you never need to receive from the Chalice. If you want to receive Communion, by receiving the host you receive the full Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ.

If you go to the Traditional Mass (“Extraordinary Form”) you don’t say anything. The priest will bless you with the Host and will say “Amen” himself, and you just receive on the tongue.

All good answers already. I would only add that when you say “Amen” you are acknowledging that it is indeed the Body or Blood of Christ. In essence, you are saying “I believe” to Christ’s real presence.

As a somewhat recent convert (February 2010), I appreciate how important this is to you and therefore your desire to get it right. Whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up for any mistakes but focus instead on what is actually happening at Mass and the wonderful gift we receive in the Eucharist.

You might want to see if your parish offers any special “refresher” courses for returning Catholics. If they do, it may be something that you would find really helpful. If not, you may want to sit in on any RCIA classes. Speak with your director of religious education, explain that your are returning and ask for their advice.

Lastly, just in case, if you have not been to confession, then do so immediately. I strongly recommend making an appointment with your priest for your first time back (and don’t worry, it will make his day).

Welcome back!!!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I have asked the priest so many things, I guess I felt better coming here. I was able to go to confession on October 17, 2008, but have only been able to attend Mass four times. I have went the last two weeks & I drew a blank when the priest presented the Body of Christ to me. I was terrified as it was the first time I received in my hand and I had never taken the Blood of Christ before, I think it was just overload!! With the grace of God, I will be attending Mass each week from now on. I am in a very difficult and strange situation and I ask each of you for your prayers for my strenghth to stand up for the Roman Catholic Church. I had been away since 1973, things have changed, and I’m not 17 anymore, either!! Again, thank you for your time.
