I live in a Buddhist country. Many people believe in reincarnation. Sometimes, in the newspaper, on the TV there are stories about the reincarnation of somebody. What do you think about it? Is reincarnation Biblical? Some people attempt to explain that there is reincarnation in the Bible. Is it true? Or reincarnation is just an illusion? Thank you very much.

I think it is heresy, but I don’t know if it’s ever been formally defined as such. I definitely can’t see how it is consistent with the Gospel.

Reincarnation is impossible. We are born oncr, we live once, we die once, and we are judged on the grace in our soul.

Reports on TV about reincarnation are not substantiated. They are based on incorrect beliefs about life and death.

I worked for a husband and wife for five years at their pizza shop. The husband’s family were all immigrants from Britain. One of his nephews born here in the US , probably only 5yrs old, began detailing stories about people he never met and eras he obviously couldn’t read about yet. Now it’s important to note that the entire family is completely secular and not at all religious. So before long I heard how this kid was talking about the 1930’s and previous experiences with deceased family members. Everyone started saying he’s reincarnated! I’m not sure what happened but I believe something demonic was going on in that family. The kid just was seeing and hearing things he couldn’t know at his age.

No, reincarnation is not Biblical. Jesus said that we end up in one of two places, not that we should return to the earth as someone else.

Some people use the hypnosis method to help people remember their “previous life” to deal with some problem.

It’s not true.

Some attribute this saying to reincarnation:

Matthew 11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come.

But the Church interprets that as St. John fulfilling the role of Elijah.

In addition, there are several Doctrines which mitigate against the idea of reincarnation.

For example:

Hebrews 9:27Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,

Anyone who is reincarnated would die multiple times.

James 2:26 For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

At death, the spirit leaves the body. But at the Resurrection, the spirit and body will be reunited. If there were multiple deaths, there would be multiple bodies but only one spirit.

John 5:29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation.

So, the Church does not teach reincarnation.

CCC#1013 Death is the end of man’s earthly pilgrimage, of the time of grace and mercy which God offers him so as to work out his earthly life in keeping with the divine plan, and to decide his ultimate destiny. When “the single course of our earthly life” is completed, we shall not return to other earthly lives: “It is appointed for men to die once.” There is no “reincarnation” after death.

Amen, agreed.

But, let’s not forget that theologically, Catholics believe there is a possibility of a second death.

While we hope to only die once, sadly, many will succumb to a second death; the death of the soul.

See CCC 1014 and Revelation 2:11, 20:14, and 21:8

I would imagine that the Buddhist in your country would find claims of Christian miracles somewhat strange as opposed to what they believe about reincarnation

10 Claims Of Physical Evidence For Reincarnation
Independent of the several religions that preach the existence of reincarnation, paranormal investigators routinely investigate incidents of old souls possibly reappearing in new bodies. The following stories haven’t all exactly seen scientific scrutiny, and the related anecdotes haven’t all been verified, but they contain unexplained evidence that might make even the skeptical mind pause.

If the answer you seek is for yourself or another Catholic, Catholic Church teaching is clear…
There is no such thing as reincarnation.
