I live in a Buddhist country. Many people believe in reincarnation. Sometimes, in the newspaper, on the TV there are stories about the reincarnation of somebody. What do you think about it? Is reincarnation Biblical? Some people attempt to explain that there is reincarnation in the Bible. Is it true? Or reincarnation is just an illusion? Thank you very much.
It’s not true.
Some attribute this saying to reincarnation:
Matthew 11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, the one who is to come.
But the Church interprets that as St. John fulfilling the role of Elijah.
In addition, there are several Doctrines which mitigate against the idea of reincarnation.
For example:
Hebrews 9:27Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment,
Anyone who is reincarnated would die multiple times.
James 2:26 For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
At death, the spirit leaves the body. But at the Resurrection, the spirit and body will be reunited. If there were multiple deaths, there would be multiple bodies but only one spirit.
John 5:29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation.
So, the Church does not teach reincarnation.
CCC#1013 Death is the end of man’s earthly pilgrimage, of the time of grace and mercy which God offers him so as to work out his earthly life in keeping with the divine plan, and to decide his ultimate destiny. When “the single course of our earthly life” is completed, we shall not return to other earthly lives: “It is appointed for men to die once.” There is no “reincarnation” after death.
