OK, so this thread is just for fun mostly but as a guy I ask, what do you ladies like and dislike in a man? On my own I see so many men who have girlfriends but treat them like **** behind their back, are too lazy to work and treat others as if they are below them.

So again, what do you like and dislike in men? Also ladies, how can we man say when a girl is interested in us?

I think OP already inadvertently answered his own question.

I am 77 years old and have never figured what females like or dislike in a man. As far as telling if a girl is interested in you, she will tell you if she is.
Never forget that in American and Canadian Society, it is the female who does the choosing. They just let the man think that he has a choice. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are either lieing or they just do not know what they are talking about. As you grow older you will find out that this is true.

For my self -sincerity, being absolutely themselves, honesty, taking notice of what I have said,
chivalry ,not showing off.

Sometimes I almost get the impression that women are people and are attracted by many different things.

I’ll take a stab at it 😃

What most attracted me to my husband - he knew who he was and was confident about it. He had moral standards and followed them. He was good with kids, kind to his mom, made me laugh, and was neither overly concerned nor overly neglectful of my feelings. Like any true friend he knew that sometimes my day would not revolve around him - but also made sure I knew he was there if I needed him, and would enjoy being with me if I was interested.

He also had one of the most awesome CD collections (this was back in the day 😉 ). When I saw he had everything from Randy Travis to Beethoven to Madonna - and knew the words to both CCR and Tom T. Hall classics - well, who could resist? grin
Basically he knew what he valued, what he enjoyed, and what really mattered - and was willing to wait for someone who matched up in at least some of his interests and at least most of his values.

What I disliked in other guys - those who needed to constantly attempt to flatter or please me along with those who needed to constantly be flattered or pleased by me. Any guy who used foul language. Any guy who did not value faith and family. Any guy who was irresponsible. Any guy looking for me to “fix” or “solve” some problem of theirs. Any guy ready and willing to “fix” me or what they perceived to be my problems.

He knew I was interested when I called and left a message saying thank you after our first date - even though I knew he was working out of town and wouldn’t be back for a few days. (We met thru a phone dating service - pre-internet). I knew he was interested when he called me back long-distance to arrange a second date for when he got back in town. (Long distance was always additional charge back then).

He knew I was still interested when I dropped a bag of black jelly beans (his favorite) off at his house as a surprise. I knew he was still interested when he was willing to sit through an all day martial arts tournament (14+ hours) to see me compete for six minutes - and took me out to dinner afterward (even though it meant waiting even longer while I went home and showered/changed).

Have we had rough patches? - Sure. But I know the safest place in the world is in his arms. And he knows I will always be with him through anything this world can throw at us.

How do YOU find that? Don’t know - just keep looking, I guess. Work on being the best person you can be and keep putting yourself out there. Look for someone who shares at least one of your passions (music, books, NFL football - whatever) and see what happens.

Good luck - and God bless!

You might want to mention what age frame you are talking about. Women may want different things at different stages in their life.

I could write a long, long answer to your question about my likes and dislikes - and I almost did but then decided that is just like writing a profile for a dating website. I might as well spend time reworking my eharmony profile!

Everyone is different and your original post shows that you are starting to think that everyone is the same. Just think about what you want in a woman and go find her!

This is the only approach that works. I can tell you what I like and looked for, but I can’t tell you what women as a group like and look for because there is no way to generalize that.

I will say that from what single women around me have told me over the years regarding their likes, dislikes, turn-offs and non-negotiables, I don’t understand a lot of women either. And I say that as a woman. Most of these women are now happily married and our husbands—all fine men with good characters—are as different as night and day.

What do I like in a man? Well, I like an intelligent, educated man (educated to my level, preferably, or more). Of course, if he’s good looking, that’s nice, too, but not as essential. I like honesty, integrity, independence, faith, good provider.

I admire a hardworking man. I like it when we have something in common. I like it when we feel we are on the same wavelength, understand each other.

I like a man who would be helpful, supportive, kind, good.

I don’t like liars. I don’t like laziness. Though, in the past, I have been in relationships with guys who were very lazy, unhelpful, liars. I don’t know why I did that, though, but as I’m older, I think I’m getting more cautious, and hopefully, better able to distinguish that.

I would like a man who’s faithful, who I can respect, be proud of. I like a responsible man. I hate it when men are irresponsible.

There are a lot of articles written on how to tell if a girl is interested. Really, I think when we are, it’s sort of obvious, to everyone! It’s a difficult thing to try to hide. Others around will be saying to me, “You’re in love!”, “You’re so obvious!”

I know I’d find myself suddenly dressing better, nervous. I’d be trying to really put my best foot forward.

When a girl likes a guy, she will sit next to him, lean towards him. Her body language, feet, or knees, will point towards him. She’s laugh or smile more. She will “light up” around you if she likes you.

I think women, especially older women, like security, though I know that sounds terribly unromantic. It’s quite practical. In a younger woman, she’ll say things like “Love is all we need”. An older one will say that love and at least a decent living is also necessary.

I think younger women go a lot by their feelings, ignoring a lot of things…saying their hearts are telling them this or that. As women have gotten burned more, they begin to learn what matters. I think older women will also listen to their hearts but be more likely to listen to reason, as well, see a relationship as unworkable, just not even start it.

A younger woman will often have infatuation, assume it’s love, and go off with just any man, no matter how terrible he may be feeling he’s “the one”, her “soul mate”, etc. Some believe their feelings are the only criteria to use, and that’s not correct. We need to balance this out with reason. If he has flaws, a younger woman, especially, will think she can rescue him, fix whatever’s wrong with him. An older woman has usually learned to accept him more as he is, not try to fix him, that it generally doesn’t work, anyway.

I’m young and silly and have never had a boyfriend, but since I’m under the impression that you’re only about 20, maybe my perspective will be useful to you anyway. 🤷

I think on a basic level, in terms of what would pique my interest in the first place, a guy would have to be intelligent, willing to converse about interesting subjects, and come off as interested in my opinions, too. Being decent-looking wouldn’t hurt, but as long as the guy isn’t obese and adheres to a minimum standard of self-care, he’s probably fine. Anyone who acts creepy, dismissive, annoying, or disrespectful is disqualified, no matter what other qualities they may have. But other than that, as long as the person were willing and able to have interesting conversations with me about things that we both know something about (and if I weren’t already interested in someone else), I’d seriously consider going on a date with them.

However, no non-creepy, non-annoying person has ever asked me on a date. Sigh.

If, hypothetically, I were to get past that stage, other things would become more important. Faith, goodness, demonstrating care for me, being willing to help me with things, demonstrating care for grades/activities (or work, when I get older), dependability and honesty- all of that would be essential in a relationship.

But as other posters have said, that’s just me. It really depends on the person, because everyone is different.

As far as knowing whether a girl is interested- again, everyone is different. But if she makes repeated attempts to spend time with you or talk to you, that’s a hint. If you like her, go ahead and ask her out to something or other. Worst-case scenario, you’ll rule someone out. 🤷

I will ever understand why men don’t know what women want… It’s in every movie, novel out there, and its just common sense. They don’t call them chick flicks because they have female stars…

Women want a man who is responsive to them. If she is happy, he is happy and wants to celebrate that. If she is sad, or has a problem, he does NOT walk away in anger, telling her to “sort yourself out!” He engages with her and sympathises with her. If it is something he can fix, he does. Especially if its a problem he has caused. Even if he doesn’t understand why.

Her problems are your problems. Not because they make your home life difficult, but because you have her back. Never cease to have her back.

Do not emotionally or physically abandon her.

Never cease to court her. When you stop, the relationship will eventually fail. She has a choice to stick with you or to leave you each and every day. Act like you want her to stick with you, and make it worth her while.
And I don’t mean money…

Women are deep creatures and we look beyond the surface.

When your wife tells you that she will not compete with the dog for your attention, it’s not that she doesn’t like the dog. It’s not that she resents you petting the dog. It’s that you are treating the dog better than you are treating her.

Look beyond the surface. The problem is rarely just a specific action or non action. It is what it means. The world is a meaning filled place for a woman.

If she suddenly rearranges the furniture, or worse, changes her hair drastically, there is something wrong. If she suddenly starts a hobby she has never had an interest in before, especially if she hides it, there is something wrong. Systemically, not specifically. She is looking to regain control of her life. She must therefore feel that either you have taken control of her and her choices, or something else has. Ask. And listen without dismissing her concerns.
Most of all, DO something about it.

Never walk away or be dismissive of her crying. She’s not trying to manipulate you, she is hurting. You walk away from her pain and you walk away from her. You abandon her. Doesn’t matter the reason for her pain. It’s there and it’s important. To both of you.

If she praises you for something, she wants more of it, and similar things.

Don’t revise your mutual history to make her the bad guy. Don’t make the good times you’ve had a lie by dismissing them or where and when they happened.

Never, ever lie. About anything.

She wants her autonomy. Don’t take her choices in life away.

Do not be more concerned about money than her welfare.

Do not be critical.

She wants your emotional support.

She wants to be consulted about questions in your life, whether they concern her or not. Value her opinions.

A woman likes it when she is reached for. Just a man does. If you don’t make the moves, she will often figure that you don’t want her anymore. That will kill the romance right then and there. From there it’s a spiral downwards to once in a while…

Men seem to know this whilst courting. When they get the girl they forget all of this. No wonder women file for divorce most often.

Where’s the common sense?
Treat her just like you’d like to be treated yourself.
Somebody famous said that once, I think…

Women tend to be loyal, and it takes a long time for us to leave a marriage or serious relationship. If she walks, it’s because things have been wrong for a long while, and she has given up any hope that it will change.

Sorry, you can do all this and still have them leave. Mid-life depression and all that, which women are more susceptible to it than men.

Different people want different things. Some even want to be abused. Get to know the individual, figure out if you’re compatible. Don’t think everyone wants the same things-- they don’t.

But long term advice-- treat her the way you want your daughters’ husbands to treat them. You will be the archetype for men in your daughters’ lives, they will observe the way you treat your wife and that will be the standard set for the men in their lives.

Make it difficult for men to live up to that standard of respect, love, caring, commitment and sharing of responsibility.

Here is a novel idea that differs from the rest. Don’t worry about what women “like” and “dislike.” Be yourself and don’t bother conforming to what people want. Christ didn’t care what people thought of Him. He came with a purpose and people either were on board or not. If they weren’t, He didn’t change to win them over. He won people over by being Himself. You should do the same. If women like what they see, they will make themselves available. If they don’t, then they may not be the kind of girl/woman you want to be around anyway.

When I was in my 20’s what I longed for was a guy who “liked” me to be someone I “liked”. It seemed as if the ones I liked never liked me back and vice versa. That was a common complaint among girls my age then. I think it was the same for guys. Sometimes it takes awhile to get that right fit. It didn’t happen for me until I was 27 and he was 24. Interestingly enough, a good friend of mine that worked with him heard him talking about what he wanted in a girl and how he never thought he would find the right girl for him and she tried to get us together. We were both Catholic and both interested in acting and music.

Believe it or not, I wanted a virgin. Unfortunately, that boyfriend gave in to pressure in his past. He worked with some forward women and he was pretty cute and sort of on the shy side. The bad part about that, though, is he was sort of open about talking about his past, although he just dropped a few sentences that made me “suspcious”. That kind of left the door open for me to worry and then tell him I needed to know how far things went, how many women, etc. It really was not as bad as it could have been, but I got concerned over the fact that he just went along with the program when a forward woman presented herself to him… I would have rather he had his first time with someone he loved than someone who lead him into a bedroom and basically said here it is. He actually told me details because he was mad I wanted to know what happened. That caused me to have pictures in my mind, which caused problems for us for quite a awhile. And I remember thinking how much I wanted to fall in love with a virgin and maybe get married.

We got over this problem and were together for nearly two years and nearly got engaged. But we were too young I guess to really make it work. I lost my father at the age of 22 and zi think that effected my maturing process.

Anyway, what I want to say is I think that when a woman says they want to know about your past with women, they don’t want a lot of details. Women can visualize easily if given details. The last thing you want is a woman who has the image of you and another woman in her mind, even if it is just you and another women in love…

If you are a virgin and want to give that gift to a future wife or someone you deeply love, don’t be ashamed and yet be secretive enough to keep her guessing. Too much information either way in the beginning ruins things.

When I think back on this, I can say what I like is a man who can say no to things he may want but he knows are wrong and, very importantly, a man who does not give in easily when confronted with pressure and has the strength and foresight to know how he would handle himself under pressure. A man who doesn’t just go along to get along is very attractive.

As a guy who has talked with his wife (and our friends) about this on a number of occassions, I think the single word that best describes what all (most) women want in a man is: CONFIDENCE.

Each woman wants different things in men, but confidence seems to be a pretty common thread. This is why, in my humble opinion, women often choose the bad boy (cocky, treats her poorly, etc.) guy over the nice guy. The bad boy acts confidentally and asserively and the nice guy (often) does not. Just my two cents…

All women are going to give you a different answer on what they like in a man. What I like in a guy is goin to be different than what my friends like. It a question that cant be answered.
