After reading all of these posts, it is clear that having the Mass in Latin is best. It would avoid all of these problems. :clapping:

Kathie
AMEN!

I think we should have no Mass at all, heck… no church at all! Let’s all join the Quackers, whatya say?

The correct response is:

“And also with you.” Period

The alternative response is new-agey, and implies that the soul is seperate from the body to which it is assigned.

.
In the Orthodox Churches the response is “and with your spirit.” It has been that way for quite awhile and is not new agey.

While they’re at it, I wonder if they will get rid of the orans posture when responding “and also with you?”

“And also with you” combined with that dorky hand thing makes me laugh. When did that hand thing creep in?

Is that the “Lift up your Hearts” freethrow? Bend at the knees, toss your imaginary heart up to God.

Positive prayer posture or not, do people realize how they look?

I guess I just progressed in my prayerlife where I don’t have to do the handmotions.
And Thank God! I am in a church that doesn’t do it.

I’m sorry I have to go put a chapel cap on and go to Holy Mass.
I’ll put the flamesuit on when I get back.

That’s kind-of it, but I talking about the spin your hands from palms down to palms up move, with a little flap of the elbows at your side, all ending like you’re carrying a platter, while saying “AAWY” in a monotone. It’s a lot sillier looking than I could ever describe it here.

I’ll bet you’re lookin’ good with that chapel cap, today. Say hi to all the other ‘wearers’ for me. Without saying a word (like bock, bock) about ‘hats’, I’m gonna take my DW to Mass, too.

Have fun.

The french (as the spanish) use the exact latin translation.
“And with your spirit”.

The french mass is closer in traduction to latin than the american english one.
As cargopilot said, this is going to be fixed in the “forthcoming new English translation of the Mass”.
That’s why the french and spanish mass do not need a new translation as we do.

When we say, “And also with you”, we are asking peace to fall upon this priest body, blood and soul, whereas in the alternative they are asking for peace upon only the body.

This is a very ancient heresy which implies anythign physical as bad and spiritual as “good”

The response is not changing.
This does display quite a bit of ignorance about the traditional usage and thought of the Church.

Despite the fact that “And also with you,” is a poor translation, we need to observe the law of the Church, and the approved bad translation is the normative one for the English-speaking world.

No, the correct response is *Et cum spiritu tuo, period. Anything else is simply a translation. *

Oh. You mean the upward scoop? I don’t know when or why that got started but I have noticed only a couple of people doing that at my Church. Usually visitors. At other family members Churches in my area, almost everyone does it.:confused:But at those same Churches, no one is bowing during the part in the Creed " and by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary and became man." And it even says to bow in the Misselette.

How innovative!
I hope to never see it.

I’m going to report in on the Headcovering thread next.
