What Do You Do if Things Have The Triple 6?

God is not upset by random things like 666 in a serial number. God is offended when we consciously choose to sin. If you do not intend to sin, you do not offend God.

Are you receiving medical help for your OCD?

Betsy

Medical help,no. I’ve been told that it’s all in my head and that medication can only do so much if I don’t work on this myself. I was getting better but it seems it gets worse along with stress. I thought about this topic as a result of a slightly stressful situation, and along came a bit of OCD

Is this related to the same silliness one sees frequently in office towers where there is no 13th floor?!

So would OCD be a grave superstitious sin? Much if theses superstitious thoughts are due largely to my OCD. Would I be committing a mortal sin if I give into my ‘religious OCD’ impulses?
Only if you can control it. If your OCD makes you wary of the number 666 then you need to talk to a Priest or Spiritual Director and a therapist and get help with your OCD(I just read that you are having difficulty in getting help with the OCD so perhaps the Spiritual Director would be the best source right now).

The question of course is, does your OCD cause you to purposely look at numbers on things to make sure you don’t buy anything with that triple six on it? Or does it cause you to avoid anything obviously with said number?

Be thankful you didn’t live here in NM living between the cities of Gallup and Farmington - we used to have a highway 666. About 5 years ago they changed the number (we got new numbers an a few other highways too so it wasn’t just the number that changed it). Yes, it used to be called “the Devil’s Highway”. I have traveled it any number of times but have had no need since they changed the number.

My prayers are with you for a resolution to your OCD. Also checking out that Scrupulosity site someone else mentioned might be a good resource for the OP.

Probably. In many large towers they put the pumps and motors in the space that would be #13. But it is pure silliness to think the floor does not exist. After all there is still air and matter taking up space.

Dunno, but:

We just finished the fire-alarm system on a BIG expansion to a casino/hotel complex. There is NO 13th floor. Not a mechanical space, nothing… The elevator goes 12… 14…

Don’t ever bring up 666 or 13 in a Casino environment! They are too wierd. They’ll spend $100’s millions on a hotel expansion that doesn’t have a 13th floor!

(Totally screwed up us construction guys, as the blueprints we had were “non-superstitious”… and the physical 13th = building 14th… and so on!)

Did a doctor tell you this, or someone else?

Betsy

I understand being weird about that number when it’s gas or something like that I always try to add a piece of gum, drive an extra mile, whatever… weird i know but i just dont like that number. usually i pay no attention to it.🙂

If I’m not mistaken it was probably both, I went to a doctor who suggested I may have anxiety issues and i have been told by other people that it’s in large part in the mind. O well, I’m trying to kick the habit now and at the moment seems to be working.

I hope you’re not trying to do this all by yourself. At the very least, you need to be in partnership with one (and only one) priest who hears your confessions and whom you obey unquestioningly in all matters of conscience. You need to tell the priest that you are definitely scrupulous and dealing with what seems to be OCD, rather than simply confessing the many things you are afraid are sinful. That way you start out on the same page and can get some real help. Please tell me you’ll do this!

With things like the triple 6, it’s pretty easy to control. Thoughts on the other hand are another story.
I have mentioned it to my preist and it has been helping but it’s not like an appointment thing, though it would help. I’m just frequently at confession, as you said, confessing fearful sins.

Lol have I ever. They truly are very helpful, I keep them handy when things like this happen.

Why would a Discalced Carmelite be a sin 🙂 ?

The Salesians used to call themselves the S.S. - they have ceased to do so, for obvious reasons. Being a Discalced Carmelite has no connection with obsessive compulsive tendencies; & to be a Salesian does not make one a member of Hitler’s police. So here - 666 is a number, not a cause of evil.

Besides, read it upside down, & it becomes 999, which is for the UK what the number 911 is for the US - does that make the British emergency services a sure cause of evil ? Of course not. ##

Several yeas ago, my wife, kids and I went to New Orleans, of al places, and got a room in a hotel. The room number was (I kid you not) 666. They asked us if woud bother us to stay there. I said, “Of course not.”

Entirely uneventful

I get really uneasy about it. They tried handing me a new license plate over to me that began with 666…no. Made them give me another!

I am reminded of the woman who confessed that she had been to a fortune teller.

The priest asked, “What did he tell you?”

“That I would meet a tall, dark, handsome man and he would send me on a trip.”

“Well, he was right. I am tall and dark, and at least my mother thinks I am handsome. And for your penance, I am sending you to make the Stations of the Cross.”
