We don’t often hear about our previous Holy Father on this site, so I would like to set up a thread where we can explain what made him a great pope.

I like his unwavering orthodox views on morality, his seriousness on matters of faith and morals, the fact that he gave due credit and acknowledged the importance of tradition in the Church, and the way in which he revived the Church’s relationship with aesthetics and art.

What do you like about the Pope Emeritus?

His Jesus Of Nazareth trilogy is why I came back to the faith as hard as I did. He really got into the person of Jesus which gave me a deeper appreciation for the Gospels.

Besides everything you posted, his reverence in offering Mass, his homilies (they sounded like mini-dissertations but one learned a lot from them), allowing the old Latin Mass to be used in the RCC again.

If I think of anything else I’ll edit my post.

It’s now 11: 37 p.m. & I’m turning in. Good night!

Really? Most of what I see about Pope Emeritus Benedict comes from this site.

That being said, I like his commitment to orthodoxy, Summorum Pontificum, and his Augustinian theological outlook.

His motu proprio of 7/7/07, that lifted restrictions on the immemorial Mass of the Ages,.

I had the sense that he’s an astute intellectual, very orthodox, while being a free-thinker at the same time-somewhat like Augustine in that sense. And highly spiritual. Reading one of his books I had the impression that he’s very possibly been granted a mystical experience or two in his days. Not that he stated it as such, but just because of the way he framed a particular concept-can’t remember the details off hand. A well-rounded Catholic IMO. 😀

The fact that he stepped down from the most prestigious position in the history of mankind because he believed that was what was best for the church.

I mean the guy was one of the most objectively intelligent men to wear the ring probably in living memory, but that alone was truly a baller move.

His Jesus of Nazareth books. And his humility through the years while heading the CDF as Cardinal, he was completely and unfairly represented by the press for years and never seemed to take offense. He is a kind man.

I do not like the position of Pope Emeritus, in general.
There should be a Pope and that’s it. If Benedict wanted to be Pope, he should not have retired. Pope for life.

It is not a position, it is a title. In general I agree with you. But I can see the other argument. Being a Bishop was expected to be for life. Now they all must turn in their resignation at the age of 75. Why is the Bishop of Rome different? If we require Bishop’s to resign because of old age, why is it great to have an even more important position only ended in death?

You are entitled to you opinion and I say more power to you. I just do not agree. 👍

He loves cats. His heart is certainly in the right place.

I appreciate that he was honest enough to acknowledge that his health issues were preventing him from carrying out his duties, and resigning so as to allow someone more physically able to preside over the Church. He was interested in doing the right things.

I liked that he was so smart and so grandfatherly. I converted to the Catholic
faith while he was Pope and I was so sad when he stepped down.

I liked that he worked with the Anglcans and Episcopalians and created the
Anglican use Mass. There is a name in Latin for this arrangement, but I forgot
what it is called. I grew up in the Episcopal church.

I also thought he was going to work further to clean up the priest sex abuse
scandal.
