Dear friend in Christ,

What do YOU think about us Catholics and our veneration of Mary?

I can tell you only what I think: Even after renouncing her and seeking love somewhere else and finding anything but love in secular society, the Blessed Mother never abandoned me. She remains with me and reminds me to be humble and of my spiritual need.

If it wasn’t for her and the veneration for the Mother of the Lord I could have spent the rest of my days as an unbeliever. She helped bring me back into the Faith.

She was undoubtedly a very holy woman and I’m grateful that we have her testimony in the Scriptures. I simply don’t agree with the practice of praying to her.

I WONDER WHY it is non- Catholics shed away from these kind of topics; topics posted in the NON-Catholic Forum section. As incredible as this may sound are they somehow embarrassed by their positions?

As the OP of this string I hoped to enter into a charitable discussion here.🙂

God Bless you,

Patrick

I think it’s a great thing to do, and I’m glad that the Orthodox, the Assyrian Church of the East, and some Lutherans and Anglicans venerate the Virgin Mary

Catholics created universities, so great. And Marian devotion is cool

But this is not posted in the non-Catholic section. Your question seems to be asking non-Catholics?

Anyway, to the question I have no quarrel. I do not see it as bad from my viewpoint and as it is in the Catechism.

Regarding the graphic: Three years? How and when was she ever separated from her Son? I have always thought that the two were together from virgin womb to virgin tomb(?) Since Saint Joseph had died, who else to care for the widow?

I think veneration to Mary is a great way to come closer to Jesus Christ. It was through a mediocre devotion to the Blessed Virgin (saying a Rosary that I didn’t even know how to pray, other than an Our Father and some Hail Mary’s) that she gradually drew me closer to her Son during a time when I barely practiced my Christian faith, and had begun to doubt in God’s existence.

Regarding the graphic: Three years?[…]
Just a guess, but I think that might be assuming He wasn’t living with her during His public ministry? I don’t think that would be accurate…but I think it might be what is alluded to in the graphic?

Mary and Jesus were always “together” in his 33 years on earth [less the 3 days in the temple for you pureist].

Mary followed Jesus in HIS 3 year Ministry in the BACK-GROUND; providing for his [and the Apostles needs along with Mary of Magdalene and other women of “means” who supported his Ministry. And NO they did not have even the slightest ROLE in the Ministry besides prayers and financial and provisional support.

I did my Marian consecration last year in December. And I’ll be renewing it again this year before Lent as part of the Nineveh 90 Novena for Life. I wear both the Miraculous Medal and the Brown Scapular and I say many Hail Marys, as part of Rosaries, other prayers, and just on their own, every day.

Mary is my spiritual mom. My own mom died so I asked Mary to be my mom, because I read that’s what St. Catherine Laboure did when she lost her mom. I am sure Mary helps me all day long, along with Jesus of course, because it is always To Jesus Through Mary, never just Mary on her own.

You know how us Irish get when somebody talks smack about our moms.
So I have to fight many uncharitable feelings when people speak against Mary. I try to be kind and just pray for them. But I often wish she’d come down and zap them like she did to the Mary-hating guy who saw Our Lady of Revelation, or to Alphonse Ratisbonne.

All evidence is that she remained with Him over the entire course of His life. Besides, gifting her to John (John 19:26-27) showed that no one else was alive to care for her - He knowing that widows in that day, unless rich to begin with (Book of Judith), were condemned to a life of begging for subsistence. We know he had great pity on widows, witness Luke 7:11 and following, as well as the widow who gave the two small coins in the temple. (Mark 12:42, Luke 21:2) To abandon His mother would violate His Father’s commandment.

And we know they were not wealthy from their sacrifice at the presentation: two pigeons (Luke 2:24). Leviticus 12:6-8 states:
“And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the door of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, and he shall offer it before the Lord, and make atonement for her; then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, either male or female. And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons…"
She traveled with Him at least from Nazareth to the Sea of Galilee/Tiberius, as she was there when they attempted to extract Him from the multitude (Mark 3:7,31). Not to mention the crucifixion.
