What do you think of Scientology?

Conning was his metier. Though as a naval officer in WWII, he was not adept at doing that.

I read maybe 7 volumes of the mission earth series as a teen. It was on of those things where when you’re 16 it’s neat and you look back and say “what a complete waste of time.”

Even then it got tiresome. I never finished the series. I knew by 17 it had been a waste.

I had a relative who was fond of the entire series.

Otherwise, a sterling person.

And from there, he was off. To an ignominious nothing burger of a …hmmm… a period of wearing a naval uniform.

I think Lovecraft’s mythology was much more well thought out and internally consistent that Scientology’s space opera that Hubbard developed in the 60s. As well as a much more enjoyable read.

IIRC, he conned (in the wrong sense) his way to the bridge of a subchaser, of a class similar to that on which my FIL served.

All downhill from there.

It was, indeed. And more thought out and consistent and expanded by the work of Derleth and the rest of the Mythos writers.

I love the Cthulhu and Dream Cycles. I’m halfway through the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath.

I like HPL fiction generally, Mythos far in front. I’ve collected him since around 1970.

Cool, @GKMotley. Which is your favorite story?

Mine is either Shadow Out of Time or the Dunwich Horror.

His first command was a yard patrol vessel. Second was PC 815.

The ultimate MLM scheme. All began with a bet at a Sci Fi gathering:

According to The Visual Encyclopedia of Science Fiction , ed. Brian Ash, Harmony Books, 1977:

" . . .[Hubbard] began making statements to the effect that any writer who really wished to make money should stop writing and develop [a] religion, or devise a new psychiatric method. Harlan Ellison’s version ( Time Out , UK, No 332) is that Hubbard is reputed to have told [John W.] Campbell, “I’m going to invent a religion that’s going to make me a fortune. I’m tired of writing for a penny a word”. Sam Moskowitz, a chronicler of science fiction, has reported that he himself heard Hubbard make a similar statement, but there is no first-hand evidence".

Note, there are far more accounts of this bet outside of Wiki, Harlan Ellison spoke of it more than once.

What really flabbergasts me is not only his creation of Dianetics, leading into Scientology but then getting approved as a legitimate religion for pure tax evasion reasons. Now that it IS declared a religion, it benefits from multiple legal protections.

The guy was definitely a con man to the hilt but brilliant in his own twisted way. I do not admire him for it. I’m disgusted that humans fell for it…any of it…including our legal system that approved it!

It’s not really hard to do in the US. Literally anyone can start their own religion and the IRS is not really going to investigate too much. It wouldn’t look good for the government to start deciding what is and is not a “real” religion. Too much blow back.

Yes, I know. It still drives me bonkers! It’s such an obvious scam…everyone with reasonable knowledge of its history and development knows it. We can figure out how to legally end snake oil salesmen but not religious ones! It’s just one of those things that make me lose hope for humanity…which I rarely do!

I do not usually recommend that people watch South Park, while it’s occasionally funny, it leans more on the offensive side. However, the episode about scientology was spot-on. My dad, God Rest his soul, had an interest L. Ron Hubbard and thought he was nuts. Before the Church of Scientology tries to sue me, this was my dad’s opinion and he died in 1997, not mine.

I know. Wasn’t Scientology banned in Germany or some other place? Or at least the government there treats it like a business? Not sure.

I think you’re right. It may be in more than one country as well. However they did it, I’m sorry that we can’t…and I know we can’t! Doesn’t mean I have to like it! 😂😂😂

I love South Park. Then again, I love being offended! Never said I was normal! 😂😂😂. Plus, South Park is in Colorado as am I!
