What do you think of TBN?

Being from Australia, we don’t get TBN, but we do have Benny Hinn on so early in the morning that no-one would really watch it intentionally unless, like me, you came across it thinking that the TV guide had spelt “Hill” incorrectly!

There just came a point when enough was enough and I turned it off and haven’t looked back, except to say, what a huge waste of time.

One of the major reasons why I started looking for an alternative to Protestantism. It’s more about the personalities than it is about Jesus. There had to be something more than “hell and damnation if you don’t know Jesus” and “give me money to support my ministry” “Come to our conference, so we can sell you more books/cd’s” “Call me w/your pledge of support now!”

I cringe at most of the names OP listed. I cringed before I converted to Catholicism, but now I understand why I have this reaction.

A lot of the people on the list just come off as frauds and seem to have personality cults.

Benny Hinn - fraud/scary

Paul and Jan Crouch - Jan’s hair…seriously, what is up with that? I know, it’s vain, but wow.

Rod Parsley - even though I’m political, the way that he tried to combine politics and religion made me really uncomfortable. And that was outside of the constant screaming. Same with Joyce Meyer (w/out the screaming).

Kenneth and Gloria Copeland - something is just off about them. Can’t put my finger on it, but too much talk about money.

John Hagge - too much fire/brimstone. Too much about selling books/just angry. Very into the “end-times”.

TD Jakes - ugh. another one. Movies and books and buy the CD’s.

David Jeremiah - I actually liked David. He doesn’t come off like a zealot who’s going to lynch you if you don’t agree with him.

Joel Osteen - tool. He seems like a nice enough guy, but again, more about the books/cd’s. Selling the products.

Paula White - seriously disturbed. Something’s off w/her too.

Yeah - that’s my two cents.

They have a policy of not allowing any show that bashes any other denomination and that seems to include Catholicism.
It seems to me that TBN will never show stuff featuring Michael Voris.

I used to watch it all the time when I was a protestant-non denomonational. I don’t think I really believed what they were preaching/saying though…

But remember these people???

Benny Hinn

Paul and Jan Crouch

Myles Monroe

Rod Parsley

Casey Treat

Marylyn Hickey

Kenneth and Gloria Copeland

Roberts Lairdon

Kenneth Hagin/Rhema

Creflo and Taffy Dollar

Charles Capps

John Hagge

Rod Parsley

Leroy Thompson

TD Jakes

David Jeremiah

Joel Osteen

etc etc etc…

Sorry about the long list, but feel free to comment on any of them…

Thanks…
Some of it is material is “prosperity Gospel” and at times it can show orthodox stuff: Old Christian movies, Bishop Fulton, etc, etc.

I don’t watch much TBN. Most of it is “Word of Faith”, a “prosperity gospel” non-denominational denomination (i.e., they deny being a denomination but really are one) that I mostly disagree with. The same goes for Daystar, also a WoF network.

But I will sometimes watch either, mostly for the few non-WoF preachers (such as Charles Stanley and Jack Hayford) or movies.

I saw a program once with the late Kenneth Hagin, the forefather of “word of faith gospel”. Talk about scary:eek:

He had people “falling under the spirit” sliding out of their chairs and sticking their tongues out like snakes. Something he called “the serpent spirit” and as he walked up the aisles, people would start doing this and gyrating in all sorts of physical movements all while laughing hysterically.

I am sorry. That is NOT of God. I seriously got frightened watching that.😦

 Televangelists, this is what kept me away from Christianity for 47 years!!!

Why would you be surprised about Mel Gibson’s Passion being played on TBN? That movie was a hit among evangelical Christians. I’ve watched it several times and any Catholic elements that are in the film aren’t offensive to Protestant sensibilities.

I don’t really get the Fatima thing. That is surprising.

But I remember that they also showed a documentary on the Shroud of Turin (spelling?) that came from the perspective that it was the actual miraculous image of Christ on the shroud.
I think you have a point. They have shown in a limited amount some Catholic programs as well as old classic films (and new). I think though that much of their programs have been dominated by the health/wealth preachers which is something to run from and not to. It is easy to make fun of some of them but that shouldn’t be anyone’s approach. I’m not doubting the sincerity of the founders maybe just their theology and that isn’t something to make fun of.

Is the hair fair game, though?

But seriously, you are right about the sincerity. I happened to watch one night and Jan and Paul Crouch had a guest who had, a few years before, had an affair with another singer who was married. There was a lot of uproar at the time; Christian stores pulling albums from shelves, etc. I listened to the music of both artists and, yeah, it rocked my world, too but the self-righteousness was over the top. Anyway, Jan appologized to the man, saying that something about all of the criticism and judgement at the time and a lack of reaching out in prayer. I thought, “bless you.”

I was going to say “not a Lutheran among them”, but you said it better.
Non-denom indulgences?
Far worse. Their’s is a promise of avarice.

Do they even know what a Lutheran is? LOL! I would assume for them Catholic, Lutheran, Orthodox, Anglican are all rolled into one. Heard a southern baptist on tv once say “That’s why Catholics and Lutherans are wrong!” I was like, “hey good they’re picking on somebody else.” Sheesh…it is mind numbing.

Like you I am less surprised by The Passion being played on TBN than some other offerings, except that much was made for a time of Gibson’s “Traditional Catholicism”.

I’ve also seen some old Bishop Sheen programs on TBN … and have been surprised (delighted actually) even though the programs were not debating apologetics but were rather insightful Christian messages regarding the person of Christ (the programs that I saw).

It is really nice to see Christians banding together more around the many things we hold in common (and against the growing evils in the world) at this time. So … thanks to TBN.

At least the management must know what a Lutheran is. Because (I forget whether it was Daystar or TBN, and there’s not much to distinguish one from the other) for a while they gave a regular show to Mark Jeske, a WELS Lutheran pastor. Of course, since he was WELS (very conservative Lutherans, makes LCMS seem liberal by comparison) and I’m ELCA* (mainline/liberal Lutherans*), he was much too conservative for me… but I liked him anyway, because he was such a refreshing change of pace from all the WoF preachers.

I think TBN aired The Hour of Power program by the Crystal Cathedral in California, which was a Reformed Church in America. They also air preaching by Dr. David Jeremiah, who is Baptist I think.
