I’d like to donate to all of these. Are they all in line with Catholic theology and are not scandalous?

Catholic Relief Services
Catholic Worker Movement
Catholic Charities
Conservation International
Christian Coalition
Red Cross
International Medical Corps
Action Against Hunger
Cancer Research Institute

It is rather reasonable to hope the Catholic orgs would be sound. That as the case may be, if you are uncertain about what all they contribute to, just contact and ask. If you are hesitant of what some money may be used for, you are free to earmark your donations with a stipulation they be used for specific things.

The secular ones get tricky and you will have to do some digging and research there. Again, you may wish to earmark donations to be used in a certain fashion… At my Catholic high school the campus ministry got involved with a charity that on the face of it sounded rather good in working to fight hunger. Then they received promotional videos produced by the organization that very openly praised the Viet Cong who so “bravely lived in tunnels” and south American marxist rebels… A portion of funds people would have given thinking they may be used of food or promotion of agricultural education was being used for “political education and action” in the first world countries…

There is no substitute for due dilligence.

Catholic Relief Services remains above reproach. I can add Seton Foundation (sponsored by the Daughters of Charity) as also above reproach. As for the others, even the Catholic ones, you might want to take a closer look at them. You’re being wise.

Catholic Charities and Catholic Worker, while established and reputable, have reported local conflicts in action from time to time.

Red Cross distributes contraceptives sometimes as well as promotes sex education.

Ask the Cancer Institute if they support embryonic stem cell research.

the only ones I have personal knowledge of are CRS and Catholic Charities, and there only on a diocesan level. I do support CRS with an annual donation, and a child through CFCA, but 90% of our charitable giving is locally through St. Vincent de Paul, diocesan Catholic Charities, our parish and other local Catholic agencies such as the birthing center. we also support Mexico outreach through the parish. We decided long ago to do all our giving through the Church, and only to places of which we have personal knowledge of their administration, funding, use of funds and so forth. we also prefer giving to agencies in which we can also volunteer time and talent.

The Christian Coalition - I checked out their site:

From a conservative and a Catholic perspective, they seem pretty sound. I don’t know if they are a charity per se. They don’t mention their IRS status. They might be a 501c(4) though.

I also like Food for the Poor- they have the highest rating from charity navigator.

I’ve donated to them before. However, when I dug deeper, their Pres/CEO makes about 400K. While their overall admin and fundraising percentages are low, I am very troubled by this. It’s something that I struggle with. Does paying someone with a lot of experience in the distribution industry make more sense than having a larger, but less wall-paid staff?

I have donated to Catholic Relief Services. They are an excellent organization, helping thousands who would otherwise have no hope. I also refer you to Cross International Catholic Outreach crosscatholic.org/index.php?src=&PHPSESSID=d4f158182aa79b2c3eb8fb2a4dbac936. They are also doing excellent work, and send visiting priests to local parishes to promote the organization. I have a spiritual connection to them.

Before contributing, you can call your diocese for recommended charities. Also, here is an online resource that audits a wide variety of organizations and rates them according to their efficiency: charitynavigator.org/

Christ’s peace.
