What do you think of these baby names?

Having been a former teacher of high school freshman I say, PLEASE do not name your child Seamus. Kids are cruel. I’m also not sure about Quinn…the others are great!

I guess it might be regional /generational/cultural, the only Quinn’s I have known are girls 🤷

Although every time I hear Quinn, I think of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. It was the characters last name although I wonder if that show is what made that name popular for girls :confused:
 
My wife loves the name Eleanor. I just think of an 80-year-old lady when I hear it. It has sentimental value, as it was her grandmother’s name. I just feel like it maybe tough in school with that name. Not sure why. Thanks for all the comments

I, too, think of an 80-year-old lady when I hear it.

But when I hear Ellie, I think of a spirited little 2-year-old running around laughing her heart out.
 
I recently went to a Parish retreat or parish mission at our church and the priest, Fr. Tom Sullivan, was talking about naming our children. He said when we name our children it should, notice he said, should, reflect our Catholic heritage and our family heritage. He said this because of so many secular names out there. He said he ran into a Catholic family and when the parents introduced the kids, he remembered their names: PJ( for Pajamas), Snuggles and another name that he said was also ridiculous. He said that Catholics today are not looking towards their Catholic heritage or even looking into their family heritage to see about naming their kids after someone in their family, but most of all after a great saint who their kids could model after.

That was just his advice. I really like the middle names of Thomas and Therese.😉
 
A family I know went for the Irish names as well…

Maureen Brenna
Megan Kerry
Colin Bertram
Tully Patrick

I wasn’t crazy about any of them when they were named, but thought the idea was cool anyway…and of course, as the kids grew up, the names fit them well.

That said, how about using the middle names you suggested as FIRST names…both are really great names!

Seamus Patrick for the win!

I have 4 sons, been wanting to name one Seamus for the past 3 but didn’t get too (and it was my wife who initially thought of the name!)

My 4 sons have very good names (Joseph, Ian, Gabriel and William) but I like Seamus especially.

For a girl I like Quinn, very different.

Quinn really is not one of those names that screams girl to me, my nephew’s name is Quinn Spencer.

Would you consider Quinn for a boy?

Of the others I’d pick Colin for a boy and Colleen for a girl:thumbsup:

My experience with Irish boys leads me to believe that teasing a Seamus might be something you only tried once.

I would reverse the first to Patrick Seamus. Save your son from a lifetime of mispronunciations of Seamus.
Grant Thomas sounds a bit too ordinary to my ears.
Colin Thomas–very good–my second choice after Patrick Seamus.

Quinn brings to my magpie mind the image of the shark hunter in Jaws. And, it is very close to an archaic vulgarity used in James Joyce.
I really like like the other two names, especially Colleen Therese.

Have you given any thought to Padraic for a boy and Bridget for a girl?
 
I like Grant Thomas, that would be my first pick. Colin has been popular lately. Seamus, def a hands down (sorry!)

As for the girl names, I am not fond of any of them. Colleen and Eleanor just seem too old ladyish to me, and I’m afraid she wouldn’t embrace her name and may even dislike it as she grew up. My personal favorites (just for the sake of it, hope you don’t mind!) of irish decent are

Bridgit
Bryna
Eilley
Kaitlin
Rylie
Shea
Tierney

Most of them have such beautiful meanings, too!

Girl: Eleanor Therese

I know the name has been chosen but since we’re talking about Irish names now…My favorite for a girl is Maura. 🙂

I have posted here looking for comments of a possibly boys name. We have decided on Grant for the first name. But, I am not sure with the middle name if we have a Boy. I want the middle name to be after a Saint. Yet, I keep changing my mind. I feel close or drawn to St Augustine, St Thomas Aquinas, St Francis, Thomas Moore (I know that he was not a saint, yet quite remarkable.) But I have such respect and adoration for the Holy Father Pope Benedict. I am thinking more about making Benedict the middle name. Pope Benedict’s love and kindness and understanding is one reason that I am being confirmed at Easter Vigil, but he is not a Saint as of yet. Let me know what you think.

Hmm…:hmmm: I was loving Augustine, but now that you mention Benedict…It’s tough, but I think I lean towards Benedict now.

It’s true that Pope Benedict XVI is not a saint yet, but what a lovely honor to to our Holy Father to name your son after him. And he’ll be a great example for you son, of course.

Plus you’d get the patronage of the original St. Benedict as a bonus.

very partial to Thomas, here in my family! 😉 Patrick is an old family name of ours as well.
