Why is Maryland’s gas bills, etc so high?

oh and juno…yes, I do miss cooking with gas, too…it takes some getting used to.:o

I’m from Baltimore, so I was used to the miserable summers-- high heat and killer humidity–, but not the duration of summer. I mean really! How can summer last from February through November!!! LOL! Now, though, after being here for over 5 years, when the temps get down to “winter” temps of 65-70, it is downright COLD! (Although I do still find it hilarious that Albertsons sells cords of firewood for the one week we get temps in the 40-50 degree range!!)

I’m also curious to see how Gov. Crist’s tax and insurance plans will play out. I’ve heard many people say he will either be a hero or a he will bankrupt the state; there doesn’t seem to be much in between. I guess it will all depend on how many storms we have this year, and how much damage they do. Our home owner’s insurance went up a little, but the agent said he will give us that amount in discounts once we get the roof and hurricane shutters inspected. I know people whose insurance doubled or even tripled, without ever filing claims, so we got off very very lucky.

My goodness! I am so glad my family is getting out of Maryland! They’ve all moved (or are in the process of moving) up 83 a few miles into York County PA. What a difference in the cost of living between Baltimore county and York county. I believe things will only get worse in Maryland as far as taxes go with Martin O’malley as governor.

Anyway, this is way off topic, so I will stop.
Are you on the east or west coast down here? We are on the east coast near Ft. Lauderdale.

I’m near Tampa Bay…I used to live near Ft Lauderdale…and have also lived in Orlando…I loathe Orlando…it just has too many problems…and no close beaches.:o

Running about $120 for May. That’s for 1650 sq. ft. in North Louisiana. Pretty hot with an exposed SW corner! I’ve been consistently saving about $20 a month since going to CFLs.

Anyhow, my May bill reflected 1388 KWHrs of electricity. The highest bill I’ve had was my August 2006 bill (July 6-August 6) which ran $265 for 3466 KWHrs of electricity. I discovered by the next bill that I had a freon leak and used 1,000 less kwhrs the following month.

We average $300-400 in the summer and around $200 in the winter. It’s hot and humid in NC. We set the thermostats on 78 during the day and 74 at night. We also run two dehumidifiers during the summer.

Forgot to mention…with my bill, that’s including running the a/c on pretty much 70-73 degrees. I guess my rates are not bad!

Same here. I am in Pembroke Pines, near Hollywood.
You’re in Pembroke Pines? Me too! What church do you attend? We go to Blessed John XXIII in west Miramar. It is new and we are still in Everglades High Cafeteria. But, you may have noticed the big clearing on the south side of Miramar Pkwy across from the Super Target. That’s going to be us. 👍

Just got ours… We are in S Fl and are having very hot weather; as is most of the nation. Ours has never been this high for June, which is the highest month for us along with Sept. (we go north in July)! $250.00!
In winter we can stay around $100.00 with the cooler weather and the doors and windows open.

Well, hi neighbor! I attend St Bartholomew.
I’m glad that you are finally going to have a permanent building! It looks like you’ll be just a little ways up the street from us. I’ll have to stop in when construction is finished.

I’ve gone to confession at St. Bart’s. What is that they are building just north of the church? I noticed it on the way home from Sam’s.

Come on over and join us sometime. My dd and I are in the choir at 9:00 Mass.

We’re in Orlando area… and we’re totally on electric. Many areas near us have gas (my MIL is only 5 minutes away and has natural gas), but many neighborhoods don’t have it.

We keep our house at 77 day and night during the summer (actually, we let our auto thermostat go up higher during the day when we’re not home)…
Our monthly bill is roughly $120-$150 depending on the month. We have very poor insulating windows (we can tell they aren’t sealed well)… so when we can one day hope to replace those then we’ll see lower prices. We’ve made other home improvements that have helped our bills come down… but I have a feeling the windows are the worst (unfortunately they’re also probably the most expensive upgrade, so I don’t see that happening any time soon…)

Hope that helps!
