What does it mean for the Bible to be inerrant?

heiscoming…

Touching back upon the idea of the Septuigent being the Proper OT text I wanted to point you to a thread that I had started some time back that supports the catholic position. It proposes that St Paul himself endosed the Septuignet in his letter to Timothy. If you would like to read and comment, it is HERE

Also, you had asked earlier for proof that the NT quotes the Septuigent. I had supplied a link but, since you never acknowledged or commented or thanked me, I am afraid you must have missed it. Therefore I am reposting the link.
DEUTEROCANONICAL BOOKS
IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

I hope these help you on your journey.

Peace
James

Dear James, thank you for being patient with me. As I wrote before, there was never a time that I know of that I did not have God in my life with the exception of when I reached the age of accountability to the time I was born again. Yet, even though I went two years dead in tresspasses, I believe the Lord watched over me.

I will remember your wife in my prayers James. I thank you for your links. It will take me some time to address your posts, for this is not the only forum I belong to.

What I would ask of you James is a way I can let you examine a study given me through the unction of the Holy Spirit. I would ask that you try and discern if this study is of man or of God? For we know that the Word of the Lord cannot be torn or debunked. I pray if you do this, you may see what I share with you in a different light, God willing. It is not coinsidence our paths have crossed, and I ask you to do this as one who seeks the will of the Lord and not men.

So I ask you give me your email address so I may send the study to you. And if you cannot find anything in it that is not of truth, you might just see me as something more then a prebyterian, a methodist, baptist protestant in general.

I know the Lord love you and so do I. I believe the reason I have not yet be banished from this forum as of yet is testament the Lord has something for you.

May the Lord watch over you and yours,
Randy

Randy,
I can readily Identify with your statement above for I too have always felt God in my life. Even during the 30 some years I spent in the “wilderness” of sin and spiritual apathy. It is only by His protection that I am here today. And I can truly say that it is only by His hand that I have been able to be reconciled to the Him in His Church.
I will remember your wife in my prayers James.
Thank you. God has truly Blessed me in this lady and I learn more about His love every day that she and I are together.
I thank you for your links. It will take me some time to address your posts, for this is not the only forum I belong to.
Take your time. There is a huge amount of information out there and many wonderful, holy and Scolarly people who can more readily and better answer many issues than I can. As I said before, I am a simple man with a simple perspective. I believe in the Bible and I follow the commands of Christ to the best of my ability.
I may need to think upon this request a bit. Is this something that you have written based upon your own studies? Or is this something that has been given to you that you agree with? How long is it? As you may imagine it is difficult for me to devote a great deal of time to such things. Plus, I am involved with improving and deepening my journey to Holiness. I am using a wonderful book called “The Fulfillment of All Desire. - A journey to God based on the Wisdom of the Saints”. A truly excellent book.

A couple of concerns about accepting your offer.
  1. You wish me to discern if this study of yours is of God or man. Yet I have already stated that I am a simple man - not educated in the finer points of theology.
  2. If I read this and conclude that it is of man, what then? As two christians with differing views, we would need resolve this matter. After all, You believe it is of God, and I say it is not(hypothetically) and Christ prayed that we would be united and of one mind.
How would we resolve this by following Christ?
Do we not then have a situation as described in Matthew 18:15-18?
We would then need to have several others discuss it, and then, if we cannot agree, we would need to “Tell it to the Church”. I know that I can do that, but can you? Can you submit what you write to a higher earthly and visible authority and then be willing to abide by the decision of that authority?
So I ask you give me your email address so I may send the study to you. And if you cannot find anything in it that is not of truth, you might just see me as something more then a prebyterian, a methodist, baptist protestant in general.
Please don’t misunderstand me - I do not see you in a negative light. I can tell that you are ernest and, I believe, honest in your desires. I see you as a fellow sojourner. However, I also see the errors so common to those who are taught gross misinformation about the early Church, her teachings, the origins and history of the Bible (as a volume) and what the Catholic Church teaches today. So I would make the request of you that you study on:
  1. The Church teachings contained in the Catholic Church Catachism.
This one is searchable which makes it very user friendly. Im addition you will find every paragraph is footnoted with references to either the Bible or to some Church Father or document. This it is all well interconnected and supported.
  2. To learn about the real early Church Read the Early Church FathersWhile the Listing therein is alphebetical, looking at the following will get you up to around 200 AD. I think you will find that they are quite Catholic in their views.
Clement of Rome, Mathetes, Polycarp, Ignatius, Barnabas, Papias, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus.
I know the Lord love you and so do I. I believe the reason I have not yet be banished from this forum as of yet is testament the Lord has something for you.
I would say it is simply because you have followed the rules of the forums. Unlike some other forums I have heard of, you don’t get kicked off here for disagreeing. The whole point is to discuss all things Christian.
May the Lord watch over you and yours,
Randy
And May God Bless you and yours

Peace
James

You state you are a simple man. Yet, do you not know that the very apostles our Lord Jesus chose were mere common, simple men.

If you read what I send you, and if you are truly seeking the face of God, you will not deem it of men. I have had many, many try to debunk this. I deserve no credit in this study, for it was given through the unction of the Holy Spirit.
Can you submit what you write to a higher earthly and visible authority and then be willing to abide by the decision of that authority?
If what was given me could beyond all doubt be proven wrong, then would I not have to abide by the decision. To many today are caught up in indoctrination.

I belong to another forum and at this time, the moderator of the forum believes that once a person is dead physically, they will no longer exist until the day of resurrection. Yet, even with the facts given her, she cannot see the truth. 'The reason she can not discern this is because she is either young in the faith, still on the milk of the Word or she is indoctrinated.

You state you are a simple man. Yet, do you not know that the very apostles our Lord Jesus chose were mere common, simple men.
Of course I know that - I also know they spent three years walking with and being taught by Jesus. When I say that I am a simple man, I do not mean to degrade myself in the eyes of God, but rather in the sense that, for me to review what you offer and be able to discern if it is of God or man may well be beyond my ability.
If you read what I send you, and if you are truly seeking the face of God, you will not deem it of men. I have had many, many try to debunk this. I deserve no credit in this study, for it was given through the unction of the Holy Spirit.
You see - this is my point. You are not asking me to review something in order to recieve assurance that it is of God. You are already satisfied that it is of God. Therefore, if I read it and tell you I see errors in it, you will simply assume that I am so far in the wrong since you already “know” that you are right. Therefore your request is not an offer to discuss whether your document is "of God, but rather an attempt to convert me to your way of thinking and away from the Catholic Church.
My suggestion would be to utilize the links I gave you, which I am sure will include addresses, and send your document to Fr. Corapi or Scott Hahn for comment. If you recieve a clean bill from them - that is - That what you have written does not conflict with Catholic Church Doctrine, you will have wonderful assurance indeed.
If what was given me could beyond all doubt be proven wrong, then would I not have to abide by the decision. To many today are caught up in indoctrination.
Beyond ALL Doubt??? Beyond Who’s Doubt???
Think back and reread the passage in Acts regarding the Council at Jerusalem. Look at all of the arguing there was during the council. Think about how much arguing was still going on in Antioch as they waited for word from Jerusalem. Do yo think that the decision reached by the council was "Beyond all doubt’ by every individual in the Antiochian community. I would even go so far as to guess that certain “Judaizers” in Antioch probably left the community in protest of the decision. Yet is was the decision of the Church (bind and loose remember?) and ALL of the Churches were expected to abide by the decision regardless of whether they, personally harbored doubts.
Perhaps, instead of reguiring someone else to disprove your document “beyond All Doubt”, you should consider whether you need to Prove it Beyond All (my) Doubt. One is just as valid as the other.

Yes, a great many people today are “caught up in indoctrination”. I am one of them and I am hoping to become even more indoctrinated in the Truth of Christ’s beautiful Church. Why?
Because by being better educated in my faith I can hopefully help others such as yourself to see the Truth and Beauty of The Church and come and join us.
Well - obviously she is not a catholic so that can explain why she is mis-informed. I wish you luck in helping her to see here error. Of course in The Church we have such a rich tradition of Saintly intervention and visitation, especially by the Blessed Mother, that such a view would just not hold up.

I do wish you well on your faith journey but I must tell you, in all honesty and charity, that so long as you persist in the idea that The Catholic Church went apostate at around 325 AD, and other historical errors, you will not be able truly understand and converse with well catachized Catholics.
If you take the time to seriously look at the links I gave for the catachism as well as availing yourself of the materials here and elswhere written by catholics, you will be able to grow immeasurably in faith and understanding of the tremendous Glory that God has given us in His Catholic Church.
Two other things I will recommend to you - If you can get EWTN, watch the program “Journey Home” Also watch the program “Reasons to Believe”. These are hosted by the gentlemen whose links I posted earlier, Marcus Grodi and Dr. Scott Hahn. If you don’t get EWTN on TV, check the EWTN websites and you might be able “stream” the broadcasts.
Please do this for your own education.

Peace
James

I just had an additional thought or two on the above which I highlighted.
We here know how difficult and frustrating it can be when someone is presented with evidence of a truth yest cannot see it.
I believe I have seen it with you my friend. In this I allude to a statement you made in an earlier post:
For we know that the Word of the Lord cannot be torn or debunked…
You also made this comment regarding the DC books in an even earlier post.

So - What do all of these comments have in common? Simply this my friend.

You believe that God’s word cannot be “Torn or Debunked”, yet you cling to a Bible that is just that - Torn. Seven entire books plus parts of two others were removed from God’s Holy Bible by the protestants.
This has been shown to you yet you have not acknowledged it and seem to cling to your error, just as the person you are frustrated with on the other forum.
Instead of recognizing the Truth of Christ’s Promise to protect and lead His Church - The single entity through which the complete Canon of the Bible was assembled - You prefer to buy into the "pick and choose mentality of the protestants.

You prefer to accept a NT assembled by a group you deem to have already become apostate, and an OT determined by a group who were so good at discerning scripture that they missed the messiah when he came. This makes no sense at all.
You prefer to ignore that Christ set up an authoritative structure on earth called “The Church - Catholic (which means universal)” even though this can be clearly shown in the Bible itself. Prefering instead the nebulous idea of a “Body of believers” with Just Christ and the Bible as guide.
Yes it is frustrating when we are trying to lead someone into truth and they just don’t see it.

I do not say this to be uncharitable. I too believe that our crossing here is part of God’s plan. I believe He has led you here because this is the Best place for you to learn the Truth about His church. So that you may take off the rag of lies and distortions you have been fed about the Church and put on the clean garment of Truth. When that occurs, there will be much rejoicing in heaven.

Dear James, do you think it is just coincidence we have met here on this forum? I don’t believe so.

See, the problem I see with you is that you are totally unwilling to accept anything other then what is fed you of the catholic church. You have your own mind, heart, soul. The catholic church is not what will save your soul. It is only by being born again in your spirit. This is a decision that is between you and God, not the catholic church. Only when a man is born again is he saved from the fires of hell. Then does a man become part of Christ’s Church.

As for truth, the catholic church does not monopolize truth. The spirit of truth known as the Holy Spirit is liken a river where all saints can drink from. It is not the soul posession of the catholic church James.

We as saints are to walk in the spirit, not the world. In this way we can discern things of the spirit. I know I am not telling you things you all ready know.

What I am telling you is the catholic church is not infallible.

I don’t desire to upset you. I love you and pray for you and you wife.

As for the study on baptism, it is not complicated at all and the Lord gave me directions on how it is to be done. And the thing that blessed me most is how different I see the bible after doing this study. Many things I did not understand before became known to me.

Anyway James, regardless of what you decide, I will pray the Lord govern you walk of faith.

Dear James, do you think it is just coincidence we have met here on this forum? I don’t believe so.
Nor do I. I believe the spirt has given us both an opprotunity to learn.
See, the problem I see with you is that you are totally unwilling to accept anything other then what is fed you of the catholic church.
Certainly no more than you, my friend, are unwilling to accept anything that doesn’t fit with your mistaken conception of what the Catholic Church is. As I stated in my earlier post, it is just as frustrating for me to see you ignoring and dismissing evidence supplied to you as it is for you to see your evidence dismissed by that woman on the other board.
You have your own mind, heart, soul. The catholic church is not what will save your soul. It is only by being born again in your spirit. This is a decision that is between you and God, not the catholic church. Only when a man is born again is he saved from the fires of hell. Then does a man become part of Christ’s Church.
This passage alone shows how little you know and understand about the Church and the Bible. But don’t worry - Most non-catholics don’t get it. They see the Catholic Church as just another denomination instead of what it is. The origianl Church tracable to Christ Himself.
As to the salvic issues you raise, of course mu salvation is a personal matter and membership in the Catholic church is no more a guarantee than would be knowing the KJV frontwards and backwards. The Church does not deny this and if you would take the time to really engage in what the Church teaches you would understand this.
As for truth, the catholic church does not monopolize truth. The spirit of truth known as the Holy Spirit is liken a river where all saints can drink from. It is not the soul posession of the catholic church James.
Again you are right - The Church does not monopolize Truth. Rather she broadcasts it far and wide. She even recognizes that those outside the Church can have portions of the Truth within them. However, Since Jesus established an Authoritative Church and we know where that Church is, it’s just foolish to belong to any other. That is why I came back to the Church after 30 years of “looking around”
We as saints are to walk in the spirit, not the world. In this way we can discern things of the spirit. I know I am not telling you things you all ready know.
Would it surprise you to know that this is exactly what the Catholic Church teaches?
What I am telling you is the catholic church is not infallible.
What I am telling you is that, in matters of faith and morals, the Catholic Church is infallible.
Now that our positions are clearly stated, all we need to do to resolve it is, “tell it To The Church”. Any suggestions?
I don’t desire to upset you. I love you and pray for you and you wife.
No offence taken - Birth pangs, physical or spiritual are bound to be unfomfortable.
I thank you for your prayers.
As for the study on baptism, it is not complicated at all and the Lord gave me directions on how it is to be done. And the thing that blessed me most is how different I see the bible after doing this study. Many things I did not understand before became known to me.
Certainly Baptism is not complicated. That is why I do not worry myself about it. I have been baptized and also confirmed in my faith. I left the Church and have come back. Now my task is to grow in holiness and not derail myself with details that the Church resolved centuries ago under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Anyway James, regardless of what you decide, I will pray the Lord govern you walk of faith.
Thank you.
May God Bless and Guide you.

Yet, here we again come to the problem of the Church. How would we resolve on what the church truly is? We both agree that the church is the body of believers with Christ as the head.

Yet, our definition of what must occur for a man to be part of the church are completely different.

I believe that a man must be born again, to enter the kingdom of God, to be part of his Church. What exactly is your doctrinal definition of the church James?

My Doctrinal definition of the Church is precisely what Christ told us it was AND how the Apostles understood Jesus commands and instructions on the matter.
I gave you two distinct and clearly stated passages in the Bible that demonstrate what “The Church” is. Mt 18:15-18 and Acts 15:1-29. This is how the Early Church interpreted Church Authority. That Church was passed to men personally trained by the Apostles then to men who were personally trained by men who were personally trained by the Apostles and on to this day. This is the core of a)Apostolic Authority, and b) Church Authority as Christ Himself set it up.

This really is NOT something that we can just go our different ways on. When you ignore these passages in the bible you ignore
  1. Jesus own command (in the case of Mt 18:15-18 and
  2. The obvious understanding that the Apostles had of that authority as given to them by Christ and further enlightened and guided by the Holy Spirit after Pentacost.
If you accept that Christ did not intend an authoritative Church then Mt 18: 15-18 makes no sense and Act 15:1-29 has no binding authority. If you accept that The Church does Have authority then both of these passages make perfect sense.

Finally St Paul supports this when he declares “THE CHURCH” is the pillar and Foundation of Truth.

Now I will set this Challenge before you.
Show me - Clearly and In Scripture - that Jesus did NOT intend His Church to be unified, visible AND Authoritative.

Peace
James

Thanks to both of you for sharing on this thread. I have not read it all.
I did want to mention that the original KJV did include the DC. Although I am sure you are aware and may have discussed earlier in the thread. I found it interesting that these books were eventually taken out of the KJV and then seemingly totally rejected. How odd, it would seem at the least they would be well read and promoted as good Christian literature outside of the bible by Protestants.

Many Blessings,
Doolin

Your welcome. -
Actually I believe that a number of protestants do consider the DC’s as “good Christian liturature” but simply will not accept them as part of the “the bible” even though they were, in fact, part of the bible for 1000 years. Then they want to say that the Bible is unchangable and inerrant.

What I find so frustrating in talking with heiscoming… is that he believes in the inerrancy of the Bible while at the same time ignoring the very command of Jesus to obey The Church. It is a “600 pound Gorilla at the table” that, you will note, he will not even address. So what credence can we give to his theology - That he bases in the “inerrant Bible” - When he refuses to obey the commands of Christ?

James

Now I will set this Challenge before you.
Show me - Clearly and In Scripture - that Jesus did NOT intend His Church to be unified, visible AND Authoritative.
Jesus most certainly wanted the church to be unified. It is the corruption of men with the help of the devil that has brought corruption unto the faith.

Yet, you see nothing but the catholic church. I see in heaven just as it should be on earth that there is no denomination.

And through it all, from generation to generation the Lord has indeed keep a remnant who stayed steadfast unto his Word. God’s Church was always unified. There is many a denomination that will remain on the day of resurrection.

Our argument James is you believe the catholic church in the one true church. I believe that all those who stand on the gospel of Jesus Christ is the true church.

Revelations 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

And through it all, from generation to generation the Lord has indeed keep a remnant who stayed steadfast unto his Word. God’s Church was always unified. There is many a denomination that will remain on the day of resurrection.
Could you please tell us what those remnants were between the fourth century and the fifteenth? I asked a Protestant once, and he only told me to search for myself. 🤷

How odd, it would seem at the least they would be well read and promoted as good Christian literature outside of the bible by Protestants.
Dear Doolin,

Go ahead and read the DC. Then compare them and see if you find things that are contrary to the NT. Also compare them to things in the OT. I believe you will see much of these books are more fairytale not scripture.

Could you please tell us what those remnants were between the fourth century and the fifteenth? I asked a Protestant once, and he only told me to search for myself.
I will answer your question if you answer mine.

Was William Tyndale a saint or a heretic?

My Doctrinal definition of the Church is precisely what Christ told us it was AND how the Apostles understood Jesus commands and instructions on the matter.
Explain to me then why the catholic version of baptism is inconsistant with scripture?

Greetings in the LORD, heiscominginthe!

I recently did a comparison of the books of Sirach and Wisdom with the books of the New Testament. I wonder what you think of the concordance I’ve noted.

With the love of Christ,
Pete

I will answer your question if you answer mine.

Was William Tyndale a saint or a heretic?
He was a heretic.

Here, I’ll clarify my question: could you please tell us (ie, give a list thereof) which remnants, between the fourth century and the fifteenth, you consider to have “stayed steadfast unto God’s word”?

My Doctrinal definition of the Church is precisely what Christ told us it was AND how the Apostles understood Jesus commands and instructions on the matter.
I’ll tell you what - I am frankly getting a bit tired of answering your questions while having mine ignored.
You cannot deny that Christ and the NT writers knew of and used the DC’s - We supplied you with the evidence. - So you iognore it.
You cannot deomstrate from scripture that Jesus expected the Church to be an “Ethereal collection of believers” without a clear and authoritative earthy component because it doesn’t exist in scripture - In fact the opposite exists in scripture. - So you ignore it.

Instead you try to divert the conversation to a detail.
A detail about the way baptism is conducted. I can assure you the Church has the authority to deal with this and thus, whatever your concern is, it is not a problem for God
Now to answer your question I will say this,
When Christ estavbished His Church he gave it the Authority to “Bind and loose - WHATEVER”. That is a pretty broad lattitiude.
Furthermore once the Church has bound or loosed something on earth, it is bound or loosed in heaven.
That my friend is How Christ set it up - Simple and straightforward. And THAT is why The Church is the Pillar and Foundation of Truth
The second part of my answer goes directly to the Authority of the Bible - That collection of books assembled by the Catholic Church.

I am going to be a bit blunt here so bear with me.

Just how stupid do you think that the 4th century Bishops were???
Your complaint is that the church made some or other change in Baptism in around 325 or so and then 75 years later assembled a Bible that undercut their own teaching.
Can you, in all honesty tell me that this makes any sense??? Would a heretical group do this??? And don’t tell me the “God protected His Word” because it just doesn’t wash.
Can’t you see how rediculous your reasoning is here??
The People who assembled the Bible knew full well what they were teaching AND what they were putting into the Bible canon!!!
They weren’t living in some vacuum where they were undercutting themselves!!!
Lets give them a little credit here.
If they were, as you believe, somehow heretical then the Bible would reflec that heresyand you should not be following a bible assembled by an heretic group.
If they were, as I believe, maintaining the True faith then the Bible reflects that true faith and everything is good - The Bible today is indeed God’s Word.

Now - at this point I am finished answering your questions until you choose to clearly and intelligently address my posts about Matthew 18:15-18 and Acts 15:1-29.
If, as you say you believe that the bible is the inerrant word of God, then get with it my friend - **Obey Christ **and “Tell it to the Church” so that we can get these answers resolved

Peace
James
