What does it mean to abide “in Christ?”
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.”
Paul tells us that those who are “in Christ Jesus” do not walk according to the flesh and so they are not condemned.
1 John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.”
1 Timothy 2:3-4 “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
If we know Him (if we have come to the knowledge of the truth), then we are in Him.
1 John 3:24 “Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.”
John tells us that the person who keeps God’s commandments abides in Him and He in him. In other words, you must obey the commandments in order to claim that you are abiding “in Him (Christ).”
John 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him”
We “love” Jesus by keeping His commandments. If we keep His commandments, then we will be loved by His Father.
1 John 3:22 “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”
We must keep God’s commandments and do those things which are pleasing in His sight if we expect to receive what we ask from Him.
1 John 4:21 “And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
Mark 12:29-31 “Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. 30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
We have to love both God and brother (neighbor) in order to be in obedience to His commandments.
1 John 2:3 “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.”
If we do not keep His commandments, then we do not “know” God.
1 John 2:4 “He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
John states that we are liars, if we say that we know Him but we fail to keep His commandments.
What happens to all liars?
Revelation 21:8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.
In order to know God, and to love God, and to abide in Him, we must keep His commandments.
If we say that we know God but we do not keep His commandments, then we are liars.
If we say that we love God but we do not keep His commandments, then we are liars.
If we say that we abide in Christ but we do not keep His commandments, then we are liars.
If we say that we love God, but we do not love our neighbor, then we do not love God and we are liars.
All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone.
Matthew 19:17 “if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
This is not a suggestion; Jesus states that you must obey the commandments if you want to enter eternal life.
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power”
It is mandatory to obey God’s commandments (the gospel of Jesus Christ) in order to inherit eternal life. If we do not obey them, then we will be punished with everlasting destruction.
1 John 3:6 “Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.”
