What does it take to become a Jesuit?

A friend of mine enrolled and is an ordained Jesuit priest.

Apart from having the necessary spiritual qualities, it is my impression that anyone considering enrolling with the Jesuits should be aware that they need to be a very good scholar with an ability to study hard and to assimilate and memorise a lot of data.

Intellectual rigour is a pre-requisite for becoming a Jesuit.
 
But, its not just for the religious clerics ? The laity also welcomed too ?
 
Ten years of formation before ordination as a priest. In other words, about the same amount of time it takes to become a neurosurgeon.

Attend a seminary run by these orders…and get ordained through these orders.

So, what degree is needed ? Only for males right ? Talking Jesuits …but, maybe same applies to Franciscans.

The Jesuits are a religious order. When you take your final vows you will be a religious.

Ha !! Well … so much for the laity participating !!

So, what’s other viable options …the Knights of Columbus ?
 
Or, what about the Deaconate equivalent…in the Jesuit order, for the laity ?
 
Any layman can become a Franciscan - by joining the OFS - Order of Franciscans Secular.

I was already investigating that before the Conclave. I’ll definitely be going ahead 🙂

Ok …very interesting !!
But, same doesn’t apply to Jesuits…no Secular Order of Jesuits for the laity ?

Hello, my neighbor! No, there are no honorary memberships that I’m aware of, but if you are looking to join a lay apostolic organization I heartily recommend the Legion of Mary. We are very active in the greater New Orleans area.🙂

If you are interested in becoming a Jesuit, but don’t want to go through the ~13 years of formation to become a priest then you can join as a brother. You would still be taking vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and particular obedience to the pope.

As far as I’ve ever been able to find there is no third order secular Jesuits. You can still practice Ignatian spirituality.

You could join one of the many organizations the Jesuits are in partnership with.

The closest thing to a lay community steeped in Jesuit Tradition and Ignatian Spirituality is to join the Christian Life Communiy which was then known as the Sodality of Mary. It’s a world community/organization that is active in around the world in both the youth and the adult level.

Hey …that’s an idea …become a Jesuit Brother !! Will look into it. I’ve already got doctoral degree…just not in theology.

I think it is standard for any seminarian…Philosphy and Theology…and a lot of spiritual formation. There are additional vows too before ordination for the Franciscans. I am not sure about the Jesuits and Dominicans.
 
Excuse me for saying OP, but the decision your looking to make about the rest of your life is going to need a more serious period of discernment than you seem to be giving it. You seem to be all over the map and have little idea what you truly want to do or what God is calling you to do. You have to choose the right path, not just any path. After all, this is not like joining the local Moose Lodge!🙂

I kindly suggest a period of prayer and thought be given to such a momentous move, and then talk to a Jesuit adviser, or even a spiritual adviser who can answer your questions properly and to help you find out where you truly belong.

The standard degree(s) in philosophy and theology as for any priest, but Jesuits also “specialise” (for want of a better word") in a particular apostolic / ministry which they are expected to train / qualify in. this can be just about anything - I know a former Jesuit whose area was graphic design but there are others who work in education, science, or even law.
