Hi,
I heard that “life begins before conception” since the cells are alive. I know there wouldn’t be a soul present until the sperm and egg come together. I am just wondering how true that statement “life begins before conception” really is?

Thanks,
Brian

You would have to ask the person who said it.

that is not Catholic teaching.

The question is not when “life” begins. Life is present in any living thing, from a single cell to a large organism.

The question is rather: when does a new individual of the human species have its beginning?

^This.

Maybe it’s referring to the desired position of a woman being in good health, taking folic acid and calcium tablets, and so on, to prepare for a healthy pregnancy? Healthy babies come from healthy mothers 🙂

Thinks of Jeremiah 1:5…

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you"
My thought exactly!👍

When I was a small child, I knew that I was an idea of God and the idea of me existed long before I came into being. Therefore, I have always believed that I existed before I existed. Have I confused anyone yet? Does that make sense?

I came forth from God and now I am trying to find my way back home.

This is it. This is the only thing you should use in rebuttal. Everything else only sidesteps the real issue.

It doesn’t mean anything. Life begins at conception.

it is a theory originally thought of by suaraz and devoloped on by Dr. jerome Lejuene less than 10 years after Roe vs: wade was passed.

Well my friend is a doctor and was making some sort of point the cells are living. I guess when Catholics say life BEGINS AT CONCEPTION, they are talking about human life with soul and body, not simply livings cells…

I am just trying to figure out how to respond to him. My friend is Muslim and I think they are against abortion for the most part, with exceptions.

Bacteria are living.
Plants are living.
Lobsters are living.
Apes are living.
All human cells are living.
A sperm is living.
An unfertilized egg is living.

None of the above have a soul.

Only humans have a soul.
Humans receive their souls at conception.

Actually, I think that St. Thomas Aquinas says that plants, animals, humans, all have souls, just different. I think to be living, animate, means to have a soul… I think in scripture it says only humans and animals have souls, specifically in the Septuagint. I am not expert on this, but just recalling some of the things that I have read.

I just saw this link gratiaetnatura.wordpress.com/category/st-thomas-aquinas/

Sorry, for digressing, but thought I would share my thoughts. I agree, we get souls at conception. So I just answered my friend simply, “We are talking about human life; soul and body.”

God Bless You!

It means that after conception there’s no logical point in development where we can say, ‘now the embryo or fetus Is not human-and now it is; now it doesn’t deserve to have its rights protected by law-but now it does’. So any determinations made to end life from conception on is to play God.

Certain Jews believe that rock have souls, along with every object.

I love that ❤️

Human life begins at conception: when the sperm cell fertilizes the egg. Yes, the cells were “alive” before conception but at the point of conception, a new human is created and the soul is infused in the body.

Yeah I think I heard this before too. Animals, plants, etc, have mortal souls.
Humans have **immortal **souls. Our immortal souls are what distinguish us from all other mortal life.
