A very wise and beloved priest once told me that people often get so focused on Jesus as the example of Man that is divine, that they lose sight of the fact that He is also a Human that is God (I know that may sound like the same thing, but it really isn’t.) We have the Divinity of Man and the Humanity of God all in one in the person of Jesus. (I know I’m not expressing this as elegantly as the priest did, and I apologize.)
I think that is perhaps what is missing here. Jesus is God. He is also a Man. Jesus lived on this earth and was the perfect example of the Humanity of God.
Mary is the Mother of God ~ the human man Jesus, who is both God and Man.
No doubt Jesus honors his mother, just as any son would honor his mother, so to demean Mary in any way, including denying her role as the Mother of God, probably doesn’t get you any points with Jesus. To deny that Mary is the mother of God is to say that Jesus was not divine. I don’t think most Christians really want to go there…
