Hi. I’ve got a lot of family and friends against mixed race marriages, specifically races that are a visibly different color. They say that it’s because (1) they wouldn’t want to put their children in a kind of “I don’t know where I belong” state of mind, (2) they want their children to “look like them”, and (3) who would purposefully put their children in a position where they will struggle with society to be accepted?

I was wondering what the Catholic Church says about mixed-race marriages, because I feel that it’s important to embrace ALL ethnicities… I mean, Jesus didn’t just die for the European race.

How can I respond to this kind of prejudice?

Thanks.

Hi,

You just responded nicely: Jesus didn’t just die for Europeans.
It’s only because of people like your family that mixed race people experience difficulties. The Church is open to all races and welcomes them to all the sacraments, including Matrimony. Marriage is a vocation and it appears that the Lord has indeed called people from different races to marry each other.
