What does the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written" mean?

Faith with out works is dead! as in dead. It is not faith at all, or it would have works associated with it. It is grace, faith, & works which save.

In **Ephesians 2:8 ** You miss understand the object of the sentence. if you were to diagram it, then you would know what it is saying. GRACE IS THE OBJECT OF THE SENTENCE. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this (grace) is not of you; it (grace) is the gift of God; it (grace) is not from works, so no one may boast.

We are saved by obeying the 10 commandments! That’s deffinitely work! ha Mathew 19:16…“Teacher what must I do to gain eternal life?..If you wish to enter into eternal life, keep the commandments.”

"Do for the least of these… Mathew 25:41-46 We must care for those in need to be saved.

We must avoid serious sin, “I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” Gal 5:19-21

We must repent, and be baptized to be saved. Peter {said} to them, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

We must confess our sins, Jesus said to them…“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” John 20:21-23 For nothing unclean will enter Heaven.

We must persevere to be saved, “…but whoever endures to the end will be saved.” Mathew 10:22

Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” Are you saved if you do not have life within you? No. We must receive the Eucharist to be saved. John 6:53

There are more also. We are definitely Not saved by faith alone. It is miracle enough that we can be saved at all. What a good and glorious God we have!

Faith without works IS dead… But James didn’t say that we are SAVED by works. James said we are JUSTIFIED by works. Salvation isn’t the same as justification. Webster: Justify = proved. We are saved by the type of faith that produces works.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, NOT THE RESULT OF WORKS” Eph 2:8,9

“he saved us, NOT BECAUSE OF ANY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS that we had done,” Titus 3:5

These passages expressly state that we are not saved by works. Ephesians 2:8 EXPRESSLY STATES that we are saved by grace, through faith.

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved,” Acts 16:30-31

This verse expressly states how to be saved.

Yes, if one keeps the commandments he will be saved. But Christ did not say we are saved BY keeping the commandments. One cannot do works that please God without faith. “And without faith it is impossible to please him (God). Hebrews 11:6
So, if works are done which please God, they arose out of faith. It was the faith that saved, not the works… as Paul explicitly states that salvation is NOT THE RESULT OF WORKS in Ephesians and Titus as quoted above. Keeping the commandments is the proof that we know God. “Now by this we may be sure that we know him, if we obey his commandments. 1 John 2:3

One “retains” what was in one’s possession as you cannot “retain” that which you did not possess prior to “retaining” it. If Peter “retains a sin”, the sin that was retained was Peter’s sin. If Peter forgave those who persecuted him, they would be forgiven (by Peter). If Peter did not forgive, then sin remains in Peter because he did not forgive. The passage did not say that Christians must confess their sins to Peter in order to receive God’s forgiveness.

One could say, “The Johnny forgave Sally for stealing his toy. Sally was forgiven.” Johnny forgave Sally’s sin against Johnny. It’s just that simple.

The same Holy Spirit that Peter received, I also received. He came into me on the darkest of nights. After a series of tragedies, I could not continue on my own. I had come to the edge. I said “Lord, I cannot carry the burden. You must carry it.” In that moment, I had put my faith in Him and He filled me. I felt like I was floating. A light appeared in the room. I gazed at it for minutes or hours, I do not know. What I did know was that… while I had not intended to become a Christian, that is what I had become. For three days I was “in the spirit”.

I am His. I belong to Him. He is in me and I in Him. We are one… for more than forty years.

When one confesses their sins to God, through a Priest, God takes posession of their sins! When Jesus said, “As the Father sent me, so I send you.” He gave them a mission, and whom God sends he equips! Jesus, Breathed on them, and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Who’s sins you forgive are forgiven them!” Jesus came to the Apostles, after His death, specificly to give them this mission to forgive sins with, HIS AUTHORITY. Jesus provided this way for our sins to be forgiven! In obedience to Jesus, His church has practiced this Reconciliation to God for 2000 years. For by it, we may have our sins forgiven, and repair our relationship with God. A good, and Holy act indeed.

yes brother, we are saved through faith! Only it is not by faith alone. It is faith AND works, faith AND Baptism, faith AND obedience to the ten commandments. "Teacher what must I do to GAIN eternal life? To gain something presupposes you do not already posses it. If he does not have eternal life…he is not saved. Jesus said, “If you wish to enter into eternal life, keep the commandments” By keeping the commandments we enter into eternal life. We are “saved” from eternal death.

To the other point which you made. Actually St. Paul states that GRACE is not an act of works. As always, I turn to the Catholic Church, which first lived the New Testament, then wrote it down, assembled the Bible, and gave it to the world. I turn to the Church to which Jesus Christ entrusted the Sacred Writings, to teach what they mean. After all the Church walked with Jesus, and understood His intentions, and meaning better than modern man. The Church LIVED the Traditions and teachings of Jesus for 300 years before there was a Bible.

Another consideration is John 6:53 Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.” Are you saved if you have not life within you? No. Eight times here in John Jesus repeats this teaching, which the Catholic Church calls Eucharist. As Jews the Apostles understood that the sacrifice for their sins offered to God the Father was not complete, until they ate of the meat which was sacrificed. So too, our acceptance of Jesus’ sacrifice, of His death on the cross for our salvation, is not complete, until we consume that which was sacrificed. the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Please consider this invitation of Jesus to come to him in the Eucharist.
