What goes through your head when the priest elevates that Host

and that chalice? What emotions circulate through your mind?
What a GREAT idea for a thread, callmeChris! Such beautiful responses from everyone! :heaven:
In general I am struck on two levels. Firstly at the elevation I am reminded to lift up all who have asked for my prayers, my family, friends, those in difficult situations etc, Secondly, at the precise moment of the elevation I bow my head and pray with my heart (my Lord and my God) because at that moment more than any other I am aware of my own nothingness before God almighty and my awareness that in a short time I am asking God into my heart, my life in communion. That is the big WOW of my day.
This is pretty close to my response. At the Elevation of the Host and the Chalice, I always feel that the floodgates of mercy are opening up, and so I pray fervently for those I know who are in greatest need of mercy.

Since I am unable to receive communion myself (not a member of the Church yet), I pray that Our Lord will grant the grace of Spiritual Communion to all of us present who are not able to receive for whatever reason.

I also open my heart and pour out my meager devotion … nowhere near as much as He deserves, but all I have to give.

I used to be Catholic and the nuns taught us to bow our heads at the Elevation. But the more I matured, the more I gazed directly at the Host. After all, if Jesus was paying me an in-person, bodily call, would I turn away from him in any way, even to bow? I mean, here’s Jesus in the very flesh, but whatever you do, don’t look at him? Doesn’t make much sense to me, although I’m not dissing those who do bow out of love, respect, awe or whatever. But if my Lord walked into the room, you better believe I’d look at him. So when I believed he personally appeared at the Consecration and then was displayed at the Elevation, sure, I looked. And isn’t one chief function of the Elevation to look? To “behold” the Lamb of God? Can’t do much “beholding” with eyes averted.

My head and heart are pierced by Faith that God Jesus True God and True Man is present on the alter at that moment.

In a flash my entire faith journey passes through me, from the beginning when Our Father gifted me with Faith, and reading in Faith Our Lord who said ‘Before Abraham was, I Am’, ‘This is my Body’, Eternally begotten, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, every statement Our Lord made in relation to His Divinity.

And in that single moment I gather all my life in faith journey to meet together again in this Holy Holy Holy moment when God becomes Incarnate in This Body.

God on the altar. God the creator of all. God our Paschal Lamb. God God God.

And when Mass has ended I remain behind alone and Worship Our Lord in me. Worshiping God. Just worshiping Jesus. Jesus. God in me. Sacred moment. Holy moment.

Who, for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven.

This mystery, the Incarnation is the center of our Christian life. Traditionally the priest genuflected saying this words.

This mystery, the Incarnation is repeated by the consecration, Christ comes in every mass, to be with us.

When that holy essence is raised above my head, a flash of images always comes to me. Most important of all, the host of angels and saints I have tried to envision all throughout the Mass begin to bow down. Here is Saint Thomas, falling down in adoration; there is Saint Dominic, prostrate before the Holy One, and over in yonder corner is St. Francis, praising God with arms raised high. At the moment of elevation, I feel most at home with our brothers and sisters the saints.

The Holy Mass is the eternal, timeless observance of Calvary. Look at the elevated Christ, lifted up for our redemption, delivered up to death for the love of each human soul. Within that simple accidental bread is contained the substance of glory, majesty, and perfection itself. I can see the glorious chorus of apostles, the praiseworthy company of the prophets, and the white-robed army of martyrs in that bread, as if a mirror of Heaven. He is there, forever advocating for us to our beloved Father, extracting mercy from our Judge. Look at the regiments, divisions, squadrons, and whole armies which humble themselves before the Blessed Trinity!

“Finally, only another 15 min. and I can get out of here”. 😃

Just kidding sort of, but that was my response until I left the Church about 35 years ago.

Fast forward to now (I am a revert, came back to the Church 13 years ago). My thoughts are very simple: “My Lord and my God”.

I normally pray, “My Lord and my God, have mercy on my soul.” Sometimes it varies to, “My Lord and my God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Whichever way I am moved, that is what feel and pray.

A moment of wondrous Awe in the Presence of God Creator of all.

Oh my God you are truly here, your power is greater that all the suns and stars in the universe combined and you are there on the altar at this very moment.

You are no less present on the alter than you are present to all in Heaven.

I occasionally wonder if my fellow church members and the Priest are aware that God is up there at this very moment. I do not want anyone to feel flat or unexcited in Your Presence Lord.

I never want to ever lose that wondrous Awe I have Lord when you are present on the altar. I never want to ever feel unexcited and flat and ho hum just another day in church.

Never let me be anything less that Awed by Your Holy Holy Holy presence each and every single moment you come to us in Your Body.

When I touch Your Body I touch God One in Union with the Father and Holy Spirit.

I believe You Lord because You say it is so. You are the Word, and through You all things were made.

Jesus You are humble, You chose to be born poor, and You choose to share yourself with us in Your Body. How Great You are that You are so humble, and that You choose to feed us with Yourself.

And when I have to leave You and return to the world, I wish I did not have to and that I could stay worshiping You in Your Body.

Usually, ‘My Lord and my God!’ but sometimes ‘Lord, I am not worthy to receive You, but only say the word and I shall be healed’ which is what I repeat on the way to Communion.

With a bowed head, I say to myself “Lord, I am not willing to receive you, but only say the words and I shall be healed and if it be your will ******** and ********* as well”.

Both of my children are away from the Church now as young adults. I pray for them a minimum of once a day, and especially at the elevation.
