Hi,
ATM I’m reading Lawler’s excellent book “The Faithful Departed” (2008), but there is one point where I don’t have the [American Catholic] cultural knowledge to understand his allusion:
He writes (p.34)
“(Pope Leo XIII would condemn the excesses of Americanism in his encyclical Testem Benevolentiae of 1899. In one of the history’s little ironies, the papal document denying that America has a privileged moral status was formally promulgated on January 22: a date that holds a grim meaning for active Catholic Americans today.)”

What happened on Jan 22 [year unknown]?

Every help ist appreciated.

January 22, 1973, Roe v Wade, making abortion legal in the U.S.

Yep,the day that child sacrifice was legalized in the USA.

Does anyone realize that this barbaric practice is a hallmark of a declining civilization? God bless the poor holy innocents.
