Hello, can anyone tell me what happened to Joseph? I know he was with Mary at Jesus’ birth, I know he was there when Jesus was found at the Temple, but what happened to him when Jesus began His ministry? I read that after the Crucifixion Mary went to live with her relatives. Just very curious. Thanks.

As many biblical scholars think that Joseph was older than Mary, it is probable that he died before the Crucifixion.

It is believed that St Joseph died before Jesus began His Ministry

It appears that none of the Apostles or Gospel/Epistle writers knew him. He occupies a very unique and unusual place in salvation history. He received his instructions directly from God via an angel in dreams. Several times.

The ‘older man’ part comes in from the prophecy of Joel (2:28) who prophesied that:
"And it shall come to pass after this, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy: your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.
Since all revelation came to him via dreams, it is believed that he was an older man. This also correlates well with Mary’s wonder about conceiving (Luke 1), even though she knew that it came through knowledge of man. Her words make it clear that she expected no children/relations with Joseph.

In the explanation about the Holy Cloak novena in honour of St Joseph it says it is to be recited for thirty consecutive days in memory of the 30 years St.Joseph spent in the company of Jesus Christ,Son of God.

  1. It came to pass thereafter, when he returned to his own house in the city of Nazareth, that he was seized by disease, and had to keep his bed. And it was at this time that he died, according to the destiny of all mankind. For this disease was very heavy upon him, and he had never been ill, as he now was, from the day of his birth. And thus assuredly it pleased Christ to order the destiny of righteous Joseph. He lived forty years unmarried; thereafter his wife remained under his care forty-nine years, and then died. And a year after her death, my mother, the blessed Mary, was entrusted to him by the priests, that he should keep her until the time of her marriage. She spent two years in his house; and in the third year of her stay with Joseph, in the fifteenth year of her age, she brought me forth on earth by a mystery which no creature can penetrate or understand, except myself, and my Father and the Holy Spirit, constituting one essence with myself.- History of Joseph the Carpenter

Some of the visionaries have said that St. Joseph lived until Jesus was 21 yrs. old. Then Jesus took over as Protector of the Virgin Mary. It is an old tradition in the Church that Joseph was surrounded by Jesus and the Virgin Mary at his death, which is why he is the patron of a happy death.
