The Boy Scouts are routinely attacked for standing by traditional standards of moral character, like faith in God and respect for the institution of the family. In the politically correct corners of America, wearing a Boy Scout uniform is like wearing a Nazi brown shirt.

In a recent column for the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, Rick Mercier criticized President Bush for having visited last month’s patriotic Boy Scout Jamboree. “Isn’t there something nightmarish about our misleader swooping down on a steaming pit of sweat and testosterone and whipping a throng of brown-shirted youths into a nationalistic frenzy?” he asks . . . As an Eagle Scout I’ve always kinda wondered the same thing…what did happen to them?

For those of us willing to try to take them back, we get involved in Girl Scouts and call them on stuff like this, make our voices heard. We make darn sure troops sponsored by our parishes do NOT pariticpate in such activities (We don’t even celebrate Scout Week if it falls in Lent). It may seem an uphill battle, but Girls Scouts has changed for the better even in the past 15-20 years of so. The organization was MUCH more to the “left” and outwardly supported ecology at all costs, abortion, etc. Gee, their membership dropped. Somebody caught on, and noticed the Boy Scouts had plenty of boys. Things have toned down, but this sort of thing crops up and it’s time to make views known again.

For those who can’t do that, there are other strictly girls’ organizations.

Even for some of us who stick with the Girl Scouts, there is little we can do. In my area, Girl Scouts is a very liberal organization. At a training course for the Girl Scouts’ new “Studio 2B” (which targets girls aged 13 through 17–formerly Cadettes and Seniors), I protested that I don’t feel I should be talking to my Girl Scouts (other people’s daughters) about date rape, incest, premarital sex, and similar. (My point was that the Scouts are minors and when these issues are discussed in school, parents are notified and have the right to opt out for their children.) In response to my protest, a council staff member told the group “But the Girl Scouts want to teach young women about OUR morality.” I was apoplectic–because I KNOW the morality of most Girl Scouts leaders is NOT my morality and NOT what I want my daughter exposed to!

This is very worrying. I don’t buy GS cookies anymore due to the negative things I’ve heard. I grew up with the GS decades ago. What can someone who isn’t associated the the GS do?

My heart weeps for the commodification of the Girl Scouts into the Liberal agenda. I remember my Girl Scout Days fondly, but sadly, these days it seems as though the Girl Scouts are now just a training ground for radical feminism. It is my hope that those of you are mothers of daughters can take back the Girl Scouts and return them to the values handed down to us from our founder Julia Ward Howe. What would she think? She probably would not recognize her organization which is now worshipping at the Baal altar of political correctness :crying:

First and foremost, let council and national officials KNOW why you aren’t buying the cookies. Write them. Email them. Call them. But make sure they know it isn’t because you have lost your taste for thin mints, just thin morality.

Second, make people aware of the situation in your local area, especially your parish.

Third, when you DO hear of scouts doing it right (Scout Sunday, religious awards such as I Live My Faith and Marian), also let council and national know how pleased you were to see good Catholic values being appreciated.

And there IS an option for a formal Cadette and Senior troop over Studio 2B, just as there is an option for a junior troop over individualized Juliettes. Our pairsh does not use Studio 2B for that very reason.

Of course, I stay with the Daisies. They’re little, their program time is short, they can’t reallly go anyplace, and they don’t sell.😃

My son is a Cub Scout and my daughter is a Brownie. I think it is a pity that anybody–right or left–has to politicize the fact that children belong to either of these fine organizations.

I am a den leader for the Cub Scouts, and believe me, we don’t talk about homosexuality–neither does my daughter’s Brownie troop. We do projects, go camping, say the pledge, work on badges, etc. It is a pity that anybody will keep their daughter or son out of Scouts because of politics!!

you need to look at the GS cookie box to see who bakes or distributes them, then call that company to see if the same or similar cookie is marketed in grocery store brands, which some including thin mints are, by some of the bakers.

I was Golden Trefoil (lifetime member of Girl Scouting) but resigned and turned in my badge when they started supporting PP and working in partnership with PP. DD heads a troop whose sponsor is a Catholic Church, which I have discussed with her and the pastor, they are on the verge of disassociating, although their local council has disavowed many of the programs pushed by national.

how many threads do we have on the same topic? quite confusing, I have a lot to say but don’t want to repeat myself so I will bow out.

There are also Junior Catholic Daughters of America, and a couple other organizations that have been founded with girls in mind.

I’m sorry, but Girl Scouts in the US was founded by Juliette Lowe, or “Daisy” as she was known. Julia Ward Howe wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic and was dead before Girl Scouts was founded.

I knew it had a name. AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS!!! Their uniforms look a lot like old Camp Fire Girl uniforms (before they went liberal and added boys), and they are founded on Christian principles.

Problem: How to get them in our diocese. According to my count, there are 181 AHG troops, and a whopping 11, or 6% only, are sponsored by Catholic parishes.

I think somebody opened a couple threads on the same thing. One of them needs to be closed.

Well, I have avoided Girl Scouts with my daughter since she was in Kindergarten simply because I was not impressed with the leaders at her school. One of them was my neighbor so I knew her all too well. We are a homeschool family and I was considering trying to get her in a Girl Scout Troop at our Catholic Elem. school.

Thanks for the heads up. I now know I will focus on something more worth our time and effort. I will certainly not allow my child to wear a uniform that represents this kind of political agenda!

Why not invest our family’s time in something more worth while?

I do plan for my son to be in Boy Scouts. My husband is an Eagle Scout.

I was a girl scout and from my experience, the Boy Scouts have alot more opportunities anyway.

I will never buy another box of Girl Scout Cookies again, sorry Girls. I hate to say it!

Ummm, the founder of Girl Scouts was Juliette Gordon Low. And actually, she was quite a liberal for her day and I think Girl Scouting was pretty progressive in its early years too.

If the girl scouts have adopted a leftwing political agenda, it’s is something people should know before enrolling their daughters.
