So you’re saying a person baptised as a Catholic stops being Catholic when he disagrees with a Church teaching or sins?
I am not saying nothing, I am simply quoting words from our Religious leaders called Priests and Bishops, You argument should be directed at them.

I know a Catholic friend who is neutral on Homosexual marriages.
Well, I think your “friend” needs the top of his head lifted off, some gear oil poured in and then the brain put into gear, slowly at first, until it gets up to speed. We don’t want any gears stripped by taking it out of nuetral too quickly, do we?!

The Catholic Church is pretty clear on homosexuality, in the Catechism and in papal encyclicals, so any Catholic either has to be ‘Catholic’ on the issue, or be guilty of watering down his/her faith.

Nowtithstanding what the Church states unequivocally, there is a centuries old Natural Law argument that demonstrates that homosexual “marriage” is predicated on something that is very wrong. It has been considered to be wrong for all of human history.

Your Catholic friend just needs to do some homework.

But, gear oil first…

I don’t know what anyone else is saying but the truth is fairly simple to digest here. Marriage is not a political issue to be booted around by liberals and conservatives. Marriage is a Sacrament…just as Holy Communion and other Sacraments of the Church. This is not an issue for individual Catholics to decide whether to “believe” or not and maybe a good time to decide whether you are, or are not, a Catholic. Serious stuff…but pretty simple actually.🤷 Are you a Catholic when you stop believing in the sacraments?

Alright folks calm down… Once a person becomes Catholic baptized or undergoes confirmation through RCIA they are Catholic forever… We all know that…

You can renounce it to high heaven and join some UFO cult somewhere but you’re still Catholic and the Church would want you to come home…

Hey who says Catholics don’t have a sense of humor, this is a great post. Accurate, honest and humorous.

My friend is actually quite the engineer for a teenager! What a coincidence that you used mechanical jokes!

I managed to drag him to the Edge program at my Church when his parents didn’t have him take any education program. Now, he’s starting to open up to his faith! Keep him in your prayers.

What I really wanted answered was, is it a sin to be neutral on homosexual “marriage”?

Same thing that would allow the Church to ordain women as priests: a review and rejection of the Church’s current teaching on the nature and significance of human sexuality.
And there would have to be reasons for that. What would they be?

My guess is your friend is probably just a little cowed by the intense hostility that is unleashed when you speak out against #ssm. I am also prone to being a wimp so let us all pray for Holy Courage in this dark hour

Ok, some practical advice then. You vote against same sex marriage but agree to accept whatever the government passes as law. Are you complicit if your state allows SSM? If yes, should you start a revolt?

I’m not trying to be nasty but just trying to get you to elucidate in practical terms what you mean. Thanks.
Divorce is against Catholic moral law on marriage. However, civil law on marriage allows divorce and remarriage pretty much everywhere. I am not aware of many Catholics starting revolts against laws on divorce.

Similarly in countries where same-sex marriage, or civil unions, have been legalised. We do not see Catholics causing revolutions in the streets.

The argument is with God.

Adam and Eve. Not Ann and Eve. Nor Adam and Jim. Homosexual “marriage” is an abberation. The parts don’t fit. They can’t “be fruitful and multiply.”

Let me rephrase my question. If a Catholic is neutral on homosexual “marriages”, does he sin? My Catholic friend is neutral on Homosexual marriages.
It is impossible to be “neutral” on this issue, If I said I was “neutral” on the issue of rape I would really be supporting it. Saying neutral jsut means that the person understands that it is wrong but for some reason or another does not want to conform with the Church. The reasons could be numerous but are probably pretty common. They may be lead by a media that makes it seem like it is the “good thing” to support SSM or maybe they are struggling with the issue themselves, or maybe they know people who are gay and dont want to think they cant be happy. Your job, as an informed Catholic is to show this person WHY the Church is correct and the most Holy on this issue. I cringe a little when you say “EDGE” amke sure your program is orthodox and has good strong Cathoic leaders.

So Catholics must be opposed to homosexual “marriages” no matter what?
Here is a Church document that explains the issue.

vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/cfaith/documents/rc_con_cfaith_doc_20030731_homosexual-unions_en.html

Not long ago, voters in many states were asked to vote for or against legalization of same sex marriage. May I politely point out that there was no box to check for “neutral” or “I don’t know.”

I’m confused by your “no matter what” phrasing.

Peace,
Ed

Catholics are not encouraged to start revolts. Our primary weapons are prayer and education as to the truth. Revolutions about this issue will solve nothing. “No-Fault Divorce” made it too easy to untie the knot. The Catholic Church is certainly not promoting divorce, but, in the 1980s, I opened the newspaper to the classifieds section and saw many ads that read: “No kids? $75 and you’re out. Call 800-DIVORCE.” The other day I saw a sign that read “Quick Bankruptcy and Quick Divorce. Call …”

It took 40 years to convince some people to think this action is OK, then another and then another. Young adults today today who have not lived through this have been conditioned to accept casual sex as normal or average.

The Catholic Church is modeled after the Jesus Christ of the Gospels. It does not behave as the rest of the world does.

After failed votes for same sex marriage, I would read that gay marriage supporters simply lacked the money. Money for what? More billboards, more people getting the message out. The tactic is clear: get people to agree to one step which will be followed by another step.

Peace,
Ed

I’m not familiar enough with said teachings to be able to articulate what I think might be a weakness in them.

Which is all a fancy way of saying that I doubt the existence of any good reason to dispute the Church’s teaching on this matter 😛

If you have any, I’d be open to hearing them, I suppose 🤷

Why do you cringe when I say “EDGE”? I don’t know any other Edge programs in other parishes, but I know mine is orthodox. They even taught how to have Christian Ecumenism correctly so you don’t blur the differences between Catholicism and the other Christian religions.

I don’t think they need all that much more money when they have the support of the educational establishment, the news media, and [lest we forget] most of all the entertainment industry. All these are free advertisement. Around the time of the Stonewall riots, homosexuals said all they wanted was to be left alone. Forty plus years later, we are arguing over SS"M" and whether they should be allowed to adopt children. Not even the Abolition of slavery went that quick.
