What Happens to Non-Christians When They Die?

That’s OK. The point of view that irks me the most that is supported by SOME here is the view that favors near universalism when it comes to salvation and always couches that view in terms of the mercy of God–therefore don’t TRY to convert anyone to the fullness of Truth that consists in the Catholic faith.

I was Methodist before entering the Catholic church and for most of my 53 years up until then i really was INVINCIBLY ignorant. i really didn’t know the truth of the Catholic faith.

I’m sure there were times where if I had died being invincibly ignorant I might have still gone to hell because of committing Mortal sin for there were times that i broke the ten commandments–sometimes i was repentant and other times I wasn’t.

Later on I knew the truth of the Catholic faith but didn’t do everything I could do to join the Catholic faith–I was really culpable then.

During RCIA I longed for the Eucharist and joining the Catholic faith and I repented to God the best I could until I was able to make my first confession.

i don’t know but do think that if i had died then that god would have saved me because I DESIRED the Catholic faith and was doing the best i could under the circumstances.

Now as a Catholic I know that my first battle is to avoid mortal sin–even all venial sin–the fact that I’m able to ever do anything right is because of Jesus’ grace and when I do not do the will of God it is my fault.

The one thing i never tire of telling cradle Catholics is how thankful I am for the Catholic Church and how they shoot toot the Church’s horn to the whole world so poor sinners can be saved and those who are not yet formally joined to the Catholic faith can come to the fullness of truth.

Sometimes when I’m at Mass I won’t to burst out crying for joy that God has given me the great honor of them just letting me in the building to worship Him!

Don’t get me wrong! 99% of the time i may spend interacting with non Catholics I stress the love and mercy angle and how great it is to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and how nice life is when the Triune God dwells within you.

I think that 1% of the time you might be around a potential convert and God might prod you to also speak of the CONSEQUENCES of trying to be saved without the Catholic faith IF YOU know the truth of the Catholic faith–

but of course to remove the speck from another’s eye i have to first get the logs out of my own.

The best solution to everything is to proclaim ALL the gospel–everything that Jesus taught.

If you do that you won’t be able to know which all souls make it to heaven–only god knows and judges that–but you can know and let others know what kinds of souls have a chance of heaven according to God and his word as interpreted by the Catholic Church–and those who are in danger of hell according to God’s word as interpreted by the Catholic Church.

God only calls us to plant the seed and sometimes to nurture it and harvest it–but only the Lord will separate the wheat from the chaffe and the sheep from the goats.

The best way to humility is to proclaim God’s truth–if you do you can’t help but pray as we always do in Mass–“Lamb of God have mercy on us”!

The kingdom of heaven is open to all people of all religions. Catholics have the fullness of the Truth, and therefore have a greater responsibility in trying to live it to the best of their ability…and yes its HARD work. Its going to come down to how much love you had (while living) for GOD and your fellow man and not totally dependent on whether or not you were Catholic. We (Catholics) are supposed to be the laborers! Prayer, fasting, evangelization, good works, etc. in order to gain more laborers for Christ. But to assume that only the best Catholics make it to heaven I think for 1) heaven will be very sparsely populated and 2) this does not put Christs mercy in a proper light.

Forgive me for not knowing chapter and verse but from the book of revalation: “Oh how I wish you were either hot or cold…but because you are lukewarm I will vomit you from my mouth”

The above paraphrased quoted verse I take to mean that there IS salavtion for those of us that are “cold” otherwise Christ would not wish we were that way, would he? By “cold” I am assuming people of other religions and faiths who lived their lives with love and honesty but did not convert to a Christian religion. Only GOD knows our hearts.

Think about this contextually. In those days, to have hot water you had to collect wood burn it and get the fire hot enough to heat the water. To have cold water you would have had to get the water from the well/stream/river and drink it relatively soon before it got warm.

The idea is that you have to work to get to a hot or cold state. Stagnant water is lukewarm. God does not want us to be lukewarm.

Faith in Jesus is absolutely necessary for salvation. From the CCC:

[161](javascript:openWindow(‘cr/161.htm’)😉 Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for obtaining that salvation.42 "Since “without faith it is impossible to please [God]” and to attain to the fellowship of his sons, therefore without faith no one has ever attained justification, nor will anyone obtain eternal life ‘But he who endures to the end.’"43

That being said, we also acknowledge that God may bring the iinculpably ignorant to this saving faith in a way known only to Him. For these reasons, we should work to evangelize all we can and encourage all to know, love, and serve Christ in His Church, but we should also not despair of anyone’s salvation who apparently dies without faith, since we do not see all that is in a person’s heart, especially in the last moments of life.

Bl. John Paul II summed this up in this allocution (the whole thing is a good read on this topic, and it is not too long):
Pope. Bl. John Paul II:
We must acknowledge that, as far as human beings can know and foresee, this practical impossibility [for many people to have access to the Gospel message] would seem destined to last a long time, perhaps until the work of evangelization is finally completed. Jesus himself warned that only the Father knows “the exact time” set by him for the establishment of his kingdom in the world (cf. Acts 1:7).

What I have said above, however, does not justify the relativistic position of those who maintain that a way of salvation can be found in any religion, even independently of faith in Christ the Redeemer, and that interreligious dialogue must be based on this ambiguous idea. That solution to the problem of the salvation of those who do not profess the Christian creed is not in conformity with the Gospel. Rather, we must maintain that the way of salvation always passes through Christ, and therefore the Church and her missionaries have the task of making him known and loved in every time, place and culture. Apart from Christ “there is no salvation.” As Peter proclaimed before the Sanhedrin at the very start of the apostolic preaching: “There is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved” (Acts 4:12).

For those too who through no fault of their own do not know Christ and are not recognized as Christians, the divine plan has provided a way of salvation. As we read in the Council’s Decree Ad Gentes, we believe that “God in ways known to himself can lead those inculpably ignorant of the Gospel” to the faith necessary for salvation (AG 7). Certainly, the condition “inculpably ignorant” cannot be verified nor weighed by human evaluation, but must be left to the divine judgment alone.

I think it would have been wiser to send her to her Jewish friend. Her Jewish friend would have explained that there is only one God and that He is the God of all and that we are all His children. The Jewish friend would have explained the message of the book of Yonah (Jonah) where we learn that redemption is open to all and is not limited to Jews or to the geography of Israel and we see a pagan city redeemed. The Jewish friend would have explained that God judges all of us by our behaviour and that it is easier for the Gentile than for the Jew to get into the World to Come as the Gentile has only to follow the seven Noahide commandments. The Jewish friend would have explained why she finds it offensive to believe that the six million Jewish victims of the Shoah went to Hell, while Hitler, if he was truly repentant and accepted the Christian leader into his heart, may be in heaven. Think about it. Maybe you’ll get a second chance.
chosen people, from your answer, I’m guessing you believe good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell. Is that correct?

Why did Jesus have to come and die?

That helps a lot! But those Jews that I know, who are aware of what the Church teaches, and despite the fact that they are exemplary people and good and holy in most ways, will still burn in the fires of hell. That is so depressing 😦
Sin and sinners have to be viewed from God’s perspective. Afterall, it is God who judges.

Consider the situation in John 8 when Jesus tells the Pharisees (very “law abiding” Jews who did not believe Jesus was the Messiah):

42 "Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. 43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.”

48 The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” 49 Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” 52 The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ 55 But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

These “exemplary” Jewish people you know (and I know too), don’t love, know, or want Jesus. Their pride and unbelief will never honor or bring glory to God. We can pray for God to change their unbelief to belief. It will be a work of God. As the old saying goes, “if there’s breath, there’s hope.”

And regarding second chances - not that I’ve ever seen in the Bible. See Luke 16:19-31 and the impassible chasm.

Well actually the Sadducees and not the Pharisees were the ones who were the sticklers to the literal meaning of the law, held the High Priesthood and were in tight with the Romans.

As for the connection between Jews and the devil, you now understand the necessity of Jews keeping their heads covered in order to hide their horns.

Indeed, without understanding the love, inspiration and meaning of the words above, which refer to “the Jews” as the children of the devil, as a people rejected by God, as murderers, as deceitful, and as liars, we cannot hope to even begin to understand Deggendorf 1337 (1338) and its aftermath.

Your comment caused me to review several online articles about the Pharisees and Sadducees (Catholic Encyclopedia, Wikipedia, Theopedia) - Pharisees appear to be teachers of the law and strict observers. For the most part they rejected the works of Jesus with a few exceptions (Nicodemus, John 3, probably Joseph of Arimathea, John 19, and of course the Apostle Paul was a devout Pharisee). The point is that they did not attribute the clear messianic works of Jesus to the truth that Jesus was the Christ. So Jesus explicitly states they do not know the truth and as such they really follow the father of lies.

“Jews keeping their heads covered in order to hide their horns” - hadn’t heard that one!

I was unaware of “Deggendorf 1337 (1338) and its aftermath” until I read your referenced article. Wow! I don’t think for one moment that these cruel murderers were Christians heading for heaven. To think that they were able to do that and at the same time “have the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16) with guidance from the Holy Spirit is non sequitur. More likely, they professed Christianity without actually being Christian (Matthew 7:21-23).

Do you think they were true Christians?

From the content of your posts it appears that your are not familiar with the fundamental concepts of Judaism. While Christians often speak of “Judeo-Christian” ethics and morality, many Christians mistakenly believe that Christianity is merely “Judaism with Jesus”

The basic central essence of Judaism is the fundamental responsibility that each and everyone of us has toward all others. Each and everyone of us has his part to play in the scheme of the world. Therefore the loss of one life is as the loss of a whole world. Sanctity of life is an overriding principle that with the exceptions of idolatry, incest or murder takes precedence over any and all commandments.

These concepts can be seen in the Torah Leviticus 19:16 - 18

"…You shall not stand by [the shedding of] your fellow’s blood. I am the Lord.

“You shall not hate your brother in your heart…”.

“You shall neither take revenge from nor bear a grudge against the members of your people; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord.”

In Judaism we are concerned about how we live our lives on this earth, we are concerned about our relationship to God and to our fellow man about how we can make this world a better place.

This is Judaism:

As a monotheistic religion we of course have no concept of a devil independent and equal in power to the one and only God, we have no concept of God sending people to eternal torture under the tutelage of this pagan figure in his special kingdom called hell. We do have a concept somewhat similar to the Christian concept of purgatory where for a limited time a soul is prepared. We do have a concept of the World to Come, but such a concept does not change the centrality and purpose of our life here on earth.

A good example of the fundamental conceptual differences between Judaism and Christianity is the recurring thread on this forum about the case of lying to a Nazi in order to not reveal where Jews are being hidden.

In Judaism, the sin, the most immoral thing possible, would be to not lie to the Nazi and not to protect the lives of those in hiding. The person not lying and revealing the hiding place, knowing full well what the Nazi will do, bears responsibility for their deaths. That is the person who almost certainly endangers any chance of getting to the world to come.

These principles are the antithesis to Hellenistic Christianity. To the Christian, the ultimate goal of life here on earth is to get eternal life in the World to Come (to what they view as heaven). It is the responsibility and the concern of the individual to live his/her life in a way that will allow this to happen. If the Christian lies to the Nazi about where the Jews are hiding than he/she has sinned. The sin endangers or may prevent the goal of the individual being granted eternal life. The Christian is not responsible for the actions of the Nazi who will take the Jews out and kill them. He/she has no wish for that to happen. Therefore the Christian must tell the truth and reveal their hiding place. At the very least he/she must repent their “sin” if he/she deceives the Nazi.

Thank you for that reference. As a catechism, I absolutely want to teach what the church teaches. I guess in my heart I just wish everyone got a second chance :-(. But next time before responding to a student, I’ll check the Catechism first.
You have to be kidding here?? your going to teach these children if they are not christian they are going to hell? you should be ashamed of yourself…

That helps a lot! But those Jews that I know, who are aware of what the Church teaches, and despite the fact that they are exemplary people and good and holy in most ways, will still burn in the fires of hell. That is so depressing 😦
Lol this is a joke right? Do u really believe this or are you being sarcastic? i dont know, alot of loonies out there…yes the all forgiving god is going to make u burn in hell, lol can you believe some people actually believe that?

Probably best to pass on what the Catechism teaches. Try CCC paragraphs 1020 thru 1065 about Judgement and paragraphs 839-840 about Jews and Salvation.

Not what the Church teaches. There are probably many (better contextually) places to read, but I just read this last night:

“There is no repentance for men after death.” CCC paragraph 393
another example of contradictions in the bible…amazing people today still take this literally. at a time when humans were so itellectually immature…

I am so happy I joined this forum tonight! Now I know what to tell my students in regard to this question 🙂
sorry but you have no right to teach anybody anything…your just blindly believing what others on here are telling you… dont you have your own brain and common sense?

how is a single offense of refusing to investigate God result in damnation? Is that blasphemy? Or is that a person thinking that he has voices in his head?

I think one would have to KNOW that the HS commanded/prompted something and then knowingly ignored the HS to commit blasphemy.
God is the author? REALLY? God actually wrote those words and dropped it from heaven…lol wow

If a SINGLE offense of refusing to investigate when the Holy Spirit prompts investigation is a MORTAL SIN–then if that SINGLE sin is unrepented of until death then yes–a SINGLE OFFENSE will result in damnation.

Notice I did say IF it was a mortal sin.

Only God knows our hearts and can perfectly judge whether we committ a mortal sin or not.

EVERY single decision we make in life has consequences.

You can’t claim to be invincibly ignorant and then pick and choose when you decide to question or not question matters of faith.

A person can be CULPABLE for not trying to loving the Lord with his whole mind.

I’m not saying that no one is invincibly ignorant or that a person doesn’t have to KNOW that the Holy Spirit is prompting him to investigate further matters of faith and refuse that prompting to committ a mortal sin.

What I’m saying is that that does indeed happen!

There are many people who have never been part of the Catholic faith or any faith that feel promptings in their heart and REFUSE to heed them because they are comfortable–they don’t want their hardened hearts to be troubled with the truth.

How often does that happen? I don’t know but that doesn’t mean that God doesn’t know.

There is such a thing as invincible ignorance–all I’m saying is that it happens much less than many people think it does.

People don’t want to face a hard truth like that–many would rather feel warm and fuzzy thinking to themselves that there are many who are invincibly ignorant and isn’t it a great thing that they are and that they get to heaven even though they don’t know the Catholic faith!

Well that is a good thing if that is indeed true and they do make it to Heaven–it is a TERRIBLE thing if they aren’t quite invincibly ignorant and wind up going to Hell not only because of their own actions but because we as Catholics are too lazy to share with them the “Fullness of Truth” because we mistakenly think that they would be better off BEING invincibly ignorant!

I’m a convert–I joined the Catholic faith at age 53.

For many of those years I didn’t have a Catholic share the Catholic faith with me.

If I had died and gone to Hell because of not embracing the Catholic faith years before I would only have myself to blame because I would not have tried to love the Lord with all my mind like Jesus commanded me to do.

I’m not making excuses–I believe for some of those years that I would have gone to Hell because of my own actions–I don’t believe I would have been INVINCIBLY ignorant–I believe I would have been mostly ignorant–but still CULPABLE.

We need to always pray for the CULPABLE out there who though they haven’t heard the Fullness of Truth that is the Catholic faith–still know enough that they WILL be judged for what they do know!

In other words there is no excuse for Catholics to NOT evangelize for the simple reason that we never know WHO knows enough to be judged and who really is invincibly ignorant!

If we truly LOVE our non Catholic brothers and sisters who do not have the “fullness of truth” how can we NOT evangelize? How can we take chances with their souls?

Now I’m sure in the grand scheme of things that God knows who will and will not make it to Heaven–no one gets an unfair deal.

But I’m also sure that if we fail to acknowledge Jesus He will fail to acknowledge us when it comes judgement time–He said so!

We as Catholics know that SOME are invincibly ignorant and that God is merciful and will save them–KNOWING that in no way lessens our responsibility in evangelism.

And if a child right before first communion can confess a mortal sin to a priest–don’t tell me that is is extremely rare and impossible to commit a mortal sin or that you have to have KNOWLEDGE equivalent to Einstein or a PhD in morality or ethics OR that you have to not only have that kind of knowledge but also have to say to yourself in front of the whole world–I know what I’m doing is CERTIFIABLY a mortal sins and I CHOOSE to do it anyway!

That amount of knowledge isn’t required–if a little child can do it–all of us can do it!

Committing a mortal sin does not require canon lawyers and sworn affadavits. ANYONE can commit mortal sin–even all those people around the world who have never heard of Jesus or the Catholic faith.

God can indeed save those people without the sacraments but if they are UNREPENTANT until death --it doesn’t matter how little they know–if they commit MORTAL sin and aren’t sorry for it and die in that state they wind up going to Hell because they have violated the natural law which is written on ALL human hearts.

That’s the COLD hard facts that many do not want to face and that’s the reason why we must always share Christ with the whole world!

We must share the Fullness of the Catholic faith with our Protestant bretheren and let God decide which ones of them know enough and which are invincibly ignorant.

The truly invincibly ignorant will be saved by God’s mercy and those who weren’t invincibly ignorant and convert to the Catholic faith will thank us in Heaven for sharing the Fullness of Truth with them!
i guess your mind starting going at 53…

just adding my two cents:

Jesus died and descended into hell . . . hell exists outside of time . . . i believe that there, He reveals Himself and brings the righteous with Him to Heaven . . . whether the person died 5000 yrs ago or 5000 years from now

when i say that part of the creed, that’s what comes to my mind . . . maybe i’m wrong in thinking that, but that’s how i understand it . . . i mean, why else would He go there?

Jesus said “I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life–no one comes to the Father except by me.”

The statement is TRUE.

Jesus said " The road to heaven is rocky and FEW there are that find it."

The statement is TRUE.

The Catholic Church teaches that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church.

The statement is TRUE.

The Catholic Church teaches that all those who die in a state of grace make it to Heaven and all those who die in a state of mortal sin enter the fires of Hell.

That statement is also TRUE.

There may be disagreement about the interpretation of these statements and disagreement as to how Jesus will implement these statements when He ultimately perfectly and justly and mercifully judges but the statements are TRUE

and it doesn’t matter who agrees with them or not and it doesn’t matter who likes them or not.

ok well some guys wrote that hundreds of years after jesus died so it MUST be true…people are so gullible…

False.

The scriptural writings in the New Testament were written within a couple decades of Christ’s death.
