What has caused confession to take a back seat?

I was on FB with a priest friend of mine and he gave me another piece of the puzzle that has enlightened me further on this topic: sometimes the priest will give a penitent penance that might take years to complete. It wouldn’t be just to withhold the grace of absolution (God’s mercy) just because of the length of time required to complete the penance. I knew there’s was something that I was missing! 🙂

Thank you all for being patient and explaining this to me. God Bless you all. 👍

Good point. 🙂

I used to go to a priest who would typically ask to offer up prayers at Mass the next time I attended. That always made me nervous because it would sometimes slip my mind by that point. :o

Yeah, this one is odd. Post-Vatican II Catholic here so confession was never stressed to me, nonetheless I’m still gonna use it. But it seems like there are no confession lines these days.
Any Saturday that I go at my parish there is always a line. The last time me and my boys went we went 15 minutes before the stated start time and we were still 6 back from the front of the line. In Portland Oregon-- possibly the most unchurched state in the Union there is a parish that has daily confessions before the 12:05 daily Mass – and I’ve always had to wait in line there also. Actually any parish in the metro area here that I’ve attempted to go to confession at–I’m always waiting in line–the challenge is to get to confess before time expires. That’s been my experience.

The peace of Christ,
Mark
