The Eucharistic ministers trying to “bless” my kids, shoot, that really drives me nuts! 😛 along with Communion in the hand, holding hands during the Our Father, the kumbaya music, etc. LOL
I know…I know. What is even more shocking is when parents tell me:

Well God will forgive me for not going this week…

Holding hands during the Our Father has to go. I don’t hold hands with dudes.

I usually sit up towards the front for any Mass I attend.

I was there one Sunday, just behind the chalice, and I saw a couple go to Communion. I can’t recall all the details, but it was obvious that she was the one who had been raised Catholic, and the guy was visiting. He took the Host, and looked at her, then walked beyond the chalice with the Host in his hand.

I got up from my kneeler and said to him (as gently as I could) ‘Please consume that, now. You need to put that IN your mouth and consume it’.

My personal take on it was that the person with the Chalice should have said something when he was walking past.

NO ONE SHOULD HOLD THE HOST IN HIS/HER HAND FOR LONGER THAN THE TIME TO GET TO THE CHALICE. At least, that’s my opinion. If people consume the Host, you won’t see it in the seats. We also have to be careful for people desecrating the Consecrated Hosts.😉
Hi Apryl,
Actually, if its a Priest or Deacon or E.M. distributing Communion, when the Eucharist is offered, the person receiving it ought to place it in his mouth right there… if he/she doesn’t it is the persons responsibility distributing the Eucharist to insist on consuming the host right there.

Some people have been known to try to place it in their pockets/ purses to bring home? Some try to intinct, which the Evangelical Lutherans do, In Catholicism only a Priest can do intinction, and distribute.

But yes if the Host has not been consumed the Priest, Deacon, E.M., ought to insist them to consume the host prior to offering the Chalice of Precious Blood.

God bless.
John

Hey Gurney,
It is not proper to do so during the Mass, The Priest holds His arms out and spiritually we are all in God’s Hands, But these protestant, Zen like rituals are creeping in. I’ve been in A Catholic Church where the whole congregation gets together, moving across the aisles to hold hands.

I think it’s okay for a Husband and wives, families to join hands, boyfriend girlfriends, to, but the Church/ or at least my Diocese frowns on the everyone holding hands.

God bless,
John

Hey Gurney,
Tell them! I don’t see enough priests doin it, I think a child who is brought up with the parent ought to be recognized in some small way, if you do not like it or appreciate it, ask them nicely not to!
The Kids get a kick out of it! I simply lay my hand gently on the head and say “God bless you and keep you.” I’m not tryin to act like a priest, but I was moved to do so.

Especially those kids that mimic mom and dad, by holding out their hands,

do i make something of myself because I do this, nope. I also go to the Hospital as an E.M Sit and read Hebrew Scriptures with the Jewish people in the room next to a Cathoiic, speak and read the Gospels with the Protestants… or just speak with someone who may need a little human contact…and so on, these days if your in a Hospital your really sick.

I’m one of those guys who really doesn’t believe I am worthy to distribute the Eucharist But the Bishop through the Parish has called me to do so.

God bless,
John

You’re funny 😛

I mean… really.

You use words like ‘obviously’ and then follow up with ‘God Bless’, but it doesn’t change that what I said was wrong.

I never said it was written in Acts. or any where else. I did say that there is nothing that says Catholics don’t tithe. You are not the magisterium. You can not interpret in the place of the magesterium

Since you seem to have a wealth of resources and since you’re the one who is correcting me and since I’m the one who asked "Who said that Catholics don’t tithe’ and since your last post didn’t answer the question that was posed…

well… you’re the ‘smart one’. 😛

Have a nice event.
Hi
Why thank you apryl,

**I guess i’m not all that smart? **I didn’t know that using ‘obviously’ in a passage and end that passage with ‘God bless You’ was a Bozo NO-No, I missed that show,
I wasn’t even a decent student in English class either,(I was too cool for english or typing! Now look at me fumbling on a keyboard!) but I have over four thousand hrs that was by 2002, of Bible study, spent some 28 months behind bars doing so… while I may not be a road Scholar ( I am a Trk driver of some 30 yrs, I do know the roads) And I am presently tackling Dante’s Divine Comedy’

feel free to correct my coma’s semi colons and run on sentences, typos well blame my spellcheck! ]

I don’t claim to know it all… I’ll spend the rest of my life learning the Bible. The good news is, knowledge of God is the only thing you get to take with you!!!

the phrase Biblical tithing was brought up and you backed it up! And that was incorrect.

I have spent ten yrs. trying to discover God outside the Catholic Church,
I have a pretty good understanding of several faiths, and what they say we teach, and what we teach because I looked them up, one by one.
Code:
The Protestants state a lot of false teachings by the Catholic Church, and I found the long hard road back.. **I didn't want to come crawling back**... but I had no choice...{It was that very knowledge of Scripture O.T. and N.T. that led me back}, I knew The Catholic Church is the Church Jesus Christ stablished til His return... walked back through those doors with my head down, and tail between my legs. and started all over again!
Just saw your post #188, thank you!

So when we rebuke anyone, we are not allowed to bless them? That’s a new one!

Personally, I think it is awesome to get/hear those words.
How about,
God Love You (It worked for Bishop Fulton Sheen)

Soory apryl,
trying not to beat the horse, but didn’t get this in on time my last post:

This is what you stated:
Apryl;7009733] Who said that Catholics don’t tithe? No, the Church doesn’t ASK for us to do so in those terms, but we are asked to contribute. Scripture, which we know is open to interpretation… but the definitive interpretationis reserved for the Church.
Still, tithing is giving the first 10% of what you have The FIRST of what you have. Not the left overs
Acts is the beginnings of the Church, and the Epistles are letters to the Church, that’s why I brought them up.

God love you,
John

Well, the problem is not the Eucharistic Ministers blessing any one.

Since in the Catholic Church, the ONLY EUCHARISTIC Minister is a priest. 👍

Lay people are EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF THE HOLY COMMUNION.

I don’t know what happened that people started calling the EMs Eucharistic Ministers since I don’t recall when they became common, but in other churches, Lay People can be Eucharistic Ministers… in the ROMAN Catholic Church, they are only the priests. 😛

Correct, like anything else the term crept in… Yes the Church is frowning on the term Eucharistic Minister… and rightly Correcting the title back to Extradinary Minister… Pope Benedict is also moving away from the Lay people from cleaning the Sacred Vessels after Mass, in my diocese only Priests and Deacons are allowed.

A little lesson from Galatians for all:

Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if [fn] anyone is caught in any trespass, **you who are spiritual, **restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.

Gal 6:2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

Gal 6:3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself

Not everybody is spiritual… but everybody has an opinion.

God bless,
John

Yeah, wow, they have a lot of nerve, trying to “bless” your kids! Everyone knows that only priests and above can bless. All those lay people trying to bless people. Shoot, they are only children of God - what right do they have to bless other people? It’s such an insult! Christians blessing Christians - what is the world coming to?

I LOVE holding hands during the Our Father! It gives me such a feeling of belonging. I also love the folk music and I would sing Kumbaya if they let me. Again, it seems to foster a feeling of belonging. The people who go to the one “folk Mass” we have on Saturday evening seem to be the ones who appreciate that kind of music and it shows. It’s so beautiful!!

I absolutely love the Agnus Dei sung half in Latin, half in English. The beauty of the whole church singing that prayer brings tears to my eyes every single time. I find myself singing it when I’m not at Mass.

Communion in the hand is easier for me for physical reasons but I really see no difference between taking it on the tongue or by hand. It’s still the Body and Blood of the Christ and my hands and mouth are both parts of me.

Excuse me? Here is how I act in Church:

Here is how I am in your typical cafe:

Need I say more?
Yes, please say more. I am very confused now. I have no idea what you are talking about. I apologize for my ignorance.

What if Jesus held His hands out to you? Would you hold His hands? Would you run to be held by Him?
That has nothing to do with the Koom Bye Yah practice of holding hands during the sacred vertical prayer of Pater Noster.

My reference was to the other poster’s note of not holding hands with dudes. Jesus was a dude, wasn’t He? I do believe He was. Ergo, if someone will not hold hands with dudes, one won’t hold hands with Jesus.

'K?

God love you!! (thanks, John!)

I know…I know. What is even more shocking is when parents tell me:

Well God will forgive me for not going this week…
And God certainly will…if they make a proper Confession. But if they die between the time they miss Mass and that Confession…:eek:

That really scares me.

  1. I would just like to say that I COMPLETELY agree that Catholics should always wear proper attire for church, especially on Sundays. Tank tops, hats, short shorts, sports jerseys, bikini tops, and sleeveless shirts should never be acceptable in church. Jesus said that he would throw a guest not properly attired for the wedding feast out among the unprepared, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Also, poorly dressed people tend to distract, because hey, we’re all human, and less coverage is more tempting. It takes the mind off God. Better dress is also a sign of respect. Who deserves more respect than God?
  2. I don’t agree with holding hands during the Our Father. It causes so many problems of people wanting to or not wanting to hold hands, and so parts of the prayer are missed as people try to figure this out. I’ve had some people become perceptibly distraught that I won’t hold their hand. They’ve glared at me. That’s ridiculous, and so if the occassion for such annoyance is abolished, then that’s one less problem. Also, my dad says that by holding hands, people focus more on the horizontal (their neighbors) than on the vertical (the sending of the prayer to God).
  3. Modern music drives me up the wall!!! I’d rather have a completely silent Mass, where the psalms are just read, than have those hip-swaying, wanna be rock stars (no offense intended to any legitimate cantors out there) that almost desecrate the holy sacrifice of the Mass with such confusing/uninspiring songs, such as “I am the Bread of Life,” “Raise you up on Eagle Wings,” “This Little Light of Mine,” “Make of my Hand a Throne,” “God has Chosen Me,” “Our God is an Awesome God,” and “I will be Strength for the Journey.” (Sorry if the capitalization is not completely correct. I only have a few minutes to get this typed before my break is over 🙂 )

I agree but some here will say some people simply can only afford shorts, sandals, etc. And I wonder those supporting the belief some cannot afford decent clothes,if they would dress with shorts and sandals,if invited to meet the Pres. of the U.S.? I do not understand the attutude by so many about having to dress decent for Mass? That is the problem today with people, cannot tell them anything without them getting all offended. For crying out loud it is MASS…not a beach party.

Yes when one does not hold the hand of another, people tend to give ugly looks. Sometimes it may give the impression the person is racist or a germ freak? I agree with your dad about the Our Father. What I do not like is when the Our Father is sung.

I also do not care much for contemporary music either. Becomes more of a concert than a Mass.

I went to a latin rite bible course on evolution verses creation and at the end they sang the Gloria and a few other hymns in Latin, and wow, it is heartwarming to hear them sung in the Latin, i listened in awe.

As far as christians blessing other Christian children, even dentists bank clerks give the kids a little something when they show up with their parents… and that’s how I was made to as the child moves forward with their parent give 'em a little something to smile about and maybe even look forward too, rather than them walking away felling left out.

God bless,
John
