What I don't like about Catholics...as a Catholic.

I agree but some here will say some people simply can only afford shorts,sandals,etc.And I wonder those supporting the belief some cannot afford decent clothes,if they would dress with shorts and sandals,if invited to meet the Pres. of the U.S.? I do not understand the attutude by so many about having to dress decent for Mass? That is the problem today with people,cannot tell them anything without them getting all offended. For crying out loud it is MASS…not a beach party.

Just like to clarify, I’m against people putting other people under a microscope… kind of a micro managing attitude, that I have seen. I am against alienating people during the Mass, if someone is distracting you, That is your problem, take it to the Priest/ deacon for discussion… fashion faux police @ Mass? Wait at the door and rebuke them before they come in… see where that gets you.
Better yet, get a bucket or pail… outside the Church and remind us all we not worthy of God’s Sanctification or Salvation! We all going down…

had a neighbor like that, as me and a two riends would walk by occasionally this old coot, would stand up point jis finger at us and tell yell-out, "You boys are going down’ for awhile there I actually believed I was going down… yep, mid thirties I still thought I wasn’t worth saving because of that old dude!

I have to dress proper, But hopefully people will catch on by my example rather than policing them @ the Mass. There is a time and place for correction…NOT IN or During the Mass.

Of course Jesus was not “merely ‘a dude’”. Jesus was God Incarnate. But “dude” means “man” in English and Jesus was a man. One hundred percent man and one hundred percent God. I don’t believe the two could be teased apart. And by saying He was not “merely ‘a dude’” you are admitting that He was a dude.

Jesus was a man. If He were standing next to you in church would you hold his hand? Or would you feel icky and squeamish because you’re a guy?

I’m just saddened that people can’t understand one simple concept: How you act in a religious place/position does not necessarily the same as how you would act in a mall, but how
you act in a mall can still be just as good (sometimes even better). The same thing can go for anything outside church.

You see one poster here made a jab about people not helping around in a parish but could spend plenty time in malls. Guess what pal? What if “hanging in malls” is where that person is more helpful? Sinner or not, a person who “helps around in church” is subject to many standards and stereotypes.

First of all, I never once said I I correct people before or after Mass, I have been working for the CC long enough to know you are correct. Second of all, every parish community differs and has different set of issues and have to be handled differently.Third, issues have to be addressed whether verbally or via letter (pulpit,pastor’s corner,deacon,bullentin,letters to parents in catechism,etc) and is not necessarily being under the microscope or micro-management. Problem today is many people simply do not like to be corrected in any fashion or form or at any time. They have horrible attitudes and then we wonder why the world is so messed up?

Nonetheless, I completely understand your position and any valuable information is of great appreciation.

Ah, I think I understand now. I was going to respond earlier about that “mall” statement but I wanted to wait until you had your say. The statement made me think of a saint (and I can’t remember who it is - St. Teresa of Avila?) who was ill and spent a lot of time in her room at the convent praying. The other sisters complained that she wasn’t doing her share of the work; in fact, she wasn’t working at all. And she said “I AM WORKING!! I’M PRAYING!!!” (I may have this all mixed up and if so I apologize).

Anyway, your point is well taken. I don’t spend any time at malls but I don’t help out at church, either. And I’m not going to say I’m a saint walking around on earth because I surely am not. But I do pray and I do contemplate and I wonder if the people at my church think I’m lazy because I don’t work and have all this free time yet I don’t help out at church.

Well, I am helping out - not at church specifically, but by other actions. And people can help at malls and anywhere else they happen to be. And people can be lackadaisical about going to Mass whereas they may be saintly in other places.

It saddens me, too.

Unfortunately I’m a number 4 as well Ora and I even wear shorts and a tank top (which covers me up sufficiently) to do my Adoration hours as well.

I do have to agree though some of those things do bother me. I actually saw someone clipping coupons in church one time, during the Homily. I have to admit it makes me crazy when I see people heading for the door with a Eucharist in their mouth. Thankfully though, my Pastor has addressed that.

Exactly! I mean here’s another example. I’m trying to be a writer and I spend a lot of times trying to make my stories work. I study for my English major. I research stuff like myths, folklore, or other stories that would give me ideas. I reflect on my planned theme (religion, philosophy, and life experiences help a lot here).

Now enter people like the one responded to who think I oughta be helping in church more often than I stay cooped up at home, always in front of a computer, or behind a book.

Well excuse me sir/madam but what exactly do you want a guy like me to help around in? Polishing pews? Washing chalices? So much for trying to refine the talent God gives ya…

Kumbaya is a proper name. You have used character substitutions in this proper name. That is against a forum rule.

I don’t need to provide corroborating evidence from the Church. (I suppose that is what “CC” is referring to - is it too much trouble for you to type “Church” or “Catholic Church”? Sheesh!!) CAF has its own rules which we all agree to follow when we become members.

It is also against the rules (although not printed anywhere that I can find) that we must be charitable. If this is not a forum rule I would not have received an infraction for being uncharitable. Mocking the term Kumbaya is mocking a song whose ancestry is unclear although many think it was first sung by Africans in Angola or African-Americans in the Sea Islands and/or the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia 70 to 80 years ago. The word “Kumbaya” means “Come By Me.” The words “Kumbaya, Lord” translate to “Come by me, Lord”; ergo, you are mocking a prayer. A prayer can certainly be sung.
